Taxonomy & naming
Ophisternon bengalense was formally described by the Scottish naturalist and physician John McClelland in 1844. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Ophisternon bengalense McClelland, 1844, a placement confirmed by GBIF's Backbone Taxonomy. The genus Ophisternon belongs to the family Synbranchidae — the swamp eels — within the order Synbranchiformes, which also includes the spiny eels (Mastacembelidae). This placement is the defining fact about the animal: it shares no close kinship with the true eels of the order Anguilliformes, and its eel-like body plan is a convergent solution to the same burrowing, elongate way of life rather than evidence of common ancestry.
The genus Ophisternon is notable for spanning an unusually broad geographic range for a freshwater fish group — members occur in Asia, Africa and the Americas, including some cave-adapted, blind species in the Yucatán. Within Synbranchidae, the genera Amphipnous and Ophichthys (the latter now treated as a homonym of a marine eel genus) have historically been applied to some swamp eels but are considered synonyms or rejected names; Ophisternon stands as the accepted genus for this species under current taxonomy. A Journal of Threatened Taxa survey of Synbranchidae in West Bengal confirmed O. bengalense as a valid, distinct species within the region.
The type locality recorded in FishBase is the Quingua River near Calumpit, Pampanga, in the Philippines, though the species has a wide native range across coastal Asia and Oceania.
Morphology
The Bengal mudeel is an elongate, serpentine fish reaching a maximum total length of about 39.5 in, though most individuals encountered are considerably shorter. The body is nearly cylindrical toward the head and slightly compressed toward the tail, and the skin appears scaleless to the naked eye despite bearing tiny embedded scales beneath a thick coat of mucus. Like other synbranchids, the opercular openings are reduced and the gills are greatly diminished, replaced functionally by a richly vascularised chamber in the pharynx and adjacent tissue that allows the fish to extract oxygen directly from air — an adaptation that accounts for the fish's tolerance of water so anoxic it would suffocate most teleosts.
The most distinctive external feature of Synbranchidae is the single gill opening. In Ophisternon this takes the form of a small, often inconspicuous slit on the underside of the head or throat rather than the paired opercular slits of most bony fish — hence the vernacular names "onegill eel" and "one-gilled eel" recorded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The mouth is terminal, the eyes are small, the fins are greatly reduced to low, continuous ridges along the dorsal and ventral midlines, and there are no pectoral or pelvic fins. Body colouration is typically olive to brownish or greyish, often with a paler underside, providing camouflage in the muddy substrates it favours. Ripe females become noticeably fuller-bodied and rounder in the abdominal region.
Habitat
Ophisternon bengalense is native to freshwater and brackish environments across a vast arc from India and Sri Lanka through Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia (including Sumatra and Borneo), the Philippines, New Guinea and Australia, with records also from Palau. Its natural habitat encompasses muddy, still or slow-moving waters with dense aquatic vegetation: rice paddies, canals, roadside ditches, swamps, lagoons, estuaries and the vegetated backwaters of lowland rivers. It shows a marked preference for thick bottom sediments and soft substrates into which it burrows readily, and it tolerates brackish water at the coastal fringe of its range.
The species is a facultative air-breather and can survive — and even aestivate — in waterlogged mud when surface water disappears seasonally. This tolerance of stagnant, deoxygenated, murky conditions allows it to persist in heavily modified agricultural and peri-urban landscapes where most native fish cannot, and it is commonly encountered in rice-farming areas across South and Southeast Asia. The Aquarium Wiki records water parameters in its preferred habitat as around pH 7.5–7.8 and temperatures of 72–82 °F (71.6–82.4 °F), reflecting the warm, neutral to slightly alkaline conditions of tropical lowland waterways and estuarine margins.
Feeding
The Bengal mudeel is a predatory carnivore that hunts in and along soft substrates, using its sensitive snout to locate prey concealed in mud and leaf litter. Its diet in the wild includes aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, crustaceans — as well as small fish and other animals that live in or near the bottom of shallow, vegetated waters. Like other Synbranchidae, it is primarily a nocturnal or crepuscular hunter, remaining buried by day and becoming active as light levels fall.
In captivity the Bengal mudeel accepts a range of meaty foods offered at night: earthworms, bloodworm, pieces of prawn, and small fish. It is a slow and methodical feeder, and food is best provided after the aquarium lights are off to encourage natural foraging behaviour and reduce competition from more active tankmates. Newly acquired specimens may be reluctant to feed in daylight or when observed, and patience is required during the initial settling-in period.
