Labeotropheus

Labeotropheus is a small genus of rock-dwelling haplochromine cichlids — "mbuna" — endemic to Lake Malawi, instantly recognizable by a fleshy, downturned snout that overhangs the mouth like a hawk's beak. That single feature is the genus's whole story: it is a purpose-built tool for scraping the film of algae and invertebrates (aufwuchs) off the lake's rocks at an angle no other mbuna can match. Long treated as just two species, the genus has been quietly exploded by recent taxonomy, with six new species described by Pauers and colleagues in 2023, so a clade that hobbyists still call "the two Labs" now holds roughly eleven named forms plus undescribed ones.

Taxonomy & the radiation

Labeotropheus was erected by the German ichthyologist Ernst Ahl in 1926, with Labeotropheus fuelleborni Ahl, 1926 as the type species; the genus name couples Latin labeo ("one with thick lips") with a Greek root, while the species epithet honors the German physician-parasitologist Friedrich Fülleborn, who collected early Malawi material (Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, genus 6798; FishBase). The genus sits in family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, within the haplochromine tribe Haplochromini, and is one of the classic rock-dwelling "mbuna" lineages of the Lake Malawi species flock — a radiation now estimated at 1,000+ endemic cichlid species (Sayer et al., 2019, cited in Pauers et al., 2023).

For most of the 20th century only two species were recognized — L. fuelleborni and the slender L. trewavasae Fryer, 1956 — and Ribbink et al.'s landmark 1983 revision (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society) treated the genus on that two-species footing while documenting enormous geographic color variation. That apparent simplicity has since collapsed. Michael Pauers and co-workers split out additional species (L. artatorostris, L. chlorosiglos, L. simoneae) over the 2010s, and then Pauers and Phiri described six more new species in 2023 — including L. alticodia, L. chirangali, and L. rubidorsalis — in Ichthyology & Herpetology (111(2):e2021055), raising the total to roughly eleven. The diagnoses lean heavily on body depth, rostral and jaw proportions, and male nuptial color, the same axes along which the genus has repeatedly diverged across the lake (Pauers, 2011, Int. J. Evol. Biol.).

Defining features

The genus's signature is the snout: a thick, fleshy rostral pad that hangs down over a ventrally placed (subterminal to inferior) mouth, with the lower jaw tucked underneath. This "hooked nose" lets the fish hold its body nearly parallel to a rock face and rake aufwuchs with its teeth at a very shallow attack angle — an arrangement unique among Malawi mbuna and the easiest way to tell a Labeotropheus from any look-alike (Konings; FishBase; the feeding-angle study by Stauffer & Posner, 2006, found L. trewavasae fed at the smallest angle to the substrate of the species tested).

The genus spans a real range of body forms. L. fuelleborni is the robust, deep-bodied end — stocky, blunt, commonly 4–6 in (4–6 in) in aquaria, with FishBase citing a maximum near 12 in (12 in) SL that wild-caught fish rarely approach. L. trewavasae is the slender counterpart, typically 3.5–4.5 in (3.5–4.5 in), more elongate and built to work under-surfaces and crevices. The 2023 descriptions formalize this robust-versus-slender split: L. alticodia, for instance, is diagnosed partly on a markedly greater body depth (about 37–41% of standard length) than the slender L. trewavasae (roughly 26–33%). Against other mbuna genera, the overhanging snout is diagnostic — Tropheops and Pseudotropheus have terminal or only weakly subterminal mouths and graze at steeper angles, and none carry the distinctive rostral pad.

Range & habitat

Labeotropheus is endemic to Lake Malawi (also called Lake Nyasa/Niassa), the southernmost of the Great Rift lakes. Like other mbuna it is tied to the rocky littoral, and most species are sharply localized to particular shorelines, reefs, or island groups — a pattern of micro-endemism that drives the genus's diversity. L. fuelleborni is the broad exception, distributed widely around the lake including offshore islands (FishBase), whereas several of the newly described forms are pinpoint endemics: L. chlorosiglos and L. simoneae are tied to the Katale Island area, and L. alticodia appears restricted to the Maleri Islands (Pauers et al., 2023).

The biotope is shallow, sunlit, wave-washed rock and the rubble-and-rock transition zone, where algal growth is richest; the genus largely avoids open sand and deep water. FishBase puts L. fuelleborni in a depth band of roughly 3–20 ft (3–20 ft). In-situ water chemistry is hard, alkaline, and stable — pH about 7.5–8.5, moderate hardness, and surface temperatures near 72–77 °F (72–77 °F) in the upper mixed layer the fish occupy. That chemical and thermal constancy is exactly why captive Labeotropheus demand hard, basic, warm water rather than the soft conditions many tropical fish prefer.

Ecology & diet

The entire genus is built around grazing aufwuchs — the carpet of filamentous algae, diatoms, and the small invertebrates living within it that coats Malawi's rocks. Stomach analyses place L. fuelleborni at a low trophic level (about 2.8 on FishBase), confirming a predominantly herbivorous, algae-dominated diet, though the fish also ingest the worms, micro-crustaceans, and insect larvae caught up in the algal mat. The hooked snout and shallow feeding angle are the trophic adaptation that defines the clade (Stauffer & Posner, 2006).

