Danio quagga is a slender, stripe-patterned cyprinid described in 2009 from the Chindwin River drainage of western Myanmar — one of a clutch of new danio species documented when systematic ichthyological survey intensified across the Indo-Burmese region. It is distinguished from closely related species such as Danio kyathit by its four to five continuous dark horizontal stripes rather than the rows of spots that mark that species, and by proportionally shorter barbels. Relatively little-known in the aquarium hobby, it shares the restless, shoaling temperament and egg-scattering breeding strategy typical of the genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Danio quagga was described formally in 2009 by Sven O. Kullander, Tan Heng Liao and Fang Fang, with the type locality given as the Chindwin River drainage in the Kalaymyo/Tamu area of western Myanmar. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Danio quagga Kullander, Liao & Fang, 2009.

The species belongs to what has become an expanding genus. Danio in the modern sense encompasses the true danios — small, active, horizontally patterned schooling cyprinids of South and Southeast Asia — along with species once placed in Brachydanio (the short-bodied danios, including the ubiquitous zebra danio, D. rerio). The boundaries of Danio relative to Devario (the giant danios and their kin) have been debated and continue to be refined as molecular and morphological work proceeds.

The epithet quagga alludes to the striped pattern: the quagga was a partially striped South African equid now extinct, and the name was applied here by analogy to the four to five dark longitudinal stripes along the fish's flanks. The original description explicitly contrasts the stripe pattern of D. quagga with the spot rows of the closely related Danio kyathit — a key diagnostic character in a group where stripe-versus-spot patterns carry taxonomic weight.

Morphology

Danio quagga is a small, slender cyprinid reaching approximately 2 in total length. The body is elongate and laterally compressed in the typical danio fashion, with a slightly upturned mouth equipped with two pairs of short barbels — proportionally shorter than those of the related Danio kyathit, which is one of the characters used to distinguish the two species in the original description.

The most striking feature is the pattern of four to five continuous dark horizontal stripes running along the flanks from behind the gill cover to the caudal fin. These stripes are unbroken lines, not the rows of discrete spots or blotches seen in D. kyathit, and this difference is the principal character separating the species at a glance. The ground colour between the stripes is pale silvery to yellowish. Specific data on sexual dimorphism in D. quagga are sparse in available literature, but as in related species females are likely deeper-bodied and fuller-bellied when gravid, while males are more slender.

Habitat

Danio quagga is known from the Chindwin River drainage in western Myanmar, with records from the Kalaymyo and Tamu areas. The Chindwin is the largest tributary of the Irrawaddy, draining a broad valley running roughly north–south through Sagaing Region. Its streams and rivers flow over sandy and pebbly substrates through terrain that transitions from foothill forest to agricultural plains.

FishBase records it as a benthopelagic freshwater species, swimming from near the surface to deeper water. Habitat parameters from FishBase place it in slightly acidic to neutral, tropical fresh water — pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 68–79 °F — over sandy and pebble substrates. These conditions are consistent with the moderately soft, seasonal highland and foothill streams feeding the Chindwin, which experience monsoon-driven fluctuations in water level, flow and chemistry. The species is tropical in its affinities but distributed far enough north and inland to experience cooler dry-season temperatures.

Feeding

Like the great majority of danios, Danio quagga is primarily insectivorous in the wild. Aquarium-keeping accounts record it feeding on small aquatic animals, worms and insect larvae — the kind of zooplankton and macroinvertebrate prey that shoaling danios intercept from the water column and surface in their natural stream habitats.

In captivity it is omnivorous and adaptable, accepting good quality flake and micro-pellet foods readily, with live and frozen items such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp providing enrichment and maintaining colour and condition. Its active, fast-moving foraging style is typical of the genus: it moves quickly through the water column and can outcompete slower species at feeding time, so care should be taken that more retiring tankmates receive adequate food.

Mating

Danio quagga is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the standard reproductive mode across the true danios. There is no nest, no pair bond beyond the spawning act, and no parental care of any kind. Spawning is typically triggered by environmental cues such as a rise in water temperature, the addition of fresh soft water, or the onset of the natural monsoon cycle that flooding triggers across much of Myanmar.

In courtship a ready male pursues a gravid female actively through vegetation or over the substrate, pressing close as both fish release eggs and milt simultaneously. The adhesive eggs settle among fine-leaved plants, moss or into gaps between pebbles and gravel on the bottom. Adults will consume eggs given the opportunity, which is why separation of breeders from the spawning vessel is standard practice when intentional breeding is attempted.

Breeding

Breeding Danio quagga follows the same pattern used for other small striped danios. A separate spawning vessel with fine-leaved plants, java moss or a spawning grid is set up in slightly soft, slightly acidic water at around 73–75 °F. Conditioned adults are introduced — ideally with at least equal numbers of males and females — and spawning typically takes place in the early morning.

Because the adults show no parental care and will readily eat the eggs, they are removed promptly after spawning. The small adhesive eggs hatch in approximately two to three days at the breeding temperature. Larvae become free-swimming a few days after hatching and initially require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is moderately rapid, as is typical in the genus.

In the aquarium

Danio quagga is an active, shoaling species that should be kept in groups of at least five to six individuals, with a group of around ten being recommended by hobbyists familiar with the species. Larger groups allow the fish to express natural shoaling behaviour and direct intragroup chasing within the school, reducing stress and any tendency to nip at tankmates. A tank of 30 US gal or more with adequate horizontal swimming length is appropriate for a proper group.

Water conditions matching the fish's Chindwin origins — slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5–7.5), temperature 68–79 °F — suit it well. Good filtration and oxygenation are important, as stream-dwelling danios are accustomed to well-oxygenated water. Fine-leaved planting, open swimming areas and a dark substrate will show the stripe pattern to best advantage. It is compatible with other peaceful, active community species of similar size.

Conservation

Danio quagga has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is currently Not Evaluated. Its known range is restricted to the Chindwin River drainage of western Myanmar — a relatively limited distribution that makes it potentially vulnerable to habitat change, although no targeted conservation assessment has been published.

The Chindwin catchment faces pressures common to much of Myanmar's freshwater network: agricultural encroachment, deforestation in the upper catchment, sedimentation of streams, and the general degradation associated with expanding rural land use. As a small-ranged species described only in 2009, its actual distribution within the Chindwin system, abundance and population trends remain poorly documented. Further survey work across the drainage would be needed to determine whether the species warrants formal threat-category assessment.
