Taxonomy & naming
Aspidoras kiriri was described in 2017 by Luís Miguel Aguiar Oliveira, Angela Maria Zanata, Luiz Fernando Caserta Tencatt and Marcelo Ribeiro de Britto, in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology, from a small coastal drainage in northeastern Brazil. The holotype, MNRJ 47400, is a 1 in SL specimen from Bahia.
The species sits in the genus Aspidoras R. von Ihering, 1907, one of the corydoradine armoured catfishes of family Callichthyidae. Aspidoras is diagnosed chiefly by the structure of the skull roof, in which the fontanel is divided into two parts by the frontal bones, giving the genus its characteristic 'twin-windowed' cranium — a feature separating it from Corydoras and the related corydoradine lineages. When Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published their large 2024 phylogenomic revision of the Corydoradinae (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, zlae053) — the study that split the old, overgrown Corydoras into several genera including Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus and Osteogaster — Aspidoras was confirmed intact as a natural genus, and A. kiriri is listed among its valid species. So unlike many former 'Corydoras', this fish keeps its name unchanged: Aspidoras kiriri in both the hobby and the current Catalog of Fishes lineage. The specific epithet honours the Kiriri Indigenous people of the region.
Morphology
This is a very small catfish, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length. Like all corydoradines it wears bony armour rather than scales: two rows of overlapping plates (scutes) run along each flank, and the head is a hard, blunt casque. Three pairs of barbels fringe the small, downturned mouth.
The colour pattern is the easiest field mark. The body is pale with a series of dark dorsolateral blotches, and — distinctively — the dorsal half of the head, the opercle, the cleithrum and the dorsal part of the body carry conspicuously golden areas, brightest in the gaps between the black blotches. Sexual differences show in the genitalia: males possess a lanceolate genital papilla, as in other corydoradines, while females lack any papilla or projection. As with the rest of the genus, the dorsal and pectoral fins are each armed with a stiff leading spine.
Habitat
Aspidoras kiriri has one of the smallest known ranges of any cory: it is recorded only from two headwater tributaries of the rio da Dona, a small coastal river draining to the Atlantic in eastern Bahia. The fish lives in clear streams crossing remnant Atlantic Forest at roughly 244 to 303 metres above sea level.
In these streams it keeps to rocky beds dressed with sand and organic debris, favouring the small and large pools that form below stretches of rapids. The water is warm and tropical. Like other callichthyids it is a facultative air-breather, able to gulp atmospheric air and absorb oxygen through its hindgut, which buffers it against the low-oxygen conditions of warm, still forest pools — though precise temperature and chemistry data for the type localities have not been published.
Feeding
No dedicated diet study exists for A. kiriri, but its anatomy and behaviour place it squarely with the other small Aspidoras as a benthic micro-omnivore and detritivore. It works the sandy, debris-strewn pool floors with its barbels and snout, sifting the substrate for small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and the organic film of detritus. Such fish are part of the inconspicuous substrate-cleaning fauna of forest headwaters, processing fallen organic matter and small benthic animals.
Mating
Reproduction in A. kiriri has not been documented in the wild, but Aspidoras share the corydoradine breeding pattern. They are egg-laying shoalers without a pair bond; a receptive female cleans a spawning surface and a male takes up the characteristic 'T-position', pressed at right angles against her head, while she clasps a few eggs in a basket formed by her pelvic fins and presses them onto the cleaned surface. The presence of a lanceolate genital papilla in males and its absence in females is the clearest sexual signal so far recorded for this species.
Breeding
There is no published account of captive or wild breeding for Aspidoras kiriri, and the species is not established in the aquarium trade. By analogy with better-known Aspidoras such as A. lakoi, it is expected to be an egg-scatterer that deposits small clutches of adhesive eggs among vegetation, fine roots or the substrate, with no parental care — adults of the genus do not guard the eggs. Spawning in related species is typically prompted by the cooler, fresher water of the rainy season. Any specific clutch sizes, incubation times or fry data for A. kiriri remain unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Aspidoras kiriri is essentially unknown in the hobby; it is a recently described, narrow-range endemic rather than a traded fish, and almost everything below is inferred from its close relatives. If kept, it would need what other small Aspidoras need: a shoal of six or more, since these are social fish that fret in isolation; a soft sand substrate to protect the delicate barbels from abrasion and infection; and clean, warm, well-oxygenated water with gentle flow. Given its origin in shaded forest pools it would suit a quiet, dimly lit tank with leaf litter, fine wood and smooth stones, and only the most peaceful of tankmates. Because its entire wild population is tiny and localised, it is far better regarded as a fish to protect in situ than one to collect.
Conservation
Aspidoras kiriri has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN and carries no Red List category. That silence is itself a concern: the species is known only from two small headwater streams in a single coastal drainage, set in the Atlantic Forest — among the most fragmented and heavily cleared biomes on Earth. A range this small leaves no margin against deforestation, agriculture, water abstraction or pollution, any one of which could remove a large fraction of the global population at a stroke. As a microendemic of degraded forest headwaters it should be treated as inherently vulnerable until a proper assessment is made, and the integrity of the rio da Dona headwaters is the single most important factor in its survival.