Mating
Like other swamp eels, Ophisternon bengalense exhibits protogynous hermaphroditism: individuals are typically born or initially mature as females and transition to males with age or size. A Vietnamese reproductive biology study published on ResearchGate found that in wild populations the sex ratio is approximately 58.8% female, 35.6% male and 4.5% in intermediate or transitional states, consistent with protogyny. This hermaphroditism is a common strategy across Synbranchidae and means that a large, old fish is more likely to be male than a small or mid-sized one.
Spawning in the wild is seasonal. The same reproductive study identified peak gonad development in March and April, with the main spawning season in April and again in October — a bimodal pattern that may reflect seasonal rainfall and water-level cycles. Males in at least some synbranchids excavate and guard burrows at the water's edge during the breeding season, and the FishBase entry for O. bengalense notes that males excavate and guard burrows, suggesting a similar guarding role for this species. However, the ResearchGate study notes that the reproductive biology of O. bengalense remains largely unknown and that further research is needed.
Breeding
The female lays eggs in a tunnel excavated in soft substrate, and the male guards the burrow — a pattern documented by FishBase and consistent with the broader synbranchid pattern of male parental guarding in at least some genera. The eggs are relatively few compared with broadcast-spawning fish, and male attendance of the nest during incubation is the principal form of parental care recorded for the species. Beyond this, the reproductive biology of O. bengalense is described by researchers as poorly understood, and detailed accounts of clutch size, incubation period and larval development are not yet available in the scientific literature.
In the home aquarium, breeding has not been reliably reported, and the species is rarely kept in numbers sufficient to form pairs or trigger spawning. Its great potential adult length and the specific substrate and seasonal cues it likely requires mean that captive breeding is an uncommon event. The fish is not catadromous and does not undertake any marine migration — it breeds entirely in fresh water.
In the aquarium
The Bengal mudeel is occasionally kept by specialist aquarists but demands considerable forethought. Its potential maximum length of 39.5 in means that even a mid-sized adult requires a spacious aquarium — an absolute minimum of 59–78.5 in in length — with a deep, fine sand substrate it can burrow into fully, subdued lighting, and many sheltered retreats such as sections of broad pipe, clay pots and driftwood. The tank must be heavily planted or otherwise broken up to reduce exposure stress for a naturally secretive, nocturnal animal.
Like all synbranchids it is scaleless, lacks conventional gill function, and is acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and to rapid changes in water chemistry. It must have access to the water surface to gulp air, but more importantly it is an accomplished escape artist: it can force itself through extraordinarily small gaps, can travel over wet surfaces, and will leave the aquarium and desiccate on the floor unless the lid is completely sealed with no openings larger than a few millimetres. This requirement for a fully secure, air-tight lid is the single most important piece of husbandry information for any prospective keeper.
The Bengal mudeel is a predator and will consume any fish small enough to be swallowed; it should be housed only with species of comparable or larger size and with similar water-quality requirements. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has confirmed the species as introduced and established in North America — likely through the release or escape of aquarium fish — and prospective keepers outside its native range must never release individuals into local waterways. Feeding is best done with live or frozen invertebrates presented at dusk or after lights-out.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Ophisternon bengalense as Least Concern in 2019 (Dahanukar and colleagues), noting that no specific threats to the species as a whole had been identified at that time and that it remains widespread across its extensive native range. Its tolerance of heavily modified agricultural landscapes, brackish estuaries and oxygen-poor conditions gives it a resilience to habitat degradation that many freshwater fish lack, and it is exploited as a food fish across parts of its range without evidence of a population-level decline.
Outside its native range, the species is an established introduced fish in the United States, where it has been detected in the Florida Everglades system — a pathway consistent with the release of aquarium fish. The ecological consequences of its establishment in subtropical North American waterways are under study, and its air-breathing ability, tolerance of a wide range of conditions and predatory habits give it characteristics associated with successful invasive fish. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains a species profile for it as an introduced species.
The Journal of Threatened Taxa has noted the need for continuing taxonomic and conservation-status reviews of Synbranchidae in the Indian subcontinent, including West Bengal. While the species-level assessment is currently LC, local population-level dynamics and the cumulative effects of habitat modification, collection for the food trade and ornamental trade, and water pollution in parts of its range merit ongoing monitoring.
