Taxonomy & naming
Anguilla reinhardtii was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1867. It belongs to the genus Anguilla Schrank, 1798, the type genus of the family Anguillidae and the sole genus of the catadromous true eels. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) places it firmly in Anguilla alongside the approximately fourteen other Anguillidae species distributed across the Atlantic, Indo-Pacific and Australasian regions.
The Anguillidae are true eels in the order Anguilliformes, quite distinct from the spiny eels (Mastacembelidae, order Synbranchiformes) and swamp eels (Synbranchidae) that share the aquarium trade's loose use of the word 'eel'. The convergence on an elongate, burrowing body form across these lineages is an example of independent evolution, not shared ancestry. The speckled longfin eel is one of two Anguilla species native to Australia and New Zealand, the other being the short-finned eel A. australis, distinguished by the relative length of the dorsal fin — in A. reinhardtii the dorsal fin origin lies well ahead of the anal fin, producing the 'longfin' of its name.
The species epithet reinhardtii honours the Danish zoologist Johannes Theodor Reinhardt, a nineteenth-century professor at the University of Copenhagen who worked extensively on vertebrate collections from the southern hemisphere.
Morphology
The speckled longfin eel is a large, robust anguillid. FishBase records a maximum total length of 65 in, with females typically reaching around 39.5 in and males remaining considerably smaller — an example of pronounced female-biased sexual size dimorphism common across the catadromous Anguilla. The body is cylindrical anteriorly, tapering to a laterally compressed tail, with the skin smooth to the touch but embedded with tiny cycloid scales beneath a coat of mucus.
The dorsal fin is long, originating well forward of the anal fin — the longfin character that separates this species from A. australis — and both fins are continuous with the caudal fin around the tail tip. The coloration in freshwater-resident ('yellow-eel') phase is typically olive to brown on the back, shading to cream or yellowish on the belly, often with a marbled or mottled pattern of darker spots and speckling on the flanks that accounts for the 'speckled' common name. As the eel approaches sexual maturity and the pre-migratory 'silver eel' phase, the eyes enlarge markedly, the flanks become silver, the back darkens, and the gut degenerates — external signs of the profound physiological transformation preceding the ocean migration.
Habitat
Anguilla reinhardtii is native to eastern Australia from Cape York Peninsula in Queensland south through New South Wales and into Victoria, as well as to Tasmania, southern New Guinea, New Caledonia and Lord Howe Island. The species occupies a broad latitudinal band from roughly 10°S to 43°S, which encompasses both tropical rivers in northern Queensland and cool temperate streams in southern Victoria and Tasmania — a range that speaks to the eel's considerable thermal tolerance.
During the freshwater growth phase, which may last five to thirty years or more depending on sex and food availability, A. reinhardtii inhabits rivers, lakes, wetlands, coastal lagoons and estuaries. It tolerates a wide range of freshwater and low-salinity environments, burrowing into soft substrate, sheltering under rocks, roots and bank overhangs, and moving opportunistically between connected water bodies. FishBase records a temperature range from around 39–55 °F for part of its range, reflecting the cool temperate streams of southeastern Australia; in the tropical north, temperatures are considerably higher. The eel is tolerant of brackish conditions, particularly in estuaries and coastal reaches, but it is most often encountered in fresh water during the growth phase.
Feeding
Anguilla reinhardtii is an opportunistic and generalist carnivore, and one of the most formidable freshwater predators in its native range. In Australian rivers it takes invertebrates — worms, crustaceans, insect larvae — when small, expanding its diet with size to include fish, crayfish and, remarkably, larger prey such as small turtles, frogs and even small waterbirds, according to accounts compiled from Australian Museum sources. It is primarily nocturnal, hunting by a combination of olfaction and lateral-line sensing in dark or turbid water.
The jaw structure is powerful and the eel bites and rotates to tear away pieces of prey too large to swallow whole. Feeding rate is linked to water temperature; eels in cooler temperate streams feed more slowly and grow more slowly than those in warm northern rivers. During the pre-migratory silver-eel phase, feeding largely ceases as the gut degenerates — the eel lives off its own energy reserves throughout the oceanic migration and spawning.
