Taxonomy & naming
Boraras urophthalmoides was described by Maurice Kottelat in 1991, who erected the genus Boraras at the same time to accommodate several miniature rasboras previously placed in Rasbora. The name Boraras is an anagram of Rasbora, acknowledging the kinship while marking morphological separation: Boraras species are among the smallest cyprinids on Earth, distinguished by their minute size, reduced scale counts, and characteristic pigment pattern. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Boraras urophthalmoides (Kottelat, 1991).
Older literature and trade catalogues may list this species under Rasbora urophthalmoides — the combination it carried before Kottelat's revision — and some sources conflate it with closely related Boraras brigittae (mosquito rasbora) or Boraras merah (phoenix rasbora), which share similar colouration. Boraras urophthalmoides is distinguished by its relatively drab ground colour compared with the vivid scarlet of B. brigittae, and by its particular fin-marking pattern. The family placement is Danionidae under modern classifications following the rearrangement of traditional Cyprinidae.
Morphology
Adults of Boraras urophthalmoides reach only about 0.5 in standard length, with a reported maximum of around 1.5 in total length being exceptional; typical aquarium specimens are well under 1 in SL. The body is slender and laterally compressed, with a small terminal mouth suited to capturing tiny invertebrate prey. A prominent dark spot sits at the base of the caudal fin, and a second dark blotch marks the anal-fin base, together creating the dash-and-dot pattern behind the body stripe that inspired the common name.
The lateral stripe runs from behind the eye toward the caudal peduncle, fading before the tail rather than continuing onto the fin rays. The first ray of the dorsal fin is darkened, adding another ink-mark to the fish's appearance. Ground colour is silvery to pale tan with a faint pinkish or yellowish flush; males in condition develop a more saturated tone. The species lacks the intense scarlet flush of Boraras brigittae but compensates with crisp, high-contrast markings that show well even in subdued lighting.
Habitat
Boraras urophthalmoides inhabits slow-moving to nearly still blackwater environments: peat swamps, swamp forests, marshes, and shallow backwaters associated with lowland river systems in Thailand and the wider Indochina region. Its type locality is a swamp near the Sai Buri River in Pattani Province, southern Thailand. Its range extends into the Mae Klong and Chao Phraya basins of central Thailand, and there are records from Vietnam and Cambodia, suggesting a distribution across parts of the lower Mekong system.
The water these fish occupy is characteristically soft, acidic, and heavily tinted with tannins leached from decaying leaf litter and peat — conditions that support little competing fish fauna. Temperature in the lowland swamps ranges from around 68–82 °F, pH from about 6.0 to 7.0, and total hardness is very low (GH typically 18–179 ppm at the softer end). Dense submerged and emergent vegetation provides structure, refuge, and a hunting ground for the fish's tiny invertebrate prey. Open-water areas and strong current are absent from its preferred habitat.
Feeding
Boraras urophthalmoides is a micropredator. In nature it takes small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny worms, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — at or just below the surface and among vegetation. Its small gape dictates prey of appropriately diminutive size; items that are large by the standards of community fishes are simply too big to process.
In the aquarium the species accepts quality micro-pellets and fine dry foods but thrives most visibly on live and frozen fare: baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, Daphnia, Moina, and similar items bring the fish into breeding condition and maintain colour. Feeding small quantities multiple times a day suits its natural foraging pattern better than a single heavy meal, and it ensures that its tiny mouth can process each item fully.
Mating
Boraras urophthalmoides is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no pair bond beyond the spawning act itself, and no parental investment after eggs are released. Courtship consists of a driving male closely pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, with brief lateral contact as eggs and milt are released simultaneously among fine-leaved plants, moss, or over a soft bottom.
Spawning can occur spontaneously in a well-maintained aquarium when the fish are in good condition. Groups that include both sexes will produce eggs with little prompting if water parameters are stable and food quality is high. Males are recognisable by their slimmer profiles; females carrying eggs become visibly rounder in the abdomen. As with nearly all danionids, adults will consume their own eggs if given access.
Breeding
Conditioning pairs or small groups on live and frozen foods is the standard approach to triggering spawning. A separate shallow breeding vessel planted with fine-leaved vegetation — Java moss, Taxiphyllum, or floating plants — provides spawning sites and allows eggs that fall through to settle beyond the adults' reach. Very soft, warm, slightly acidic water (pH around 6.0–6.5, temperature near 79–82 °F) replicates the swamp conditions of the species' home range and encourages spawning activity.
Egg numbers per session are modest, as befits a fish of this size. The adults should be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs, which hatch in two to three days. The larvae are minute and require infusoria or commercial nano fry foods for the first week before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth is slow relative to larger danionids, reflecting the species' tiny adult size. No parental care is given at any stage.
In the aquarium
Boraras urophthalmoides is strictly a nano-aquarium species. Its diminutive size makes it unsuitable for community tanks containing anything larger than similarly scaled fishes — most companions regarded as small (neon tetras, ember tetras, small corydoras) are large enough to intimidate or outcompete it. The ideal companions are other Boraras species, similarly tiny rasboras, pygmy corydoras, and small otocinclus, kept in a well-planted, softwater setup.
The species is sensitive to elevated nitrates and sudden shifts in water chemistry: stable, well-filtered, low-nitrate conditions with regular partial water changes are non-negotiable. A blackwater aesthetic — peat filtration, driftwood, Indian almond leaves — closely mirrors the fish's wild habitat and visibly improves confidence and colouration. It should be kept in groups of at least eight to twelve; small numbers produce timid, pale individuals that hide rather than school. Under appropriate conditions a well-maintained shoal will display freely, occupy all water levels, and spawn without deliberate intervention.
Conservation
Boraras urophthalmoides is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. The primary drivers of concern are habitat loss and degradation: the lowland peat swamps and swamp forests of Southeast Asia have been cleared at a rapid rate for agriculture, palm oil plantations, and human settlement, removing the still, tannin-rich habitat on which this species depends. Agricultural runoff and water-quality pollution further degrade remaining sites.
Collection for the aquarium trade contributes an additional pressure, though captive breeding has reduced (but not eliminated) demand for wild-caught specimens. The species' restricted preference for undisturbed blackwater environments means it cannot easily exploit degraded or disturbed water bodies, making it more vulnerable than widespread generalists to the ongoing transformation of the Indochina lowlands. Monitoring of wild populations and protection of remaining peat-swamp habitat across Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam are the most meaningful conservation levers available.
