Taxonomy & naming
Monopterus desilvai was described by J. R. Bailey and C. Gans in 1998 from material collected in the Bolgoda swamp, a coastal estuarine wetland on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places the species in Monopterus Lacépède, 1800, the largest genus of the family Synbranchidae. The genus formerly included names such as Amphipnous and Ophichthys as synonyms; a 2020 taxonomic revision reclassified this species under the combination Ophichthys desilvai, but the Catalog of Fishes continues to recognise Monopterus desilvai as the valid name, and that treatment is followed here.
Synbranchidae belongs to the order Synbranchiformes, not to the Anguilliformes that contains the true eels. The eel-like body is a classic example of convergent evolution — an elongate, finless or near-finless form shared by animals that burrow through mud and dense aquatic vegetation — rather than evidence of close relationship to moray eels, congers, or the commercially important Anguilla. Monopterus is distributed across South Asia, South-East Asia, and parts of East Asia, with some species now invasive in North America.
Morphology
Like all members of the genus, Monopterus desilvai is deeply elongate, scaleless to the eye, and mucus-coated, with the body tapering to a fine point at the tail. The pectoral and pelvic fins are entirely absent, the dorsal and anal fins are reduced to low skin-folds continuous around the tail, and no visible spines are present — features that distinguish swamp eels from the spiny eels of Mastacembelidae. The gill openings are joined into a single, narrow ventral slit, reflecting the animal's heavy reliance on aerial respiration.
The species is described as poorly known, and detailed morphometric data for M. desilvai specifically are sparse in the published literature. Based on related species within Monopterus, typical adults are likely to reach 12–19.5 in in total length, though species-specific size records in the cache are not available. The skin is typically dull brownish to grey, without the bright patterning of ornamental species, and the eyes are reduced — the common name "blind eel" reflects that eye function in this species is minimal.
Habitat
Monopterus desilvai is a freshwater, demersal species restricted to lowland coastal floodplain environments on the west coast of Sri Lanka. The type locality is the Bolgoda swamp, an estuarine-influenced coastal wetland south-west of Colombo, and the species is also recorded from paddy fields and swamp margins in the surrounding lowland zone. The habitat is characterised by warm, still to sluggish, often highly turbid and oxygen-poor water over soft mud substrate.
Like other swamp eels, M. desilvai is an obligate air-breather that surfaces periodically to gulp atmospheric oxygen and can tolerate the stagnant, poorly oxygenated conditions of swamps, rice paddies, and drainage ditches where most fish cannot survive. It buries itself in soft mud, emerging to feed and breathe. Leafy vegetable plots cultivated within the swamps are noted as subsidiary habitat, suggesting a degree of tolerance for low-intensity agricultural land. The species is entirely freshwater and not known to enter marine or strongly brackish conditions.
Feeding
Specific dietary studies on Monopterus desilvai have not been published, and the species-level data remain sparse. Based on the biology of the genus — and particularly the well-studied M. albus — swamp eels in this group are generalist carnivores and opportunistic predators that exploit whatever benthic invertebrates, small fish, and organic material are available in the soft-bottom, turbid environments they inhabit.
In the paddies and swamp margins of western Sri Lanka the likely prey base includes aquatic insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and small fish. The swamp eels hunt by moving slowly through shallow water and soft substrate, using chemosensory and tactile cues rather than vision, which is consistent with the reduced eyes seen in M. desilvai. The species is noted as commercially harvested for food in Sri Lanka, indicating it reaches a size sufficient to be of culinary interest.
Mating
Monopterus desilvai, like the broader genus, is assumed to be a protogynous hermaphrodite — individuals are born female and later transition to male as they grow, a pattern well-documented in M. albus and believed to characterise Monopterus generally. Species-specific mating observations for M. desilvai have not been published, but inferences from the genus indicate that larger, older males hold territories or burrow sites and court smaller females.
In M. albus and related species, spawning activity intensifies when water temperatures rise above approximately 82 °F, and males adopt burrow entrances or construct nests in which courtship and egg deposition occur. Given the warm tropical climate of lowland Sri Lanka, breeding in M. desilvai is likely year-round or tied to the wet-season rainfall pattern, but this remains unstudied. The extreme rarity of the species and the degraded state of its habitat mean that wild mating behaviour has not been observed in the field.
Breeding
Swamp eels in the genus Monopterus are notable for genuine paternal care — a trait unusual among fishes of heavily modified agricultural wetlands. The male builds and guards a bubble-nest of mucus at the entrance to a bank burrow or within aquatic vegetation. Eggs are deposited into the nest, and the male remains on guard through incubation, which in related species takes roughly five to nine days at temperatures of 77–88 °F. The male continues to guard the larvae after hatching until they are free-swimming.
No captive breeding records for Monopterus desilvai specifically exist in the available literature, and the species is so poorly known and so rarely encountered that all breeding accounts are inferred from the genus-level pattern documented for M. albus. The combination of hermaphroditism, bubble-nest guarding, and parental care makes this a biologically remarkable group, but its conservation status means that captive study would require a carefully managed ex situ programme; this has not yet been attempted for M. desilvai.
In the aquarium
Monopterus desilvai is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a Critically Endangered endemic of a small area of coastal Sri Lanka, it is not collected for the ornamental trade, and there is no captive population outside any potential conservation-breeding context. No care data specific to this species have been published.
For completeness, the general husbandry requirements of swamp eels apply: a tight, fully sealed aquarium lid is essential because Monopterus species are accomplished escape artists that breathe air and will leave an open tank; a soft mud or sand substrate into which the animal can burrow is required; water should be warm and still; and the fish are sensitive to copper-based medications. Any individual encountered should be regarded as wild-caught and of potential conservation significance. This species should not be kept privately, and any researcher with access to living specimens should liaise with Sri Lankan wildlife authorities.
Conservation
Monopterus desilvai is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List (2019). The assessment is grounded in its extremely restricted range — the species is endemic to Sri Lanka and known only from the lowland coastal floodplain and Bolgoda swamp on the west coast — combined with ongoing declines driven by habitat loss and overfishing of mature individuals. The IUCN rationale cites agricultural intensification and paddy-field runoff as the primary habitat threats, alongside direct commercial harvest as a food fish.
The lowland wetlands of western Sri Lanka are among the most heavily modified landscapes on the island. Colombo's urban expansion, drainage of swamps for agriculture and development, pesticide and fertiliser runoff from paddies, and water diversion have reduced and degraded the habitats available to this species. Because Monopterus desilvai is harvested for food and appears to be commercially significant at local scale, overfishing of a small, isolated, poorly-reproducing population compounds habitat pressure. No targeted conservation programme for this species is known to be in place, and the lack of basic biological data — body size, population estimates, distribution beyond the type locality — makes even planning such a programme difficult.
