Taxonomy & naming
Synbranchus lampreia was formally described by Favorito, Zanata and Assumpção in 2005, with the holotype (MZUSP 50184, 39 in TL) collected from the rio Goiapi, a tributary of the rio Arari on Marajó Island, state of Pará, Brazil. The description appeared in Neotropical Ichthyology.
The genus Synbranchus belongs to the family Synbranchidae — the swamp eels — within the order Synbranchiformes. The eel-like body of these fishes evolved independently of the true eels (order Anguilliformes); Synbranchus is more closely related to the spiny eels of Asia (Mastacembelidae) than it is to Anguilla or any marine eel. This convergence on an elongate, limbless form is a recurring theme in burrowing freshwater fishes and should not be taken to imply close kinship with true eels.
Within Synbranchus the species is distinguished from S. marmoratus by a higher vertebral count and from S. madeira by a shorter post-anal length. The epithet lampreia is the Portuguese word for lamprey, applied by the describers in reference to the species' superficially lamprey-like appearance — though it is no more a lamprey than it is a true eel.
Morphology
Adults reach 27.5–46 in total length, with the holotype at 39 in; FishBase records a substantially lower maximum (15 in), possibly reflecting incomplete growth data from limited specimens. Body depth is 5.3–5.7% of total length — extremely slender even by swamp-eel standards. The body is scaleless to the eye, serpentine, and laterally compressed toward the tail, lacking paired fins entirely; the dorsal, caudal and anal fins are reduced to a continuous low fold.
The colour pattern is the diagnostic feature: large, rounded, well-defined black blotches on a light brown to yellowish ground colour, resembling the saddle-spots of a lamprey when seen from above. This arrangement distinguishes it at a glance from the irregular marbled network of S. marmoratus. The eyes are small; as in other synbranchids the gill opening is a single narrow slit on the underside of the head, a structure consistent with life in oxygen-poor, still water.
Habitat
Synbranchus lampreia is known only from the rio Goiapi and its tributaries on Marajó Island, Pará, Brazil — a low-lying white-water (várzea) system approximately 37 mi southeast of the mouth of the Amazon. The island experiences extreme seasonal flooding, with roughly 70% of its area inundated during the wet season (December–June), and the river supports a community of animals adapted to fluctuating oxygen levels and seasonally isolated pools.
As a facultative air-breather, S. lampreia can access atmospheric oxygen through its modified gill chamber, allowing it to persist in the poorly oxygenated, warm, slow-moving water typical of tropical floodplain systems. Like other Synbranchus it is likely a burrower in soft substrate along river margins, sheltering in the mud and leaf-litter of flooded banks and forest edge. The type locality coordinates are approximately 0°58'S 48°57'W at Cachoeira do Arari.
Feeding
Synbranchus lampreia is a carnivore of the substrate. Documented prey items include insects and insect larvae, earthworms, crustaceans, snails, small fishes, and frogs — a broad diet typical of large, opportunistic swamp-eel predators. It is an ambush hunter, likely spending daylight hours concealed in burrows or sediment and emerging after dark to forage.
The down-turned mouth and slender, flexible body are well suited to pursuing prey in tight spaces among roots, leaf litter and muddy banks. Its large adult size means it can take proportionally substantial prey, and frogs are a plausible dry-season food source in a system where aquatic and terrestrial animals concentrate around shrinking pools.
Mating
Synbranchus lampreia is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine spawning migration; breeding occurs entirely in fresh water. Spawning is seasonal, tied to the extreme wet-dry cycle of Marajó Island. The original description notes that nests are placed in dry areas roughly two metres from the river margin and two metres above the waterline — a striking terrestrial nesting strategy likely linked to the species avoiding nest inundation during wet-season flood peaks.
The genus Synbranchus, like other synbranchids, exhibits complex hermaphroditism. S. marmoratus is documented as a protogynous hermaphrodite (individuals begin reproductive life as females, with larger and older fish switching to functional males), and the same developmental sequence is plausible for S. lampreia, though this has not been independently confirmed for the species. The shift in sex with size may explain why nest-guarding adults — the documented role in this species — tend to be large individuals.
Breeding
The original description documents seasonal spawning with a small clutch of large eggs and low fecundity, consistent with a species investing heavily in each reproductive event. Males have been observed guarding nests containing eggs and larvae — genuine parental care unusual among swamp eels outside the closely related genus Monopterus, where bubble-nest guarding is well established. In S. lampreia, nests are located terrestrially (on dry ground well above the waterline), an adaptation that may protect eggs from aquatic predators and hypoxic conditions during the dry season, when water recedes.
Fecundity data are limited to the material in the original description and no captive breeding has been reported. The combination of large adult size, narrow endemic range, seasonal habitat dynamics, and apparent reliance on precise nesting conditions around the flood-recession margin makes controlled reproduction in an aquarium essentially undocumented.
In the aquarium
Synbranchus lampreia is not an aquarium fish in any meaningful sense. It is a narrow endemic known from a single river system, has never been commercially collected for the trade, and reaches close to a metre in length. Its biology demands warm, soft, oxygen-poor water with a deep soft substrate for burrowing, ample cover, and a securely sealed tank — swamp eels are accomplished escape artists, capable of climbing and breathing air, and any gap in a lid is a death risk.
For the rare specialist who encounters one or studies the group, the care principles of other large Synbranchus apply: maintain warm tropical temperatures (75–82 °F), soft to slightly acid water, low current, and live or meaty foods offered after dark. Copper-based medications must be avoided, as this scaleless fish is highly sensitive. The practical message is the same as for all narrow-range Amazonian endemics: wild collection pressure on a single-river species is disproportionately damaging, and hobbyist demand should not drive it.
Conservation
Synbranchus lampreia was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2020. The Least Concern designation reflects the absence of confirmed population decline data rather than an absence of risk; the species is a narrow endemic known only from the rio Goiapi drainage on Marajó Island, and its known range is smaller than that of many formally threatened freshwater fishes. Limited sampling may conceal its true extent or vulnerability.
Marajó Island sits within the Brazilian Amazon and the rio Goiapi is subject to the same regional pressures affecting várzea systems broadly: agricultural conversion of floodplain forest, cattle ranching (Marajó is a major ranching region), and hydrological alteration of seasonal flood cycles. A specialist that nests terrestrially at precise positions relative to the water margin could be disproportionately sensitive to changes in seasonal inundation regimes driven by climate change or land clearance. Conservation data on this species remain sparse, and the IUCN assessment would benefit from updated field surveys.
