Periophthalmus novemradiatus, the small mudskipper, is one of the most consistently terrestrial fish on the planet. A true goby — family Oxudercidae, subfamily Oxudercinae — it carries the fused pelvic sucker disc of the gobies and has pushed that amphibious tendency to an extreme: it spends the majority of its life hauled out on mudflats and mangrove roots, breathing through a moist gill chamber and using its muscular pectoral fins to crutch across the mud, climbing, leaping and burrowing with an ease that makes it look comically un-fishlike. Native to the brackish estuaries and mangrove forests of the Indo-West Pacific, from the Indian subcontinent through Southeast Asia to Indonesia, it is among the smallest of the mudskippers, reaching roughly 1.5–3 in, and is an occasional guest in specialist brackish paludaria. It is not a fish for a conventional aquarium, and it cannot be bred there in any practical sense.

Taxonomy & naming

Periophthalmus novemradiatus was described by Francis Buchanan-Hamilton in 1822, one of many freshwater and estuarine fishes from the Indian subcontinent that he treated in his landmark work on the fishes of the Ganges. The species epithet novemradiatus — from the Latin novem, nine, and radius, a ray or spoke — refers to the count of fin rays in one of its dorsal fins, a character Hamilton used to distinguish it from its congeners.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places Periophthalmus in the family Oxudercidae, within the subfamily Oxudercinae — the amphibious mudskippers. This family sits within the wider goby order Gobiiformes, alongside the true gobies (Gobiidae) and the sleepers (Eleotridae), but the oxuderces represent a distinct, heavily specialised lineage. The gobies as a whole are an overwhelmingly marine group; the brackish and estuarine mudskippers are part of a narrow exception within Oxudercidae, and their presence in an atlas of aquarium fishes reflects the persistent hobbyist interest in these peculiar, largely terrestrial animals.

The genus Periophthalmus is large and widespread, ranging from the West African Atlantic coast (represented by P. barbarus) through the Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, India, and across the Indo-Pacific to the western Pacific islands. P. novemradiatus is one of the smaller species and is concentrated in South and Southeast Asian estuaries.

Morphology

Like all mudskippers, Periophthalmus novemradiatus is built for life out of water rather than in it. The body is elongate and slightly compressed, tapering to a pointed tail, and the large, mobile, independently rotating eyes sit high and forward on the head — a mudskipper can retract them into moist sockets to prevent desiccation and has a visual field that covers both forward and upward. The fish breathes through a moist, chamber-sealed gill cavity that it uses as an air-lung on land, rolling briefly back into water or its burrow to re-wet the chamber.

The pectoral fins are thick and muscular, almost limb-like, and are used to prop the fish upright and to crutch across the mud in the characteristic skip-and-lunge gait that gives the group its name. The pelvic fins are fused into a flat sucker disc — the defining character of all true gobies — which this species uses to anchor itself to sloped mud banks and mangrove roots. Colouration is broadly grey-brown with faint mottling and dark markings that offer camouflage against the mud; the first dorsal fin, a tall and flag-like structure that can be raised and displayed during territorial and courtship encounters, shows some darker pigment along its margin.

Adult size is small by mudskipper standards: most sources and aquarium records place P. novemradiatus in the 1.5–3 in standard length range, making it one of the more manageable species for specialist keeping.

Habitat

Periophthalmus novemradiatus inhabits the intertidal zone of tropical and subtropical estuaries, mangrove forests, and brackish mudflats across the Indo-West Pacific. It is found along the coasts and tidal creeks of India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka and extends through the Malay Peninsula, Thailand, Indonesia, and the surrounding archipelagos. Its habitat is defined by the tide: at low water it is active on exposed mud, feeding, defending territory and performing aerial displays; as the tide rises it retreats to its burrow or to higher ground on mangrove roots and pneumatophores.

The water it occupies — when it is in water at all — is brackish, typically shallow, warm, and rich in organic matter and detritus. Salinity varies with tidal cycle and season, generally between 5 and 20 ppt, and temperatures range from around 68–82 °F across its range. The species is tolerant of the wide salinity and oxygen fluctuations typical of mangrove environments but is not a freshwater fish and is physiologically tied to brackish estuaries.

Because it spends most of its life on land, the aerial environment matters as much as the aquatic one: the fish requires warm air, high humidity and firm, workable mud or sand substrate for burrowing, without which it cannot rest or reproduce.