Where the genus genuinely diverges is in microhabitat partitioning, documented in Ribbink et al.'s 1983 ecological work: L. fuelleborni feeds mainly off the exposed upper surfaces of rocks, while L. trewavasae, slimmer and with a more strongly inferior mouth, specializes on the shaded under-surfaces and crevices. This lets the two coexist on the same reef without competing head-to-head — a textbook case of resource partitioning. FishBase also notes a striking behavioral wrinkle: although Labeotropheus usually graze alone or in loose mixed groups, they will occasionally mass into feeding schools of hundreds of fish that overrun and strip the defended algal gardens of territorial neighbors, a numbers-game tactic for breaching other species' turf.

Behaviour & breeding

Like all Malawi mbuna, every Labeotropheus species is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no pair bond and no substrate nest. Males hold and defend feeding-and-spawning territories on the rocks, court passing females with intense color and quivering displays, and after spawning the female alone takes the eggs into her buccal cavity. Fertilization typically follows the classic haplochromine "egg-spot" routine — the female snaps at egg-like ocelli on the male's anal fin and takes in milt. She broods the clutch for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming, well-developed fry, investing no further care once they are out (FishBase; aquarium husbandry accounts for L. trewavasae cite about 21 days of brooding).

Male nuptial coloration is the genus's evolutionary engine, not just decoration. Pauers (2011, "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish... Labeotropheus", Int. J. Evol. Biol.) and the parallel-radiations work it summarizes showed that the same color polymorphisms — blue versus orange/red morphs, including the famous "OB" (orange-blotch) females — have arisen repeatedly in isolated populations around the lake, with divergent female mate preference helping drive speciation. Temperament is squarely mbuna: males are highly territorial and aggressive toward conspecific and similarly-shaped rivals, and breeding is triggered less by seasonality than by warmth, good feeding, and a male holding a defensible cave or ledge.

In the aquarium

Labeotropheus are durable, brilliantly colored, and genuinely hardy, but they are not beginner community fish — they are full-blooded mbuna with the aggression to match. A single male with a harem of four or more females needs real footprint: a 48 in / 75-gallon tank (≈75 US gal) is a sensible practical minimum, and bigger is better for spreading aggression. The build is hard, alkaline water (pH ~7.8–8.6), temperatures of about 76–82 °F (75–82 °F), and a wall of rockwork that breaks lines of sight; lean, herbivore-appropriate feeding (spirulina/algae-based foods, vegetables) over protein-heavy fare. L. fuelleborni is the more forgiving, frequently bred "entry" species within the genus; L. trewavasae is a notch more demanding and is generally a fish for keepers who already understand mbuna.

The predictable mistakes are worth naming. First, overfeeding rich protein (bloodworms, beef heart) to an animal evolved to rasp algae invites the chronic digestive trouble hobbyists call "Malawi bloat" — the Malawi analogue to the bloat that plagues Tropheus keepers. Second, hybridization: do not mix Labeotropheus species or color morphs in one tank, and be wary of crossing them with other deep-bodied mbuna, because these fish interbreed readily and the literature documents repeated natural hybridization (Pauers, 2011). Third, the classic error of too few fish — sparse stocking lets a dominant male single out and kill tankmates, so keepers deliberately crowd and skew sex ratios female. Done honestly, a species-tank or carefully chosen mbuna community of Labeotropheus is rewarding; done casually, it produces stress, mongrel fry, and dead fish.

Conservation

Labeotropheus is entirely endemic to Lake Malawi, so its fate is bound to that one lake. The two long-recognized, wide-ranging species are assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern — L. fuelleborni was evaluated LC on 22 June 2018 (IUCN 60937), and L. trewavasae is likewise LC — reflecting broad distribution and stable populations rather than freedom from risk. The catch is that most of the recently described species are narrow-range endemics tied to a single reef or island group and have not been formally assessed at all; the authors of the 2023 revision explicitly framed naming these forms as a step toward conserving them, since unnamed micro-endemics are effectively invisible to management. There is also steady aquarium-trade collection from a handful of accessible sites, though it is a smaller pressure than the lake-wide threats.

Those lake-level pressures are the real concern. Lake Malawi is strained by heavy artisanal over-fishing — most visibly the collapse of the chambo (Oreochromis) tilapia fishery — and by sediment and nutrient loading washing off deforested catchments, which smothers the very rocky aufwuchs habitat Labeotropheus depends on. Climate change compounds this: roughly +33 °F of warming in the shallow surface layer has strengthened thermal stratification, weakened the deep mixing that returns nutrients to surface waters, and is cutting lake productivity, while invasive-species introductions add further risk (Chavula et al., 2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research 49(6):102241). The honest summary: the species that have been assessed are Least Concern, but they live in an increasingly stressed lake, and the genus's many localized endemics are data-poor enough that "not threatened" cannot yet be said of Labeotropheus as a whole.
