Devario deruptotalea is a small hill-stream danionin described in 2014 from the Dutah Stream, a tributary of the Yu River in the Chindwin drainage of Manipur, north-eastern India. Its name references the broken or interrupted lateral bars that set it apart from close relatives, and it remains known only from its narrow type locality — a clear, shallow, fast-running stream over cobbles and sand rich with algal growth. The species has not been formally assessed by the IUCN, and its restricted range and limited documentation make it one of many recently-described Indian Devario whose conservation standing remains poorly understood.

Taxonomy & naming

Devario deruptotalea was described by Ramananda and Vishwanath in 2014, with the type locality recorded as the Dutah Stream, a tributary of the Yu River within the Chindwin River drainage, Manipur, India. The original description was published in Zootaxa and established the species directly in the genus Devario — it was never formally placed in Danio before being moved, as the genus Devario was already in regular use for Indian and Burmese taxa by the time of the species' description.

The genus Devario is well established in modern ichthyology, its validity underpinned by Fang's (2003) phylogenetic work on Asian cyprinids of the broadly defined Danio group, which resolved Devario as a clade distinct from the true Danio of Hamilton (1822). Devario encompasses the larger, often more robust danionins of the Indian subcontinent and mainland Southeast Asia, including the common giant danio D. devario and the widespread D. malabaricus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name; we follow its current placement of this species in Devario.

The specific epithet deruptotalea is a compound from the Latin deruptus (broken, interrupted) and talea (bar or stripe), referring to the broken lateral color bars that are diagnostic for the species in the original description.

Morphology

Devario deruptotalea is a small species, with the maximum recorded standard length from FishBase at 2.5 in SL for males or unsexed specimens. Like other members of the genus it has a relatively slender, laterally compressed body with the upturned or subterminal mouth characteristic of surface- and mid-water feeding danionins.

The species is distinguished from close relatives by its broken or interrupted lateral color bars — the feature referenced directly in its name. Detailed morphological characters are given in the primary description (Ramananda and Vishwanath 2014), which provides meristics and osteological comparisons against sympatric or regionally distributed Devario species. Because no aquarium literature documents living color in captivity, the description of patterning in life must be taken from the type series. Sexual dimorphism has not been characterized in the literature for this species, though females of Devario congeners are typically deeper-bodied and more distended when gravid.

Habitat

At its type locality — the Dutah Stream, Manipur — Devario deruptotalea inhabits clear, shallow, fast-running water ranging from approximately 0.05 to 1.5 metres in depth, over a bottom of cobbles, sand and meager mud with rich algal growth. This is the classic hill-stream Devario environment: well-oxygenated, fast-moving, and relatively clear compared with the lowland rivers and floodplain beels preferred by more tolerant species such as Danio rerio.

The Dutah Stream feeds the Yu River, itself part of the broader Chindwin drainage — a major tributary of the Irrawaddy system that runs through Myanmar before entering the Irrawaddy proper. Manipur in north-eastern India lies at the watershed between the Indian subcontinent and mainland Southeast Asia, and its streams carry a fish fauna with affinities to both regions. No specific water chemistry measurements have been published for this species' habitat, but the habitat description is consistent with soft to moderately hard, near-neutral and highly oxygenated water typical of fast hill streams in the region.

Feeding

No specific feeding studies have been published for Devario deruptotalea. By analogy with well-studied congeners such as D. devario and D. malabaricus, it is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore and micropredator, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, algal material, and organic detritus in the water column and at the surface.

The benthopelagic categorization in FishBase suggests the species occupies both the lower water column and mid-water, consistent with foraging over the cobbled substrate of its fast-flowing habitat. In an aquarium context, Devario species generally accept a wide range of foods without difficulty, including prepared flakes, small pellets, and live or frozen invertebrates such as daphnia and bloodworm, which support condition and natural foraging behavior.

Mating

Reproductive behavior has not been directly described for Devario deruptotalea, but the species shares the spawning strategy typical of all danionins: it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner that produces no nest and provides no parental care beyond the act of fertilization. In Devario congeners, courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through the water column or among vegetation, with eggs and milt released simultaneously in brief, close contact between the pair.

Spawning in wild hill-stream populations is likely tied to seasonal changes in flow, temperature and day length, as documented for other Devario species that time reproduction to the monsoon onset or the warming of spring. There is no pair bond, and the scattered eggs receive no further attention from either parent.

Breeding

No aquarium breeding records appear in the published or hobbyist literature for Devario deruptotalea, which remains essentially unknown in the ornamental trade. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus, captive breeding would follow the pattern established for D. malabaricus and similar species: a spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or a mesh bottom over which adults scatter adhesive eggs, followed by immediate removal of the adults to prevent egg predation.

Eggs of Devario scatter onto plants, substrate or into the water column and receive no parental care; adults readily consume their own spawn. At appropriate temperatures, development would be expected to proceed within the range typical for tropical cyprinids — hatching in two to three days, free-swimming fry a day or two later, initial feeding on microscopic live foods progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. The facts.breeding fields reflect the standard danionin pattern: adhesive egg-scattering with no parental care.

In the aquarium

Devario deruptotalea is effectively unknown in the aquarium hobby. Its narrow type-locality range in Manipur, limited documentation, and absence from commercial collection records mean it has not entered the ornamental trade in any documented form. It is a fish of scientific interest as a recently described regional endemic rather than an aquarium subject.

Were it to become available, its hill-stream origin suggests it would require clear, well-oxygenated water with a moderate current, slightly cooler temperatures than lowland tropicals, and a long tank with open swimming space. Devario as a genus encompasses active, schooling fishes that benefit from being kept in groups. Any aquarist working with wild-caught material from the Chindwin system would be advised to consult the original species description and to handle import and husbandry with care given the species' restricted range and uncertain conservation status.

Conservation

Devario deruptotalea has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Described only in 2014 from a single stream in Manipur, it remains known solely from its type locality in the Chindwin drainage — a range so narrow that any local disturbance to the Dutah Stream catchment would constitute a significant threat to the entire known population.

Manipuris streams face pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and the expansion of human settlement across north-eastern India. The combination of a single known locality, a small geographic range, and the general pattern of land-use change in the region makes this species a candidate for future assessment as Vulnerable or Endangered should surveys confirm it remains restricted to its type locality. Until broader survey work is undertaken to determine whether the species occurs elsewhere in the Yu River or adjacent Chindwin tributaries, its status must be regarded as data-sparse.
