Anguilla marmorata, the giant mottled eel, is one of the largest and most wide-ranging members of the family Anguillidae — the true eels. Unlike the spiny eels (Mastacembelidae) or the swamp eels (Synbranchidae) that share the aquarium hobby's 'eel' label, this is a genuine anguilliform eel, fully catadromous and semelparous: it spends years growing in freshwater rivers, lakes, and estuaries across the Indo-Pacific, then makes a single, irreversible migration to the open ocean to spawn, after which it dies. It is a powerful, marbled-brown predator capable of reaching two metres in length, ecologically important as a top benthic predator across a vast range from East Africa to the Pacific islands, and currently assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List — the most widely distributed of all the freshwater eels, though, like its relatives, exposed to barriers to migration, glass-eel exploitation, and habitat degradation across parts of its range.

Taxonomy & naming

Anguilla marmorata was formally described by the French naturalists Jean René Constant Quoy and Joseph Paul Gaimard in 1824, from material collected during the voyage of the Uranie in the Moluccas (now Maluku, Indonesia). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid fish names — places it in the genus Anguilla, the type genus of the family Anguillidae, within the order Anguilliformes. This is the order of true eels, and the distinction matters: the spiny eels (Mastacembelidae, order Synbranchiformes) and swamp eels (Synbranchidae) that commonly appear in the aquarium hobby alongside Anguilla are not closely related to them at all, their eel-like bodies being the product of convergent evolution on a burrowing, elongate body plan.

Within the Indo-Pacific Anguilla assemblage, A. marmorata is morphologically cryptic with two relatives: the Indian mottled eel (A. bengalensis) and the East African longfinned eel (A. mossambica). These three species can occur sympatrically in some regions and are not reliably separable by body pattern alone. DNA-barcoding studies using the COI gene — including work published by Suzuki et al. (2011) and Guo et al. (2016) — confirm they are genetically distinct and emphasise that molecular methods are essential for accurate identification in wild surveys, trade monitoring, and conservation assessments.

Morphology

Anguilla marmorata earns both its common name and its species epithet (Latin: marmoratus, marbled) from its distinctive coloration: the body is medium to dark brown, covered with a dense, irregular pattern of darker brown to olive mottling that gives a marbled appearance distinct from the more uniform pigmentation of related species. The belly is pale cream to yellowish. Fins are continuous — the dorsal runs far forward, meeting the caudal and anal fins around the pointed tail — and the pectoral fins are small and rounded.

It is the largest anguillid eel. FishBase records standard lengths approaching 78.5 in, and robust fish of 39.5–59 in are not unusual in river systems where populations remain intact. The body is powerfully muscled, round in cross-section anteriorly and compressed toward the tail, and covered in tiny embedded cycloid scales set in a heavy mucous coat that makes the fish slippery and almost scaleless to the touch. The jaws are well-developed for gripping prey, and the mouth is large. Like all Anguilla, the giant mottled eel undergoes a dramatic 'silvering' transformation before its oceanic spawning migration, in which the eyes enlarge, the pectoral fins darken, and the belly turns silver — the classic silver-eel stage of anguillid life history.

Habitat

During its continental growth phase, which can span eight to twelve or more years, Anguilla marmorata occupies a broad range of freshwater and brackish environments. It is found in rivers, lakes, streams, lagoons, and estuaries from East Africa and Madagascar eastward through the Indian Ocean rim — including the Maldives, Sri Lanka, India, and the Andaman Islands — across Southeast Asia (Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea), through the Pacific island chains, and south into northeastern Australia. This is the widest natural range of any anguillid eel.

In rivers it favours rocky, well-oxygenated sections as well as the slower, silty reaches of lowland floodplains, and it tolerates a wide salinity range during the growth phase, moving freely between fresh and brackish water. Temperature tolerance across its range is correspondingly broad — from the cooler highland rivers of island interiors to warm lowland tropical channels. It is a benthic species that shelters under rocks, in root tangles, and in burrows by day, emerging after dark to forage.

Feeding

Anguilla marmorata is a generalist predator and opportunistic omnivore throughout its long freshwater growth phase. The diet includes small fishes, crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, molluscs, and organic detritus, with larger individuals increasingly piscivorous. Foraging is primarily nocturnal, with the eel using its well-developed olfactory system to locate prey in low-visibility benthic environments.

