Boraras maculatus, the dwarf rasbora, is one of the tiniest cyprinids in the world — a miniature flash of orange-red and black from the ancient peat-swamp forests of Sundaland and southern Indochina. Reaching barely 1 in in length, it inhabits the soft, dark, tea-coloured blackwater of forest streams and shallow wetlands in Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, eastern Sumatra and Singapore, where the water is warm, acid, almost devoid of minerals, and stained brown by the tannins of accumulated leaf litter and decaying peat. In the aquarium it is one of the most rewarding dwarf rasboras: a micro-schooling fish that shows its best colours only in a species tank or a carefully matched nano community, with dim light, dark substrate and the soft, acidic chemistry that mirrors its vanishing peat-swamp home.

Taxonomy & naming

Boraras maculatus was first described by Georg Duncker in 1904 from specimens collected in the Malay Peninsula. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Boraras maculatus (Duncker, 1904), the parenthetical authority indicating that the species was not originally placed in its current genus.

The genus Boraras was established by Kottelat and Witte in 1999 to receive a group of Southeast Asian dwarf rasboras previously housed in the large, catch-all genus Rasbora. All Boraras are tiny, with truncated body shapes and distinctive spotting patterns; the genus is now recognized as a separate lineage from the broader Rasbora assemblage. B. maculatus carries the specific epithet maculatus, Latin for 'spotted', a reference to the pattern of dark blotches along the flanks that distinguishes it from other members of the genus.

In the older literature this species may appear under various Rasbora combinations, and it should not be confused with its close relatives B. brigittae (the Chili rasbora, more intensely red and with a finer stripe pattern) or B. merah (the micro rasbora, from Borneo), though all four small Boraras species are sometimes sold interchangeably in the trade.

Morphology

Boraras maculatus is a small, laterally compressed cyprinid that reaches a maximum standard length of about 1 in, with most adults measuring 1 in. The body is relatively deep for its size and the mouth is small and terminal, reflecting a diet of microscopic prey items.

Coloration is the defining feature: the ground colour of the flanks is pale orange to orange-red, intensifying in breeding condition and in males. Along the midlateral line runs a series of irregular dark spots or blotches, and the flanks often carry an additional deeper reddish or crimson suffusion. The dorsal, caudal and anal fins may be marked with black and red pigment. Females are typically somewhat larger-bodied and paler than males, the sexual dimorphism becoming most evident when females are gravid, at which point the abdomen is visibly distended.

Habitat

Boraras maculatus is native to the blackwater peat-swamp forests and associated forest streams of Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, eastern Sumatra, Singapore and the Riau Islands. These habitats are among the most chemically extreme freshwater environments on Earth: the water is filtered through ancient peat deposits and shaded by dense canopy, producing conditions that are very soft (typically 5–12 dH, often lower), strongly acidic (pH 4.0–6.5), heavily tannin-stained, oxygen-poor by most standards and very warm.

Natural water temperatures sit between roughly 75–82 °F, though shaded streams may be slightly cooler, and flow is gentle — these are not hill-stream fishes but inhabitants of sluggish, heavily vegetated lowland forest water. Depth is often very shallow, with dense stands of aquatic vegetation and drifts of fallen leaves providing both structure and the biological communities of micro-invertebrates that the fish depend upon for food. The loss of peat-swamp forest across Sundaland to oil palm and paper pulp plantations has drastically reduced the extent of this habitat.

Feeding

Boraras maculatus is a micropredator. In its natural blackwater habitat it picks off small insects and their larvae, zooplankton, tiny crustaceans and worms from the water column and the surface of submerged vegetation and leaf litter. Its small mouth limits it to very fine prey, and it rarely takes anything large enough to be visible to the unaided eye in the wild.

