Taxonomy & naming
Danio roseus was formally described by Fisk Fang and Maurice Kottelat in 2000, with the type locality recorded as Nam Tok Than Thip, Nong Khai Province, Thailand, in the Mekong basin. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Danio roseus Fang & Kottelat, 2000.
The species was formerly placed in the genus Brachydanio under the old combination Brachydanio rosea, a small-danio catchall that has since been synonymised into Danio. Molecular phylogenetic work, including a mitochondrial genome study published in 2022 (NCBI PMC8843127), confirms the placement of this species within the danionid clade and supports the Fang & Kottelat description among Mekong-endemic danios.
The genus Danio holds the true danios — slim, active, horizontally patterned schooling cyprinids of South and Southeast Asia. The boundary between Danio, Devario and related genera has been actively debated, but we follow the current Catalog of Fishes, which places this species in Danio. The Seriously Fish database still displays the old Brachydanio combination as a historical synonym.
Morphology
Danio roseus is a small, elongate, laterally compressed cyprinid, reaching a maximum of approximately 1.5 in standard length (SL) — making it one of the more modestly sized members of its genus. The body is slim and torpedo-shaped, with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding, and a pair of short barbels at the corner of the upper lip.
The most distinctive feature is the soft rosy or pinkish flush along the flanks, overlaid with fine horizontal striping typical of the Danio group. The colouration is understated compared to the bolder stripes of Danio rerio, but attractive in a school when the pink tones catch the light. The fins are largely transparent to pale.
Sexual dimorphism follows the danio pattern: males are slimmer and more torpedo-shaped overall, while gravid females are noticeably deeper-bellied. The rosy flush may be more pronounced in well-conditioned males.
Habitat
Danio roseus inhabits small streams, spring-fed tributaries and the vicinity of waterfalls in the Mekong drainage of northeastern Thailand (Nong Khai Province), Laos and Myanmar. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic in cool, fast-running water under forest cover, associated with springs and cascades, and also found in the Mekong main channel.
The water it occupies is soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral: FishBase gives pH 6.0–7.5 and hardness 4–13°N, with temperature in the range 68–77 °F. These are cooler conditions than many Southeast Asian species tolerate, reflecting the spring-fed, shaded nature of its preferred habitat. The current is typically brisk and dissolved oxygen high.
The species is described as shy and schooling, favouring reaches with dense riparian vegetation and structural complexity — submerged roots, leaf litter, and overhanging canopy — rather than open, sun-warmed shallows.
Feeding
In the wild, Danio roseus feeds as an omnivorous micropredator, taking small invertebrates from the water column and surface — zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans — supplemented with algal films and organic detritus drifting through the current. Its upturned mouth and active, mid-water posture suit opportunistic foraging in moving water.
In the aquarium it accepts a broad range of small prepared foods — fine flakes and micro-pellets — but condition and colouration are best maintained with regular live and frozen supplements such as daphnia, cyclops, baby brine shrimp and micro-worms. Its small mouth size means food particle size matters: foods sized for nano fish are more appropriate than standard community flake.
Mating
Like all true danios, Danio roseus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no pair bond and no parental care beyond the act of spawning itself. Courtship follows the danio pattern: an attentive male pursues a gravid female through vegetation and over the substrate, pressing close as both fish release eggs and milt simultaneously. There is no nest construction, no territory defence around a spawning site, and no attendance of the eggs after release.
Spawning in the wild is likely tied to seasonal cues — rising water temperatures in spring and early summer, or changes in flow — that correspond to productive periods for zooplankton prey. The eggs are weakly adhesive to non-adhesive and settle among fine-leaved plants, moss or gravel, where they are at immediate risk of being consumed by the spawning adults.
Breeding
Danio roseus can be bred in a dedicated spawning tank set up to mimic its cool, fast, oxygen-rich native habitat. A shallow tank with gentle but steady current, fine-leaved plants or clumps of Java moss, and a layer of small pebbles or marbles on the base — so eggs fall beyond the adults' reach — provides a suitable environment. Water should be soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.2–7.0) at a temperature of 72–77 °F.
A well-conditioned group, or selected pairs of a plump female and an attentive male, is introduced to the spawning tank and typically spawns within a day or two. Eggs are scattered freely among the plants and over the bottom. Adults must be removed after spawning, as they will eat the eggs given access to them. The eggs hatch in approximately two to three days at these temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming within a further two to three days, at which point they can be fed infusoria or commercial fry foods, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. There is no parental care at any stage.
In the aquarium
Danio roseus is an appealing but somewhat more specialised danio than the ubiquitous zebra danio, best suited to a keeper who can meet its preference for cool, well-oxygenated, gently moving water. A tank with a moderate current — provided by a powerhead or spray bar return — at 68–77 °F, soft-to-moderately-hard water and pH around 6.2–7.0 suits it well. Higher temperatures reduce its vigour and longevity.
It is a schooling species that must be kept in groups of at least six; a larger school of ten or more shows far more natural behaviour and reduces the anxiety the species exhibits in small numbers. Its shy disposition makes it best combined with similarly calm, small companions — other cool-water danios, small loaches or peaceful nano fish — rather than boisterous or nippy species that outcompete it at feeding time.
The rosy colouration is most vivid in a well-planted tank with a dark substrate and subdued lighting, where the fish are confident enough to display without stress. Diet variety — including live and frozen small invertebrates — keeps colour and condition at their best.
Conservation
Danio roseus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). The species has a distribution across the Mekong basin in Thailand, Laos and Myanmar and is not currently considered to be in significant decline at the range-wide level.
Its preferred habitat — cool, clear, forest-shaded streams and spring-fed tributaries — is, however, sensitive to deforestation, agricultural runoff and water extraction. Loss of riparian forest cover raises water temperatures and reduces the year-round flow of spring-fed streams; sedimentation from catchment disturbance degrades the clean gravel and rocky substrates these fish depend on. The long-term security of the species in its Mekong stream habitat is therefore tied to the health of the surrounding forest landscape, which faces ongoing pressure across northeastern Thailand and adjacent Laos and Myanmar.
