Taxonomy & naming
Ophisternon afrum was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1909, with the type locality at Mansoa Point (the Mansao/Geba river system) in what is now Guinea-Bissau. It belongs to the family Synbranchidae and the order Synbranchiformes — the same order that includes the spiny eels, but a distinct family whose members are the true swamp eels. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names, retains the species in the genus Ophisternon.
The genus Ophisternon is unusually wide-ranging for a synbranchid, spanning West Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the Neotropics (including cave-adapted species in the Yucatán). Ophisternon afrum is the sole African representative in the genus. It should not be confused with the Asian and American Ophisternon species, nor with the Asian swamp eels of Monopterus, which share the air-breathing synbranchid body plan but belong to a different lineage within the family.
The epithet afrum is Latin, meaning 'of Africa' or 'African', a straightforward reference to the species' continental distribution. There is no old synonymy under other genus names for this species in common usage; it has remained in Ophisternon since its description.
Morphology
Ophisternon afrum reaches a maximum known length of approximately 21 in total length. The body is naked and elongate, with a cylindrical cross-section — typical of synbranchids, whose body form has converged on that of true eels through entirely independent evolution. There are no paired fins whatsoever; the pectoral and pelvic fins are absent. The dorsal and anal fins are greatly reduced, appearing as low, rayless ridges that meet the caudal fin and give the tail a seamlessly tapered appearance.
Adult fish are dark, reportedly approaching near-black in fully mature individuals; juveniles are described as clearer and less pigmented. As in other synbranchids, the gill apparatus is modified: the gill openings are reduced or fused to a single midventral slit, and the fish supplements aquatic respiration with atmospheric air gulped at the surface. The body is covered in a heavy coat of mucus but lacks obvious scales to the eye.
Habitat
The Guinea swamp eel is a freshwater species associated with slow-moving or still water bodies with abundant aquatic vegetation. Its range spans coastal and near-coastal lowland systems in West Africa — the Mansao and Geba river basins of Guinea-Bissau and the Niger delta region of Nigeria. FishBase records it across a tropical latitudinal band of approximately 17°N to 3°N.
It is capable of tolerating brackish conditions, a trait shared by several other Ophisternon species and consistent with life in the lower reaches of coastal West African rivers where freshwater and estuarine conditions may grade into one another. As a facultative air-breather, it can endure hypoxic, stagnant, and organically enriched water — the sort of low-oxygen conditions typical of vegetated swamps, sluggish river backwaters, and seasonally flooded margins. It is not known from cave environments, unlike some other Ophisternon species.
Feeding
Field diet data for Ophisternon afrum specifically are sparse in the available literature. As a synbranchid, it is presumed to be a generalist carnivore in the manner of its relatives — foraging for invertebrates (worms, crustaceans, insect larvae) and small fishes in the bottom substrate and among aquatic vegetation. The reduced fins and elongate body suit an ambush or searching predator of slow, thickly vegetated water rather than an open-water pursuit predator.
Facultative air-breathing gives the species access to shallow, organic-rich microhabitats where many competitors and predators cannot persist, likely widening the foraging opportunity relative to obligate gill-breathers. Detailed stomach-content analyses from the wild have not been located in the accessible literature for this species.
Mating
Ophisternon afrum is a swamp eel, not a true eel, and it does not undertake any catadromous migration to the sea to spawn. Reproduction occurs in fresh water. The reproductive biology of this particular species is poorly documented, but the Synbranchidae family context is informative. In the better-studied Asian swamp eel Monopterus albus, males construct and guard a floating bubble-nest of mucus at a bank burrow, and many synbranchids exhibit protogynous hermaphroditism — individuals are born female and change to male with size or age.
Whether O. afrum follows the same hermaphroditic pattern is not confirmed in the accessible literature. FishBase notes that the male guards a nest or burrow, suggesting some form of paternal investment. The triggering cues for spawning in West African synbranchids are not well characterized but are likely linked to rainfall and seasonal flooding, as in Asian relatives.
Breeding
No detailed captive-breeding accounts for Ophisternon afrum have been located, reflecting how rarely this West African species appears in the aquarium trade or in laboratory research. Based on FishBase data indicating male nest or burrow guarding, it appears the species has paternal care of some kind — a trait known in Monopterus among the Synbranchidae, where the male tends eggs and early larvae at a burrow entrance.
In the absence of documented captive spawnings, the practical details of reproduction — clutch size, incubation time, larval stage — remain unknown for this species. Given its Endangered status and restricted range, it is not a species encountered in the mainstream ornamental trade, and hobbyist breeding records are effectively nonexistent.
In the aquarium
Ophisternon afrum is an extreme rarity in the aquarium hobby and should be regarded primarily as a species of scientific and conservation interest rather than as an ornamental fish. It is not commercially traded in meaningful numbers, and any specimen that does appear in the hobby likely represents a by-catch from West African fisheries rather than targeted collection.
For the rare specialist who encounters this fish, the general requirements of synbranchids apply: a soft sand substrate for burrowing, dense cover, warm tropical temperatures, and a completely sealed, escape-proof aquarium — like all swamp eels, O. afrum can breathe air and will exit any gap in a lid. The species can tolerate brackish conditions if needed. It is sensitive to copper-based medications, as is typical of scaleless fish. Given its Endangered status, keeping this species outside of a conservation or research context is difficult to justify, and its export from Guinea-Bissau or Nigeria without appropriate permits would be unlawful.
Conservation
Ophisternon afrum is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List as of 12 September 2019, under criterion B2ab(iii) — meaning that its area of occupancy is estimated to be less than 311 mi², and there is observed decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. This is the most significant conservation finding for the species: its known range is narrow, confined to coastal river systems in Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria, and its wetland habitat is subject to ongoing degradation.
West African coastal lowland freshwater ecosystems face pressure from agricultural conversion, drainage of wetlands, pollution, and altered hydrology, all of which directly threaten the vegetated, slow-water habitats that swamp eels require. Because so little is known about this species' ecology, population size, and tolerance limits, the precautionary Endangered listing reflects genuine concern about its vulnerability to these threats. Research into its distribution, population status, and breeding biology would be a meaningful conservation contribution.