In the aquarium it requires appropriately sized foods. Dry flakes or micro-pellets may be accepted once the fish are settled, but live and frozen alternatives — daphnia, moina, baby brine shrimp nauplii, micro worms, infusoria — produce the best condition and colouration. Feeding frequency should be higher than with larger fishes, as very small cyprinids have rapid metabolisms and do not tolerate prolonged fasting well. Overfeeding should be avoided in the soft, slow-filtered systems these fish require, as organic waste accumulates quickly in low-buffering water.

Mating

Boraras maculatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no pair bond and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning. As with all danios and rasboras, there is no nest, no mouthbrooding, and no guarding of eggs or fry. Males in breeding condition develop more intense orange-red colouration and actively pursue ripe females through dense vegetation.

Courtship consists of a male pressing close to a gravid female, nudging and chasing her through plant thickets or over fine substrate. When spawning occurs the pair press together momentarily, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously. The eggs are small, adhesive or weakly adhesive, and fall among plants, moss or the substrate. Adults show no interest in the eggs after spawning and will consume them given the opportunity.

Breeding

Breeding Boraras maculatus in the aquarium is achievable but requires attention to water chemistry. The species will not spawn reliably in hard, alkaline or even neutral water; the soft, acidic conditions of its native peat swamps must be replicated, with pH ideally in the 5.0–6.5 range, very low hardness (below 12 dH), and temperature around 79 °F. A species tank or a breeding vessel set up with Java moss, fine-leaved plants or dried leaf litter provides the cover that triggers spawning behaviour.

A conditioned pair or small group of adults will begin spawning when conditions are right, often after a modest rise in temperature or the addition of a small quantity of fresh, very soft water to simulate a rain event. Eggs hatch in approximately two days at 79 °F; the tiny larvae initially absorb the yolk sac and then become free-swimming, requiring infusoria or paramecia before they are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Because fry are very small and the adults will eat eggs and larvae, separating the adults after spawning or providing extremely dense cover is necessary to obtain a cohort of young fish. Growth is slow relative to larger cyprinids.

In the aquarium

Boraras maculatus is best suited to a nano or species aquarium rather than a general community tank. Its tiny size and delicate temperament mean it is easily outcompeted for food and may be stressed or harassed by larger or more active fishes. A species tank of 5.5–10 US gal, heavily planted, with a dark substrate of fine sand or aquasoil, driftwood, dried Indian almond or oak leaves, and very gentle filtration through a sponge filter replicates its natural environment and shows the fish at their most confident and colourful.

Water chemistry is non-negotiable: pH 4.0–6.5, hardness below 90 ppm (ideally well below), temperature 75–81 °F, and minimal current. These parameters are critical — fish kept in harder or more alkaline water fade in colour, refuse to spawn, and may suffer long-term health problems. The only suitable tankmates, if any, are other species from identical habitats with similarly undemanding size and temperament: small Boraras species, Trigonostigma naeva or espei, small Sundanese Otocinclus-type algae eaters, or shrimp from acidic habitats. Shoals of at least eight to ten individuals bring out natural schooling behaviour and the striking display of colour competition between males.

Conservation

Boraras maculatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List in an assessment published in 2019 (Ahmad, 2018), citing a broad enough distribution and sufficient remaining populations to preclude a threatened category at the species level. However, this assessment masks significant habitat pressure: the peat-swamp forest ecosystems that this species depends upon across Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Singapore have been devastated by agricultural conversion, logging, drainage for oil palm cultivation and peat fires, with Singapore's peat-swamp forest now essentially eliminated and populations elsewhere severely fragmented.

The species is commonly bred in captivity and widely available in the aquarium trade, meaning collection pressure on remaining wild populations is relatively low. Nevertheless, localised subpopulations in heavily deforested areas may already be extirpated, and any future revision of the species complex — Boraras taxonomy remains incompletely resolved — could reveal cryptic taxa with genuinely restricted and endangered ranges. The ongoing loss of lowland peat-swamp forest across Sundaland is the most serious long-term threat to the ecological community of which this fish is part.
