Taxonomy & naming
Geophagus itapicuruensis was described by the American ichthyologist John Diederich Haseman in 1911, in his 'Annotated catalog of the cichlid fishes collected by the expedition of the Carnegie Museum to central South America' (Annals of the Carnegie Museum v. 7), from the Rio Itapicuru at Queimadas, Bahia. The species name is taken from the river and treated as an adjectival toponym ('of the Itapicuru'). For much of the 20th century the name was suppressed as a synonym or subspecies — Geophagus brasiliensis itapicuruensis — of the widespread pearl cichlid, on the assumption that the eastern-Brazilian eartheaters were all one variable species. Modern revisionary work on the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis species complex has reversed that, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now lists it as valid as Geophagus itapicuruensis Haseman 1911, distributed in the Itapicuru River drainage of Bahia; FishBase and the Catalogue of Life follow. As with the rest of the brasiliensis group, the generic assignment is provisional — the group is widely expected to be split from Geophagus sensu stricto and is often written 'Geophagus' in quotation marks — but the binomial Geophagus itapicuruensis is the current valid name. Molecular work (Mattos & Costa 2018) recovers itapicuruensis within a clade spanning the Rio de Contas, Rio Itapicuru and Rio Mariana basins, alongside two of the newer described species.
Morphology
Geophagus itapicuruensis is a typical brasiliensis-group eartheater: a moderately deep, laterally compressed cichlid with a fairly steep frontal profile and the small, low, protrusible mouth of a dedicated substrate-sifter, marked with the genus-typical dark mid-lateral blotch. FishBase does not publish a reliable maximum length for the species, but brasiliensis-group members of comparable rivers reach roughly 6–8 in, and itapicuruensis is a medium-sized eartheater rather than a dwarf. Colouration is the characteristic brasiliensis-group dress: an olive-to-grey or brassy ground overlain with rows of iridescent pale blue-green spots, dots and short streaks on the flanks, cheeks, operculum and unpaired fins, intensifying in dominant and breeding fish. Haseman's original description and subsequent revisionary comparisons separate it from the pearl cichlid and its other relatives on meristic counts and details of the spot pattern rather than on any single dramatic external feature. Sexual dimorphism in the group is moderate: males grow larger and may develop a fuller forehead and slightly extended fin tips, with the sexes hardest to tell apart outside breeding condition.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Rio Itapicuru drainage of Bahia, north-eastern Brazil, with its type locality at Queimadas in the interior of the state. The Itapicuru is one of the medium coastal rivers of the semiarid Brazilian northeast, rising in the interior and running east to the Atlantic; much of its basin lies in the caatinga and transitional dry-forest zone, where rivers are strongly seasonal — flowing in the wet season and contracting to pools and reduced channels in the long dry season. The species is a benthopelagic freshwater fish of these warm tropical waters, working the sand, mud and gravel bottoms of the river and its tributaries. No specific published temperature or water-chemistry envelope exists for itapicuruensis, but the Itapicuru regime is warm, often turbid in the rains and clearer in low water, and ranges from soft to moderately hard depending on the underlying geology of the semiarid catchment. Its restriction to this single drainage is part of the broader pattern of basin-by-basin endemism that the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis complex shows along the eastern Brazilian coast.
Feeding
Geophagus itapicuruensis feeds as its genus name promises — it is a substrate-sifter. The fish takes mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment from the river bed, sorts edible invertebrates, detritus and organic particles from the inorganic grit over its gill rakers, and expels the cleaned substrate through mouth and gills. The brasiliensis-group eartheaters are highly abundant sand-sifting fishes whose diet is dominated by benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms — together with seeds, plant fragments and a substantial fraction of detritus, making them invertivore-detritivores low on the food web. The protrusible, down-turned mouth and well-developed gill rakers are the apparatus of this winnowing habit. There is no diet study specific to itapicuruensis, but its membership in the group and its morphology leave no reason to expect a departure from the sand-sifting norm.
Mating
Members of the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis species group are biparental substrate spawners and guarders — not mouthbrooders, unlike the Amazonian-Guianan true eartheaters or the Andean-Panamanian steindachneri group. The reproductive biology of itapicuruensis specifically has not been observed and is inferred from this well-documented group. A male and female form a pair, clean a spawning surface — a flat stone or firm patch of substrate — and defend a territory around it together, with the usual cichlid courtship of lateral displays, fin-spreading and joint substrate-cleaning. There is no oral incubation; the eggs are laid and tended externally, with both parents sharing in their care and defence. This conventional, robust substrate-spawning strategy, with attentive biparental guarding, is the reproductive signature of the group and a large part of why its best-known member, the pearl cichlid, is so adaptable and prolific.
Breeding
No captive or wild breeding account exists specifically for Geophagus itapicuruensis; what follows is the group pattern, exemplified by the pearl cichlid. The pair lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface and tends them biparentally — the female fanning and directly caring for the eggs, the male defending the perimeter. After hatching, the wrigglers are commonly moved to one or more pre-dug pits, and once free-swimming the fry are herded and guarded as a school by both parents, which defend them tenaciously, sometimes with considerable aggression. Brasiliensis-group cichlids produce sizeable broods — a fecundity advantage over the small-brood mouthbrooding eartheaters — and itapicuruensis, as a medium-sized member, presumably falls in this range, though no clutch counts have been published for it. The group's hardy, conventional substrate-spawning biology, combined with seasonal cues from the wet–dry cycle of its semiarid river, governs its breeding; spawning very likely tracks the onset of the rains, when the Itapicuru fills and feeding conditions improve, as it does in related coastal-basin cichlids.
In the aquarium
Geophagus itapicuruensis is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It has only recently been disentangled from the pearl cichlid, is not exported from its remote Bahian river, and has no established body of aquarist breeding reports; FishBase records no breeding report and effectively no spotter records. The brasiliensis-group eartheater that hobbyists actually keep is the hardy, near-ubiquitous pearl cichlid, and any husbandry for itapicuruensis is extrapolated from it.
That extrapolation is reasonably safe, because the group is among the most undemanding of eartheaters. A keeper would provide a spacious tank with a deep bed of fine, soft sand — these are substrate-sifters, and gravel both frustrates feeding and risks gill abrasion — with scattered stones, driftwood and open foraging space. Reflecting the warm, seasonally variable Itapicuru, water around 75–82 °F of soft to moderate hardness suits it; the group tolerates a wide range, so clean, stable, well-filtered conditions matter more than precise targets, and a fish that constantly stirs the substrate rewards strong mechanical filtration and regular water changes. Feeding is straightforward — sinking pellets and frozen or live invertebrates taken off the bottom match the natural invertivore-detritivore diet. The main caution, as with the whole group, is temperament: brasiliensis-group cichlids can become decidedly territorial and pugnacious when breeding, so a medium eartheater like this wants room and robust, similarly sized tankmates rather than delicate companions.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Geophagus itapicuruensis as Data Deficient (last assessed 7 November 2018) — a recognition that too little is known about its distribution, abundance and trend to judge its status. That label carries real concern for a fish in its situation: a single-drainage endemic of a semiarid, water-stressed river in the Brazilian northeast. The Itapicuru basin is subject to the familiar pressures of the caatinga interior — water abstraction for agriculture and human use, damming and reservoir creation, pollution, deforestation, and the intensifying droughts of a drying regional climate — all of which weigh heavily on fishes restricted to a single seasonal river system. The historical confusion of itapicuruensis with the widespread pearl cichlid also means its true range and population have been under-recorded. A targeted assessment, and basic survey of its distribution and habitat in the Itapicuru, would be the obvious next step. The species has no CITES listing and no commercial or ornamental significance.
