Taxonomy & naming
Brachygobius nunus was first described by the Scottish physician and naturalist Francis Hamilton in 1822 from material collected in the rivers and estuaries of Bengal, originally placed in the genus Gobius — the catch-all for nearly every goby known at the time. The genus Brachygobius was erected later to hold the small, banded Indo-Pacific bumblebee gobies, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Brachygobius nunus as its valid name. WoRMS (World Register of Marine Species) likewise confirms (Hamilton, 1822) as the authority. Within the broader Gobioidei, the family Gobiidae is the true gobies, distinguished from the sleeper gobies (Eleotridae) and gudgeons by the fusion of the pelvic fins into the characteristic cup-like sucker disc.
The bumblebee gobies have a tangled taxonomic history. Several species — including B. xanthozonus, B. doriae, B. sabanus and B. nunus — are frequently confused in the trade and in older literature, and fish sold as one species are often another. Four dark body bars crossing a yellow-orange ground colour are the hallmark of the group, but the exact width, spacing and intensity of those bars differs among species. Brachygobius nunus was one of the first described, and its authority from the rivers of Bengal gives it the widest documented range in the genus.
Morphology
Brachygobius nunus is a very small goby, reaching a maximum of about 1 in standard length (SL) per FishBase — aquarist sources suggest some specimens reach 1–1.5 in total length, so adults are firmly nano fish. The body is compact, slightly rounded in cross-section, with a large, blunt head and broad pectoral fins that anchor the fish on hard surfaces. The defining character of true gobies is immediately apparent: the paired pelvic fins are fully fused along the midline to form a fleshy, cup-like sucker disc on the ventral surface, which the fish uses to cling to rocks, roots and substrate in tidal currents.
Colouration is the species' most striking feature: four dark chocolate-brown to black bars cross a bright yellow to orange-gold body, giving the fish its bumblebee pattern. Fins are mostly translucent to pale yellowish. Precise bar width and the intensity of the ground colour vary with mood and condition — alarmed or stressed fish pale noticeably. Sexes are similar at rest, but ripe females are noticeably rounder in the belly and may be slightly more full-bodied overall; males can show more intense colouration when guarding a nest.
Habitat
Brachygobius nunus is a coastal estuarine species, native to the saltwater swamps, mangrove channels, tidal streams and stream estuaries from India eastward through Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Borneo (FishBase). It is an intertidal and low-salinity habitat specialist, living in the zone where rivers meet the sea — among mangrove roots, in tidal creeks, and in coastal swamp margins rather than in open freshwater rivers.
Water conditions are brackish: the species is adapted to the fluctuating salinity, warm temperatures and moderate-to-high pH of estuarine environments. Aquarist records suggest temperatures of 75–86 °F, pH 7.5–8.5, and a specific gravity of around 1.005–1.010 (roughly 2 teaspoons of marine salt mix per gallon). While some individuals or populations may persist in near-freshwater conditions, keeping the species long-term in plain, soft, acidic water tends to result in decline. The estuarine habitat is rich in fine sediment, decaying leaf litter among mangrove roots, and dense tidal current variation.
Feeding
Brachygobius nunus is a micro-predator. In the wild it hunts small invertebrates — copepods, small crustaceans, worm-like insect larvae, and similar prey — in and around mangrove root systems and estuarine mud. It is a visual stalker that waits and then lunges at close range rather than an active open-water hunter.
In the aquarium, this translates to a strong preference for live and frozen meaty foods and a typical refusal of dry flake. Brine shrimp (live or frozen), daphnia, bloodworm, white worms and similarly sized invertebrates are the staple; micro-pellets or slow-sinking granules may eventually be taken but cannot reliably substitute for frozen or live food. A bumblebee goby kept on flake alone will typically lose weight and colour and will not condition for breeding. Feeding frequency of two or three small meals daily is appropriate given the tiny stomach capacity.
Mating
Brachygobius nunus is a resident cave-spawning goby. The whole breeding cycle occurs in brackish or near-fresh water — the species does not have an amphidromous larval stage that must develop at sea — which is what makes captive breeding possible. In a mature aquarium with suitable spawning sites a dominant male will select and defend a cave: a small ceramic pot, a short length of PVC pipe, a coconut-shell half or any snug crevice with a firm ceiling.
Courtship is driven by the male, who takes up residence in the chosen cave and displays to passing females by intensifying his colouration and making short sallies toward them. Females that are ripe — visibly rounded with eggs — are led into the cave to spawn. The male will exclude rival males and even unresponsive females from the immediate area of the cave, and aggression between males over choice sites can be fierce in a small tank. Providing at least one cave per male and enough visual breaks reduces fighting.
Breeding
Once a pair has formed, the female enters the cave and deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of the chamber; she may then be driven out by the male, who takes sole responsibility for the nest. He guards it closely, fanning the eggs with his pectoral and caudal fins to maintain oxygenation, and he chases away any fish that approaches. Eggs hatch in approximately 3–4 days at typical aquarium temperatures.
The newly hatched fry are tiny and require microscopic first foods — vinegar eels, infusoria or very fine rotifers — for the first days of life, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) as they grow. Because the whole cycle is in brackish water, raising fry requires maintaining the appropriate salinity throughout. Many breeders transfer the egg-laden cave to a separate, pre-salted rearing tank once spawning has occurred, to protect the clutch from other tank inhabitants and to make fry feeding easier. With patience and live foods, Brachygobius nunus can be bred successfully in the home aquarium.
In the aquarium
Brachygobius nunus is a nano-aquarium specialist with specific needs that separate it from the average community tank. The non-negotiable requirement is brackish water: a specific gravity of approximately 1.005–1.010 (marine salt mix, not aquarium tonic salt), with temperatures of 75–86 °F and pH 7.5–8.5. The tank must be tightly covered — gobies in general are confirmed jumpers, and this species is no exception. A small aquarium of 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a small group of three to five fish, with the substrate of sand or fine gravel and several caves or hollow ornaments providing territorial anchors.
Compatible tankmates must be brackish-tolerant and small enough not to bully or eat the gobies; figure-of-eight puffers, knight gobies and mollies are often cited neighbours, though the puffers may fin-nip. Single-species or species-only bumblebee goby tanks are also popular. Diet is the other major demand: live and frozen foods at every meal, since this species reliably ignores dry flake. Males are territorial toward one another and will fight over caves, so providing as many hiding places as fish — plus a few spare — reduces stress injuries. Once brackish water, live food and covered tank are secured, Brachygobius nunus is a long-lived, fascinating fish with a rewarding potential for breeding.
Conservation
Brachygobius nunus has not been formally evaluated on the IUCN Red List; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). The species is widespread across coastal South and Southeast Asia — India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Borneo — and the breadth of that range suggests it is not immediately threatened at the global level. However, it is a specialist of coastal mangrove and estuarine habitats, which are among the most heavily degraded ecosystems in the region. Mangrove clearance for aquaculture, coastal development, pollution from agricultural runoff and tidal channel modification all affect the specific niches this fish occupies.
The aquarium trade draws on wild-caught individuals, given that the bumblebee goby is not mass-produced at the scale of livebearers or cichlids. Captive-bred specimens are available from specialist breeders and are preferable wherever the source can be verified. A formal IUCN assessment would help clarify the true conservation picture, particularly at a regional and national level where local habitat pressures may be considerably more acute than the wide range would suggest.
