Taxonomy & naming
Devario apopyris was described by Fang and Kottelat in their 1999 paper on danio species from northern Laos, which simultaneously described three new species from the region. The type locality is a stream near Ban Nakbon, in the Nam Youan watershed, which drains to the Mekong in northern Laos. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Devario apopyris (Fang & Kottelat, 1999), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was placed by Fang and Kottelat in Devario from the outset.
The genus Devario was long treated as a subgenus of Danio before Kottelat and Witte (1999) formally separated it. Devario encompasses the larger, more robust members of the danionin lineage — fish often called giant danios in the hobby — distinguished from the smaller Danio by a suite of osteological and meristic characters. Devario apopyris is characterised by the absence of a lateral line and the absence of the infraorbital process, which help separate it from superficially similar congeners in the Mekong basin. No subspecies or geographic variants are recognised.
Morphology
Devario apopyris is a slim, streamlined cyprinid reaching approximately 1.5 in in standard length — small even for the genus. Like other Devario it lacks barbels and has a moderately upturned mouth suited to surface feeding in shallow water. The most distinctive colour feature is a series of four to six dark vertical bars on the anterior flanks, which grade posteriorly into a horizontal dark stripe that runs along the midlateral line to the base of the caudal-fin rays and continues onto those rays themselves.
The lateral line is incomplete or absent, a character noted in the original description and confirmed by FishBase meristic data. Fin ray counts include 9–10 soft dorsal rays and 12–13 soft anal rays; vertebral count runs to 33–35. The ground colour in life is not well documented for wild individuals, but the combination of anterior barring and a posterior horizontal stripe is diagnostic within its range. Sexual dimorphism follows the typical danionin pattern: gravid females are deeper-bellied than males.
Habitat
The type and principal known habitat of Devario apopyris is a small stream in the Nam Youan watershed, a tributary system of the upper Mekong in northern Laos near the Chinese border. FishBase records the microhabitat as a stream with slow current, shallow water no more than 8 in deep, and a substrate of small gravel to mud — conditions typical of lowland agricultural margins in the region, as the surrounding landscape consists largely of rice paddy fields.
The species is presumed to extend into adjacent areas of Yunnan province in southern China, given the continuity of the drainage, though confirmed records outside the type locality are lacking. The Mekong basin at this latitude experiences a strongly seasonal monsoon climate, with streams swelling and warming markedly in the wet season and contracting to shallow, clearer pools in the dry months. Water conditions are likely near-neutral in pH and soft to moderately hard, consistent with the regional geology of the northern Lao highlands.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study has been published for Devario apopyris specifically. Like other small Devario of mainland Southeast Asian streams it is assumed to be an opportunistic omnivore and surface-oriented micropredator, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and fallen terrestrial insects — along with algae and fine organic material. The upturned mouth and shallow-water habitat point to surface and mid-water foraging along stream margins.
In the aquarium, captive experience with the species is limited and rarely documented in the hobby literature. By analogy with other small Devario, it would be expected to accept small live and frozen foods readily — daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms — alongside suitably sized quality flake or micro-pellet. Varied nutrition supports colour and condition in small danionins.
Mating
Devario apopyris is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner universal among danionin cyprinids. Courtship involves an active driving male pursuing a gravid female through shallow, plant-fringed water, pressing close alongside her as eggs and milt are released in brief, repeated bursts. No nest is constructed and no pair bond is maintained beyond the act of spawning.
In the wild, breeding is likely tied to the seasonal rise in water level and temperature at the onset of the monsoon, when newly flooded stream margins offer shelter among vegetation for scattered eggs. Adults do not attend or defend the eggs, and cannibalism of eggs is probable if resources permit — as is the norm across the danio clade.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Devario apopyris has not been formally documented in the aquarium literature; the species is rarely encountered in the hobby trade. By the well-established biology of its congeners, breeding would involve a separate shallow spawning vessel with fine-leaved plants, Java moss or a substrate mesh through which the scattered adhesive eggs can fall out of the adults' reach. A small rise in water temperature and a partial water change mimicking the monsoon trigger would likely stimulate spawning.
Eggs are presumed to be small and adhesive, hatching within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae becoming independent within a further day or two. First foods for fry would be infusoria or commercial fry food of fine grade, progressing rapidly to newly hatched brine shrimp. No parental care is given at any stage; adults should be removed after spawning to protect the eggs.
In the aquarium
Devario apopyris is an uncommon species in the aquarium hobby and is seldom available through normal retail channels. Its small size — under 1.5 in — and presumed active, shoaling behaviour make it suitable in principle for a well-filtered, moderately sized aquarium maintained at near-neutral pH and a temperature in the mid-twenties Celsius range, reflecting its Mekong lowland origins. A longer tank with open midwater swimming space, some fine-leaved planting and gentle flow would suit it well.
Given the species' Vulnerable status and restricted natural range, responsible acquisition is important: any specimens entering the trade should ideally be captive-bred or sourced through collectors operating under appropriate permits. The hobbyist literature on this fish is sparse, and those who do obtain it are in a position to contribute observations on behaviour, breeding and condition that would be genuinely useful to the broader understanding of this little-known species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Devario apopyris as Vulnerable (VU) — a reflection of the species' extremely limited known range, which appears confined to one or a small number of streams in the Nam Youan watershed of northern Laos. The surrounding landscape of rice paddies poses direct threats through agricultural runoff, water extraction for irrigation, and the physical modification of stream margins, all of which can degrade or eliminate the shallow, slow-moving stream habitats the species occupies.
FishBase records the species' resilience as high, with a modelled population doubling time of under fifteen months, which offers some buffer against short-term disturbance. Nevertheless, a single-stream or single-watershed range means that any localised catastrophic event — a pesticide spill, channel diversion or prolonged drought — could devastate the entire known population. Surveys to determine whether the species extends into adjacent Yunnan or other Lao drainages would materially improve the accuracy of future assessments. No captive assurance colony is known to exist.
