Monopterus ichthyophoides is a recently described swamp eel from the highlands of Mizoram, north-eastern India — not a true eel at all, but a member of the family Synbranchidae, the order Synbranchiformes, whose eel-like body is a case of convergent evolution on an elongate, burrowing way of life. Known from just two localities in the Barak River drainage, it was formally named from the Sawleng River in 2011 and distinguished from its congeners by a remarkably low vertebral count, a well-scaled body, and the placement of the vent unusually far back along the trunk. It is a narrow-range, poorly known species with no common name in the aquarium trade, air-breathing and adapted to warm, stagnant or slow freshwater habitats at considerable altitude.

Taxonomy & naming

Monopterus ichthyophoides was described by Britz, Lalremsanga, Lalrotluanga, and Lalramliana in 2011 in Zootaxa (volume 2936, pages 51–58), based on specimens collected from the Sawleng River, a tributary of the Tuirial River in the Barak River drainage of Mizoram, India. The holotype (PUCMF 3005) measures 7.5 in total length. The species epithet, ichthyophoides, derives from the Greek ichthys (fish), ophis (snake), and the suffix -oides (resembling) — meaning roughly 'fish-snake-like', a reference to the serpentine, elongate body form shared across the swamp eels.

The genus Monopterus (family Synbranchidae, order Synbranchiformes) contains the Asian swamp eels, sometimes historically placed in the genera Amphipnous or Ophichthys, both of which have been folded into Monopterus under the Catalog of Fishes arrangement. The Synbranchiformes are unrelated to the true eels (Anguilliformes); the similar body shape is the result of independent adaptation to the same burrowing, oxygen-poor habitat rather than shared ancestry. Monopterus ichthyophoides stands out from most congeners by having only 114–117 vertebrae (versus 126–188 in other members of the genus), a body covered in numerous small cycloid scales that extend progressively onto the abdomen, and the vent positioned at approximately 80% of total length along the already-scaled ventral surface — a suite of characters that prompted the authors to consider the possibility of a novel genus, ultimately retained within Monopterus pending broader phylogenetic analysis.

Morphology

The holotype and paratypes of M. ichthyophoides measure up to roughly 7.5 in total length, though whether this represents anywhere near the maximum adult size is unknown, as the described material is small. The body is elongate and cylindrical, tapering toward both ends in the typical swamp-eel fashion, with no paired fins and greatly reduced median fins. The head is small and the mouth opens widely, consistent with a predatory habit.

Unusually among swamp eels, the body is well covered in small, circular (cycloid) scales. These scales appear from about 50–60% of total length along the back and from 67–71% TL along the belly, extending to the vent, which itself sits in a fully scaled region at approximately 80% TL. Only two branchiostegal rays are present (compared with five to six in most Monopterus), and the lower vertebral count (114–117) is the lowest recorded for the genus. These morphological peculiarities, combined with its geographic isolation in a highland drainage, suggest M. ichthyophoides may represent a relict or divergent lineage within the swamp eels.

Habitat

The two known collection localities for Monopterus ichthyophoides both lie in the Barak River drainage of Mizoram at considerable elevation — the Sawleng River type locality sits at 2966 ft above sea level, while a second record comes from a public well at Luangmual, Aizawl, at about 1,20 ft. This is a notably elevated range for a swamp eel, a family more commonly associated with lowland rice paddies, ditches and floodplains.

Based on the collection notes from the type locality, the habitat is warm, stagnant or slow-moving freshwater with muddy banks and soft, muddy substrate — conditions typical for Monopterus more broadly. Like all members of the genus, M. ichthyophoides is an obligate air-breather capable of tolerating severely oxygen-depleted water, surviving in the poorly oxygenated still water of ditches, stagnant pools, and in this case, an urban public well. Very little else is documented about microhabitat preferences, seasonal behaviour, or depth use for this species.

Feeding

No feeding studies have been conducted specifically on Monopterus ichthyophoides. The Monopterus genus as a whole is an opportunistic predator of benthic and near-bottom prey — small fish, shrimp, crustaceans, insect larvae, and oligochaete worms are recorded prey items across the genus, and M. ichthyophoides almost certainly takes similar prey in the field.

The wide, protrusible mouth and sensitive, thickened lips that characterise swamp eels allow them to engulf prey quickly, and most hunting appears to take place at night or in reduced light. Given the limited, nutrient-rich habitats from which this species is known — a muddy highland stream and a well — its diet is likely dominated by whatever invertebrates and small vertebrates are locally available.

Mating

No direct observations of mating behaviour have been recorded for Monopterus ichthyophoides. Based on what is known from the genus, M. ichthyophoides is almost certainly a protogynous hermaphrodite: individuals begin life as females and later transition to male, with sex change mediated by size, age, and social context. This pattern is consistent across Monopterus and is the basis of all mating dynamics in the group.

Males in the Monopterus genus are known to construct mucus-bound floating bubble-nests at the water's edge — often anchored to aquatic vegetation or the undercut bank of a ditch or stream — and it is presumably the male that initiates spawning and guards the nest. Whether seasonal flooding, rainfall, or photoperiod triggers spawning in this highland Mizoram population is unknown.

Breeding

Breeding in M. ichthyophoides has not been documented directly. In the wider genus Monopterus, the male constructs a floating bubble-nest of mucus and plant debris, typically at the margins of standing or slow water, where eggs and larvae are deposited and guarded. The male provides genuine parental care, tending the nest and defending the eggs and hatched larvae from disturbance — a marked contrast to the scatter-and-abandon strategy of the spiny eels, and equally distinct from the catadromous, once-in-a-lifetime ocean migration of the true eels.

Given the highland, isolated range of M. ichthyophoides, it would not be surprising if breeding is linked to the monsoon season and the temporary abundance of still water in ditches and flooded margins at altitude, but this is inference from the genus-level pattern rather than observation of the species. It has not been kept in the home aquarium in any documented capacity.

In the aquarium

Monopterus ichthyophoides is not available in the aquarium trade and there are no records of it being kept in captivity. It is a narrow-range, recently described species known from a small number of specimens in highland Mizoram, and it has not entered commercial collection circuits. Any account of its captive care would therefore be speculative, though the requirements of close Monopterus relatives provide a reasonable guide.

Swamp eels as a group demand a tightly sealed, escape-proof aquarium — they are air-breathers that routinely leave the water, and any gap in a lid will be found and exploited. A soft sandy substrate for burrowing, dim lighting, and plenty of sheltered retreats suit the nocturnal, secretive lifestyle. They are scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications. Given the highland, cooler origins of M. ichthyophoides compared with the lowland Asian swamp eels like M. albus, it is possible that this species tolerates or even prefers somewhat cooler water — but this is unknown. Any collection of wild specimens would require appropriate permits and should not be encouraged for a species with such a small known range.

Conservation

Monopterus ichthyophoides has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026. The species was described only in 2011 from two localities in a single river drainage in Mizoram, north-eastern India, and the full extent of its range remains unknown. Its apparent restriction to the Barak River drainage at elevations above 2953 ft is consistent with a narrow endemic, and the known records include a public well — suggesting the species can persist in disturbed, anthropogenic water bodies, which may be a factor in its favour.

Nevertheless, the combination of a small known range, limited sampling, and the broader pressures on freshwater habitats in north-eastern India — including watershed modification, pollution from agricultural and urban runoff, and the intensification of land use across Mizoram — all argue for caution. Without a formal survey to establish range extent and population density, the conservation status of this species cannot be reliably assessed. It is the kind of recently described, narrow-range synbranchid that would benefit from targeted herpetofaunal and ichthyofaunal surveys in the Barak drainage.
