Synbranchus madeirae was described by Rosen and Rumney in 1972, with the type locality in the Rio Madeira drainage of Brazil. It belongs to the family Synbranchidae — the swamp eels — within the order Synbranchiformes. This placement is the most important fact about the animal: Synbranchiformes is the order that also contains the spiny eels (Mastacembelidae), and neither family is related to the true eels of the order Anguilliformes. The sinuous, elongate body of Synbranchus is convergent on the true-eel form, an adaptation to a burrowing benthic life rather than a mark of shared ancestry.
The genus Synbranchus is a New World genus of roughly thirteen described species distributed from Mexico to Argentina, making it the primary swamp-eel genus of the Americas. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the governing authority for valid names) records S. madeirae as a valid species within Synbranchus. No synonyms or subsequent combinations are documented in the literature captured here. The species epithet madeirae is a genitive of Madeira, referring to the Rio Madeira, an Amazon tributary that forms the type locality and core of the known range.
Morphology
Synbranchus madeirae shares the family's characteristic body plan: greatly elongate, roughly cylindrical toward the front and compressed toward the tail, and scaleless to casual inspection — the skin is smooth and heavily mucus-coated, which aids movement through confined burrows and dense vegetation. The paired fins are absent or vestigial, as in all synbranchids, and locomotion is entirely serpentine. There is no distinct division between dorsal, caudal, and anal fins; the low fin-fold runs continuously around the tail.
The gill apparatus is reduced; the branchial chamber functions partly as an accessory air-breathing organ, and fish can be observed surfacing to gulp air in poorly oxygenated water. The species buries itself in soft sediment or hides in dense root mats, leaf litter, and detritus, emerging mostly at night to forage. In the dry season, when water bodies shrink or disappear, synbranchids can aestivate in moist mud for extended periods, breathing air through the skin and buccal chamber. Whether S. madeirae follows the same pattern is not formally documented in the literature available here, but the conservative assumption given genus-level consistency is that similar plasticity applies.
No observations of courtship behaviour in S. madeirae are recorded in the reviewed sources. In synbranchids generally, mating is thought to occur in or near burrows in soft substrate, with the transition from female to male function mediated by social and environmental cues. This is very different from the long oceanic spawning migration of true eels, and from the bubble-nest guarding of the Asian swamp eel Monopterus albus; S. madeirae is an American Synbranchus and does not build bubble nests.

General care principles for the genus apply: a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate deep enough for burrowing, stagnant to very slow-moving water, dim lighting, meaty live or frozen foods offered at night, and a wide range of oxygen conditions the fish can manage by surfacing to breathe air.
All swamp eels share the escape-artist traits of the synbranchiform order: they can climb moist surfaces, squeeze through astonishingly narrow gaps, and survive extended periods out of water by breathing atmospheric air. A fully sealed, weighted lid is essential. The fish is scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications. Tank size should be scaled to adult length — in the range of 12–15.5 in for this species — with the understanding that the animal will spend most of its time buried. It is unsuitable as a community fish and would likely consume anything it can swallow.
Conservation
Synbranchus madeirae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Most members of the genus Synbranchus lack formal conservation assessment, reflecting both their cryptic habits and the relatively limited ichthyological survey effort in lowland Amazonian swamps and floodplain habitats compared to mainstem river systems.
The Rio Madeira drainage is subject to significant hydrological pressure: the Santo Antônio and Jirau hydroelectric dams on the Madeira mainstream and its tributaries have substantially altered floodplain connectivity, water regimes, and sediment transport in the region. Whether these pressures affect S. madeirae specifically is unknown; the species' capacity for aestivation and air-breathing may confer some resilience, but the fragmentation of seasonal wetlands and swamp habitats represents a plausible threat to a species dependent on such environments.