Its wide dietary range and tolerance of varied habitats make it a resilient occupant of degraded river systems, though large individuals require access to productive stretches of river with substantial invertebrate and fish communities to maintain condition through the many years of the growth phase that precede the spawning migration.

Mating

Like all Anguilla species, the giant mottled eel is semelparous — it reproduces once in its entire life. After years of growth in fresh and brackish water, physiologically mature eels undergo the silvering transformation and cease feeding. They then migrate downstream and out to sea, undertaking a deep-ocean journey to oceanic spawning grounds. For A. marmorata the precise spawning location in the open ocean has not been definitively identified, though based on the biology of other anguillids it is presumed to lie in warm tropical oceanic water, possibly in the western Pacific.

At the spawning site, the adults release eggs and sperm into open water, fertilisation is external, and the adults die. There is no courtship in the conventional sense observable to researchers, no pair bond, and no parental care whatsoever. The entire reproductive effort is consumed in a single, fatal migration.

Breeding

Anguilla marmorata cannot be bred in captivity, and this is not a limitation of husbandry technique but a fundamental biological reality. The species is catadromous and semelparous: it must migrate to the open ocean to spawn, and once it begins that migration it does not feed, it does not turn back, and it dies after spawning. No aquarium or aquaculture facility can replicate the oceanic conditions required.

Commercial eel 'farming' that produces Anguilla species for food markets is not a true breeding programme. It depends entirely on the capture of wild-caught glass eels — the transparent, leaf-shaped leptocephalus larvae that drift back to coasts on ocean currents after hatching at sea — which are then grown on in tanks or ponds. This trade in glass eels is one of the principal threats to Anguilla populations worldwide, including A. marmorata. The leptocephalus larval stage lasts months and involves transoceanic drift before the larvae metamorphose into the elver stage and recruit to fresh water. All of this happens at sea and is entirely beyond human control.

In the aquarium

Anguilla marmorata is not suited to the home aquarium. Adults are large predators that reach well over a metre, are powerful enough to displace heavy tank equipment, and are relentlessly escape-prone — Anguilla will find any gap in a lid, emerge at night, and die on the floor. A tightly sealed, heavy aquarium is the minimum structural requirement. They are scaleless and, like all eels, acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and sudden water-quality changes.

Beyond the practical difficulties, wild-caught Anguilla are ecologically important, often protected under national fisheries law, and their capture for the ornamental trade contributes to pressure on wild populations. Juveniles do occasionally enter the trade, typically as accidental bycatch, and may survive for years in large, well-filtered tanks with appropriate shelter and live or frozen prey — but they are a long-term commitment for a fish that cannot be bred in captivity, may live a decade or more before undergoing its silvering transformation, and will eventually need to be responsibly retired. For most hobbyists seeking an 'eel', the spiny eels of the family Mastacembelidae offer a far more appropriate and aquarium-adapted alternative.

Conservation

Anguilla marmorata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List — it is the most widespread anguillid eel in the world, ranging from East Africa across the Indo-Pacific to French Polynesia, and that vast range buffers it against the range-wide collapse seen in the temperate eels. Least Concern is not a clean bill of health, however. The threats operate across the full life cycle of the species: dams and weirs block upstream migration of recruiting glass eels and downstream migration of silver eels, fragmenting populations and preventing adults from reaching the ocean to spawn; water extraction reduces flow in rivers critical to the continental growth phase; and the glass-eel trade — the capture of recruiting juveniles for aquaculture grow-out — removes enormous quantities of wild animals from the system before they can contribute to reproduction.

Habitat degradation through pollution, sedimentation, and lowland river modification adds further pressure across much of the Southeast Asian and Pacific range. The species' wide distribution has historically masked the severity of local and regional declines, but molecular studies — particularly those using DNA barcoding to reliably distinguish A. marmorata from the cryptic A. bengalensis and A. mossambica in mixed surveys — have highlighted the importance of species-level monitoring to detect change. Recovery requires the removal or modification of migration barriers, regulation of the glass-eel trade, and river habitat protection across a geographically vast range spanning multiple national jurisdictions.