Mating
Like all members of the genus Anguilla, A. reinhardtii is catadromous and semelparous: it mates only once, far out at sea, and dies after spawning. There is no pair bond. The silver-eel transformation that precedes migration is triggered by a combination of environmental cues including photoperiod and temperature; after years or decades in fresh water, sexually mature adults (the switch to maturity is itself partially environmentally cued) move downstream and enter the sea, orienting toward the Coral Sea.
The precise spawning location of A. reinhardtii has long been elusive, but the weight of evidence — including ocean-current modelling that matches the drift patterns of leptocephalus larvae — points to spawning in the Coral Sea, with New Caledonia identified as a likely general area. Adults aggregate at depth to spawn; males arrive first and await migrating females. The mechanisms by which eels navigate oceously across hundreds or thousands of kilometres to a spawning ground they have never visited are still not fully understood, though chemical, magnetic and celestial cues are all implicated in Anguilla navigation studies.
Breeding
Anguilla reinhardtii cannot be bred in captivity. This is not a limitation of husbandry technique but a fundamental aspect of the species' biology: spawning requires the deep open ocean, and the complete physiological transformation that precedes it — gut regression, eye enlargement, silvering — cannot be reversed once begun. The eggs and sperm of all Anguilla species have never been obtained in quantity under aquarium or pond conditions without hormonal induction, and even in laboratory settings early larval survival beyond the leptocephalus stage has been achieved only with great difficulty in A. japonica research programs.
After spawning, both parents die. The fertilised eggs hatch into leptocephalus larvae — transparent, leaf-shaped creatures quite unlike the adult eel — that drift passively on ocean currents for a period estimated at around twelve months before reaching coastal and estuarine waters of eastern Australia, where they transform first into glass eels and then into pigmented elvers that ascend rivers. Commercial 'farming' of Anguilla species, including A. reinhardtii, therefore depends entirely on the capture of wild glass eels at river mouths, raising significant conservation concerns shared by anguillid species globally.
In the aquarium
The speckled longfin eel is not a conventional aquarium fish and should not be sought out as one. It is a large, powerful, long-lived wild animal: females routinely exceed a metre in length, individuals may live for decades, and the species is protected under Australian state fisheries legislation across much of its range, making collection, keeping and trade either regulated or prohibited without specific permits. Obtaining one legally and housing it appropriately — an enormous, tightly sealed aquarium or pond, soft substrate for burrowing, powerful filtration, and compatible tankmates it will not eat — is a serious undertaking beyond most hobbyists.
Like all Anguilla, A. reinhardtii is scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications, salt imbalances and other chemical stressors. It is nocturnal, secretive and a dedicated escape artist: even a heavy cover with small gaps will not contain a determined large eel, and eels regularly leave tanks and die on the floor overnight. Any aquarist who does encounter this species in a legal, regulated context (wildlife rehabilitation, research, public aquaria) should provide subdued lighting, heavy cover, caves and a deep sand bed, and feed chunky meaty items — whole prey fish, prawn, mussel — at night. Do not plan on breeding it.
Conservation
Anguilla reinhardtii is currently assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its relatively wide range across eastern Australia and the western Pacific and the absence of documented range-wide population collapse. However, it shares the vulnerability profile of the genus Anguilla more broadly: all catadromous, semelparous eels are inherently susceptible to overfishing and habitat degradation because any adult removed from the river before spawning represents not just one fish but the potential loss of an entire reproductive attempt that occurs only once in a lifetime.
The principal threats to A. reinhardtii in Australia are migratory barriers — dams and weirs that prevent both upstream juvenile recruitment and downstream silver-eel migration — and glass-eel harvesting, which removes individuals before they have had any reproductive opportunity at all. Across the broader Anguillidae, the near-global declines of A. anguilla (Critically Endangered), A. rostrata (Endangered) and A. japonica (Endangered) stand as a warning about the fragility of this life-history strategy under sustained exploitation. The fact that A. reinhardtii is assessed as Least Concern reflects its current status, not immunity to the same pressures, and continued monitoring and fisheries management are warranted.
