Aquascape & setup

Warm, soft to moderately soft water on the gentle side of neutral, in keeping with its lowland-river home. Keep it clean and steady — corys are sensitive to accumulated nitrate and to sudden swings.

Soft, fine sand is non-negotiable: corys feed by sifting substrate through their gills, and sharp or coarse gravel wears their barbels down to stubs. Driftwood, roots, leaf litter and some shade complete a river-margin look, with plenty of open sandy floor to work over.

Community & care

Corydoras are shoaling fish — keep six or more of the same species; a lone or paired cory is a stressed one. They are utterly peaceful bottom-dwellers and belong only with calm, similarly-sized community fish — small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and the like — never with anything large or boisterous enough to bully a slow-moving fish working the floor.

Corydoras vittatus is a small, banded armoured catfish from the coastal rivers of northeastern Brazil — a region that lies well outside the great Amazon and Paraná basins where most corys are found, which makes it something of a geographic outlier. Named for the dark band that crosses its head and masks the eyes, it spent much of its history shuffled around as a subspecies or look-alike of other species before being recognised as valid in its own right. Unlike many cory cats reshuffled in the 2024 revision of the subfamily, it remains, for now, in Corydoras in the strict sense.

Taxonomy & naming

Corydoras vittatus was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Han Nijssen in 1971, on the basis of material from the Rio Itapicuru drainage in Maranhão, northeastern Brazil — still the type locality. The specific name vittatus, Latin for 'banded' or 'adorned with a band', refers to the dark bar that runs across the head from gill cover to gill cover and encloses the eye like a mask.

The species has a tangled nomenclatural history. For a long stretch it was treated as a junior name or a form close to the better-known C. blochi and its relatives, and it was only firmly recognised as a valid species in its own right decades after the original description. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists Corydoras vittatus Nijssen, 1971 as a valid species. When Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published their 2024 revision splitting the old, oversized Corydoras into several lineage genera, vittatus was not moved into one of the new genera and is retained in Corydoras in the strict sense, which is the combination FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes currently carry. Because the revision is recent and its sampling did not cover every species, that placement should be read as provisional rather than final.

Morphology

This is a small, short-bodied cory. FishBase gives a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length for the type material, though aquarium-grown fish are reported larger, on the order of 2.5–3 in total length, with females growing somewhat bigger and deeper-bodied than males. Like all members of the subfamily it is armoured rather than scaled: two rows of overlapping bony plates run down each flank and meet along the back, the head is a hard, blunt helmet, and three pairs of short barbels fringe the downturned mouth.

The defining feature is the head band that gives the fish its name — a dark mask that crosses from one gill cover to the other and takes in the eyes, a camouflage pattern shared by several 'masked' corys. The body is otherwise pale to greyish with a faint sheen and, in many individuals, a darker longitudinal marking along the midline. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each carry a stiff leading spine, the usual cory defence that can jab a careless hand and snag in a net.

Habitat

Corydoras vittatus is endemic to the Rio Itapicuru basin and neighbouring coastal drainages of northeastern Brazil — a notable distribution, because these short rivers draining directly to the Atlantic are isolated from the vast Amazon and Paraná–Paraguay systems that hold the bulk of the genus. That isolation is part of what makes the species, and the handful of corys sharing these basins, biogeographically interesting.

Within that range it is a fish of shallow, quieter water — stream margins and slow reaches over sand and mud, with leaf litter and submerged wood. Reported tolerances are typical of a lowland tropical cory: temperatures around 72–79 °F, a broad pH band from acidic to slightly alkaline (roughly 6.0–8.0) and soft to moderately hard water. Like its relatives it is a facultative air-breather, gulping air at the surface and absorbing oxygen through a vascularised hindgut, which lets it cope with the warm, oxygen-poor conditions of shrinking dry-season pools.

Feeding

Like other Corydoras, C. vittatus is a benthic omnivore and detritivore. It works the bottom more or less continuously, burying its snout and barbels in sand to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and the organic film of detritus, then expelling cleaned sand through the gills. It is an opportunist rather than a specialist; in the aquarium it readily takes sinking pellets and wafers, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and whatever its tankmates let fall, but should not be left to scavenge leftovers alone.

Mating

No detailed account of courtship in C. vittatus specifically appears in the literature, but it is expected to follow the well-documented Corydoras pattern. These are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. When a female is ready she cleans a spawning site and the group becomes active; a male takes up the classic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, and a small number of eggs are fertilised and clasped in a basket formed by her pelvic fins, then pressed onto the cleaned surface. The sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time, until the clutch is complete.

Breeding

There is no widely published captive breeding report for Corydoras vittatus, and it is far less common in the trade than the staple corys, so much of what can be said is by analogy with close relatives. Spawning in the genus is typically triggered by a cool, large water change that mimics the onset of the rainy season; the adhesive eggs are laid in small batches on firm surfaces and receive no parental care — adults will eat them, so breeders move the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in a few days and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods once the yolk is absorbed. Anyone working with this species should expect to confirm these details first-hand rather than rely on the genus generalisation.

In the aquarium

Corydoras vittatus is an uncommon import rather than a beginner's staple, but its care follows the standard cory template. It is a shoaling species and should be kept in groups of six or more; kept singly or in pairs it is visibly stressed. A group is comfortable in a tank of around 23.5 in or more, where bottom area matters more than height.

Substrate is the single most important detail: provide soft sand or very smooth, rounded fine gravel, because corys feed by sifting and sharp or coarse gravel erodes and infects their barbels, leaving the blunted faces that mark poor husbandry. Keep the bottom clean, the water warm (about 72–79 °F), well-filtered and well-oxygenated with a gentle current, and offer the broad pH and hardness range the species tolerates. It is peaceful and suits a calm community of tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids and similar fish. Two standard cautions apply: the fin spines catch in nets, so a cup is safer, and a badly stressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in the confined volume of a bag or bucket, can kill the whole group — so transport them with care.

Conservation

FishBase reports Corydoras vittatus as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. That said, a narrow endemic confined to a few short coastal rivers in northeastern Brazil is inherently more exposed to localised pressures — water abstraction, deforestation, agriculture and pollution — than a continent-spanning species like the bronze cory. Its restricted range means that habitat degradation in the Itapicuru and neighbouring basins could affect a large share of the global population, so its apparently secure status is worth keeping under review rather than taking for granted.
