Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Labeotropheus alticodia is a deep-bodied, powder-blue scrapermouth mbuna from the Maleri Island group in the southern arm of Lake Malawi, named for the unusually tall head that separates it from its neighbours. It is one of six Labeotropheus species formally split out by Titus Phiri and Michael Pauers in 2023, part of a wave of descriptions that pulled the genus apart from its two long-standing 'species' into a flock of geographically isolated island forms diagnosed chiefly by male breeding colour.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeotropheus alticodia was described by Titus B. Phiri and Michael J. Pauers in 2023, in their monograph 'Six New Species of Labeotropheus (Cichliformes: Cichlidae) from the Malaŵian Shore of Lake Malaŵi, Africa' (Ichthyology & Herpetology 111(2):264–292). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase (species 70095) both list it as valid in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, tribe Haplochromini.

For most of the twentieth century the genus Labeotropheus held just two nominal species, Ahl's Labeotropheus fuelleborni (1927) and Trewavas's Labeotropheus trewavasae (1935). Pauers and colleagues argued that this drastically undercounted the real diversity: across the lake, isolated rocky reefs each carry their own Labeotropheus population, and the males of those populations differ consistently in nuptial colour and in fine body proportions. Labeotropheus alticodia is one product of that reasoning. The epithet is built from Latin altus, 'tall,' and Greek kodia, 'head' — a direct reference to the deep head that the authors found diagnostic for the Maleri form. It is a robust, deep-bodied member of the genus, and as a very recent split it has no established common name in the trade.

Morphology

Like all Labeotropheus, Labeotropheus alticodia carries the genus's signature: a thick, fleshy snout pad of fibrous connective tissue that overhangs an inferior, subterminal mouth — an arrangement that lets the fish hold its body nearly parallel to the rock while it rasps algae. It is a robust morphotype, with body depth measured at roughly 37–41% of standard length, and it is the head depth in particular that gives the species its name.

FishBase records a maximum of about 3.5 in standard length (the holotype is near 3 in SL), so this is a fairly small mbuna of perhaps 4.5–5 in in total length once the tail is included. Breeding males are pale powder-blue over the body, with whitish-blue dorsal and caudal fins edged in yellow at their trailing margins, a pale yellow-orange anal fin, and pale yellow-orange pelvic fins tipped with white leading edges. Females are a plainer light grey on the head and body, the scales flecked with orange spots, with a white throat and an orange-tipped dorsal fin — the muted, cryptic pattern typical of female mbuna.

Habitat

Labeotropheus alticodia is a Lake Malawi endemic, and within the lake it is narrowly distributed: the describing authors restrict it to the Maleri and Nankoma Islands in the southern part of the lake, inside Lake Malawi National Park. The type locality is Maleri Island (about 13.909° S, 34.626° E). This is the kind of pinpoint, single-island range that characterises most of the newly split Labeotropheus and explains why so many forms could hide inside two old names.

The habitat is the classic mbuna biotope — the rocky, algae-covered shoreline and island slopes of the lake, where wave action and strong light feed a dense carpet of filamentous algae over the boulders. Like all Malawi rock-dwellers it lives in hard, alkaline water: pH roughly 7.7–8.8 and temperatures around 75–82 °F, the famous Rift-lake chemistry. Robust, deep-bodied Labeotropheus of this kind are generally associated with the turbulent, well-oxygenated shallows rather than deep water.

Feeding

This is an algae-scraping grazer, and the entire genus is built around that single job. The fleshy overhanging snout and the inferior, subterminal mouth let Labeotropheus alticodia press its jaws flat against the rock and rasp the tough, fibrous 'Aufwuchs' — the felt of filamentous algae and the tiny invertebrates living within it — while keeping its body almost horizontal to the substrate. This is a more specialised browsing posture than most mbuna manage, and it is the functional reason the genus exists as a distinct lineage.

No feeding study specific to Labeotropheus alticodia has been published; its diet is inferred from its anatomy and from the well-documented ecology of the genus. In the aquarium it should be treated as a committed herbivore: a vegetable-based mbuna diet, spirulina-rich foods and grazing surfaces, with protein-heavy foods kept to a minimum to avoid the bloat that herbivorous Malawi cichlids are prone to.

Mating

As in essentially all Lake Malawi mbuna, Labeotropheus alticodia is a polygynous, non-pair-forming species. A dominant male holds a territory on the rocks, intensifies into his powder-blue breeding dress, and courts any ripe female that passes, while subordinate males and females keep the duller grey pattern. The whole taxonomy of the new Labeotropheus rests on exactly this: it is the male's nuptial colour, defended over a home reef, that most reliably tells one island form from the next.

Direct courtship observations for this particular species have not been published, but there is no reason to expect it departs from the mbuna norm — a quivering lateral display by the male, the female led to a cleared spot on the rock, and spawning conducted entirely without a lasting pair bond. Males are territorial and intolerant of rivals.

Breeding

Labeotropheus alticodia is a maternal mouthbrooder, like all Labeotropheus and the great majority of Malawi haplochromines. The female lays a small clutch of eggs, takes them immediately into her mouth, and — drawn by the egg-spot dummies on the male's anal fin — collects his milt to fertilise the brood she is already carrying. The male takes no further part once spawning ends.

No brood counts or incubation times have been published specifically for this newly described species. By the pattern of similar small Labeotropheus, a female would be expected to carry a modest clutch for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, brooding without feeding throughout. The fry are large and fully formed at release and begin grazing almost at once. These are honest gaps in the record rather than settled facts: the species is so recently named that its captive reproduction has not been formally documented.

In the aquarium

Labeotropheus alticodia is, for now, a rarely seen fish in the hobby — a brand-new scientific name attached to a single-island population, and most aquarium 'Labeotropheus' continue to be sold under the old fuelleborni and trewavasae labels or by collecting locality. Where it does appear, it should be kept exactly as other robust Labeotropheus are: in a spacious, rock-built Malawi tank with hard, alkaline water (pH comfortably above 7.7), temperatures around 75–82 °F, and a sandy floor beneath piled rockwork that breaks lines of sight.

Like its relatives it is a vigorous, territorial mbuna best kept with other robust Malawi rock-dwellers and with enough females to spread male aggression. It is a dedicated grazer, so a vegetable-based diet is essential and high-protein foods invite digestive trouble. One important caution that applies to the whole genus: Labeotropheus hybridise readily in captivity, and because the new species are diagnosed largely on male colour, mixing island forms or other mbuna risks producing fish of no scientific or conservation value. Keep a single species, ideally of known wild provenance, if the goal is to maintain it true.

Conservation

Labeotropheus alticodia has not yet been assessed by the IUCN Red List — unsurprising for a species described only in 2023 — so it carries no formal conservation status at this time. That silence should not be read as security. As a narrow-range endemic apparently confined to the Maleri and Nankoma Islands, it is exactly the kind of single-locality fish that is most exposed to localised pressures, even though those particular islands lie within Lake Malawi National Park.

The broader context is the same one that hangs over every Malawi rock-dweller. The Chavula et al. (2023) review of the Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa basin documents over-fishing, heavy sediment and nutrient loading from deforested catchments, measurable warming of the surface layer, and a rising risk from invasive species. Sedimentation is the specific danger for an algae-grazing mbuna: silt smothers the rock surfaces and the algal film the fish depends on. The most honest assessment is that Labeotropheus alticodia is currently unassessed and very narrowly distributed, which is a combination that warrants caution rather than complacency.