Feeding

Periophthalmus novemradiatus is a micro-predator, hunting live prey on the mud surface and in the water column at the edge of its territory. Its diet consists primarily of small crustaceans (copepods, amphipods, small shrimp), insect larvae and other small invertebrates encountered on and in the mudflat substrate. The mobile, wide-field eyes are adapted for rapid, accurate strikes at moving prey on land — a capability that makes the animal a capable surface hunter in a way most fish are not.

In the aquarium it is almost certain to refuse dry flake food or to accept it only very reluctantly. A paludarium diet must centre on small live and frozen invertebrates: bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, copepods, small insect larvae and similar meaty foods placed on the land area or delivered at the water's edge. The species is an active feeder when conditions and temperature are right, but starvation is a real risk in a setup that does not provide appropriate live and frozen foods in an accessible location on land.

Mating

Mudskipper mating is an entirely terrestrial affair. Male Periophthalmus establish and defend territories on the mudflat, centred on the entrance to their burrow. Rival males are met with raised first dorsal fins — the tall, sail-like flag used for visual signalling — along with stereotyped leaping displays (the signature "skip") that advertise the holder's size and vigour. These displays are among the most elaborate performed by any fish out of water, and territory boundaries are contested repeatedly through the tidal cycle.

Courtship directs the same signals toward ripe females. A displaying male raises his dorsal and fans toward a female on the mud surface, and if she is receptive he guides her to the burrow entrance. Entry into the burrow signals readiness to spawn. The entire process takes place on dry or damp mud, not in the water column, and the male's burrow quality is central to mate attraction — a well-constructed burrow with a maintained air chamber signals a competent male capable of incubating eggs.

Breeding

Spawning in Periophthalmus novemradiatus takes place inside a mud burrow constructed and maintained by the male. The burrow is typically J- or Y-shaped, and the male actively maintains a pocket of trapped air at the terminal chamber by carrying mouthfuls of air from the surface. The female enters the burrow and deposits adhesive eggs on the walls or roof of the air-filled chamber; the male then guards the burrow and replenishes the air supply, which keeps the developing eggs aerially incubated rather than submerged. Hatched larvae are pelagic and are carried out into brackish or marine water on the tide, where they develop before recruiting back to estuarine mudflats.

This breeding system — burrow construction, aerial incubation, pelagic larvae and a marine larval phase — means that Periophthalmus novemradiatus is essentially never bred in captivity. Even in large, well-designed paludariums, replicating the tidal cycle, the mud substrate deep enough for a real burrow, and the transition of larvae to marine water is not practically achievable by home aquarists. Wild-caught animals dominate the trade. This should be understood before acquiring the species: captive breeding is not a realistic goal, and wild populations sustain whatever specimens reach the market.

In the aquarium

Keeping Periophthalmus novemradiatus demands a paludarium, not an aquarium. The key requirement is a large land area — firm mud or a mixed mud-sand substrate several centimetres deep — combined with a shallow brackish water section (5–15 ppt specific gravity, made up with marine salt to the appropriate salinity), a tight-fitting lid to maintain high humidity, and warm conditions throughout (68–79 °F). A standard fish tank with no emergent land area is simply unsuitable; the fish will spend most of its time trying to escape or resting in the water unhappily, and its health declines rapidly without access to air and land.

The tank must be covered: mudskippers are excellent jumpers and escape readily. Males are territorial and will fight persistently in small spaces, so either keep a single individual or provide a very large footprint with multiple burrow sites and visual barriers. Tank mates, if any, must be brackish-tolerant and unable to harm or be harmed by the mudskipper; most aquarists keep the species alone or with other intertidal specialists.

Feeding must be done on the land area or at the water's edge — live and frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, copepods and small crustaceans. Flake is typically refused. Water quality should be stable and filtration suited to the brackish paludarium format. The species is not for beginners, and most specimens offered for sale are wild-collected, a fact that should weigh on the decision to acquire one.

Conservation

Periophthalmus novemradiatus is assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient — a status that reflects insufficient population data rather than a confirmed low-risk judgement. Small estuarine mudskippers with patchy distributional records and little directed field study frequently receive this designation, and it should not be read as a clean bill of health. The species' dependence on intact mangrove forests and brackish estuaries ties it closely to one of the world's most threatened coastal habitat types: mangrove clearance for aquaculture, coastal development, and conversion to rice paddies has removed large areas of potential mudskipper habitat across South and Southeast Asia over recent decades.

Because the species cannot be bred in captivity, all aquarium specimens are wild-collected from estuarine habitats. Demand is niche and volumes are low, but any collection pressure falls entirely on wild populations. Prospective keepers should source animals from reputable importers and consider whether the complex husbandry requirements can genuinely be met before acquiring a fish that cannot be replaced from a captive-bred supply.
