Dormitator lebretonis, the African fat sleeper, is a small, heavyset sleeper from the estuarine creeks and coastal drainages of West and Central Africa — and, like every member of the family Eleotridae, it is not a true goby. The giveaway is in the pelvic fins: in a true goby they are fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc; in a sleeper they remain separate, and Dormitator lebretonis is emphatically a sleeper. Described by Steindachner in 1870, it is the Old-World counterpart of the better-known fat sleepers of the Americas, sharing their blunt-headed, thickset body, their brackish-estuarine lifestyle, and their amphidromous breeding strategy — adults spawn in fresh or slightly brackish water, the male guards adhesive eggs, but the tiny hatchlings drift downstream to develop at sea, which means the fish cannot be closed-cycle bred in an aquarium. Wild-collected stock appears occasionally in specialist outlets; it is a durable, characterful fish for a brackish tank that rewards patient, live-food-focused husbandry.

Taxonomy & naming

Dormitator lebretonis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1870. The Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — places the genus Dormitator in the family Eleotridae (sleepers and gudgeons), not in Gobiidae proper. This distinction matters: the true gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) carry their pelvic fins fused into a functional sucker disc; the eleotrids keep their pelvic fins separate. Dormitator is therefore a sleeper, not a goby, regardless of its frequent trade label.

The genus Dormitator spans the Atlantic basin, with species in the Americas (D. maculatus, D. latifrons) and this single African representative. Earlier authors occasionally placed West African material under Eleotris or used broad Old-World combinations before Steindachner formalised the current binomial. The species epithet honours a French collector whose name appears in 19th-century West African ichthyological literature. No synonyms have been widely applied since the original description entered stable use.

Morphology

Dormitator lebretonis is a compact, deep-bodied fish reaching roughly 2–3 in standard length, with the stocky, blunt-headed profile typical of the fat sleepers. The body tapers rearward from a broad head and thick nape, the mouth is wide and slightly upturned, and the eyes sit high on the head. Colouration is sombre: generally a brownish-olive or greyish-brown above, paler on the flanks, with faint mottled or barred patterning that provides camouflage against a muddy or sandy substrate. The fins are rounded and somewhat fleshy.

The pelvic fins are separate and not fused — the defining character of the Eleotridae. Males may show slightly more intense colouration and fuller finnage than females during the breeding season, but obvious sexual dimorphism is not strongly developed in this species compared to some smaller gudgeons.

Habitat

This species is native to the coastal drainages and estuarine zones of West and Central Africa. It is an estuarine and brackish-water fish, most commonly encountered in the lower reaches of rivers, tidal creeks, mangrove margins, and lagoon edges where freshwater mixes with saltwater. It tolerates a wide salinity range — from nearly fresh to moderately brackish — and can enter fully fresh reaches, particularly when moving upstream to spawn.

Water conditions in its native range are warm (72–82 °F), with a pH broadly neutral to slightly alkaline (7.0–7.8) reflecting the estuarine chemistry of coastal West African lowlands. Substrates are typically soft mud, sand, or silt. The fish rests on or near the bottom in sheltered, vegetated or debris-strewn shallows and is largely crepuscular or nocturnal in activity.

Feeding

Dormitator lebretonis is a micro-predator and bottom-forager. In the wild it takes small invertebrates, worms, crustaceans, insect larvae, and organic detritus from soft substrates and the water column. Like most eleotrids, it is an opportunistic hunter rather than a pursuit predator, relying on a swift lunge from ambush.

In the aquarium it does best on a varied live and frozen diet: bloodworm, brine shrimp, copepods, daphnia, tubifex, and small earthworm fragments all work well. Many specimens will ignore dry flake entirely or accept it only inconsistently; keeping the fish in good condition and colouring demands regular live or frozen food. A fish maintained on flake alone tends to lose condition over time. Its broad mouth means it can take larger food items than its body size suggests, and larger specimens will take small feeder invertebrates or very small fish.

Mating

Dormitator lebretonis follows the amphidromous breeding strategy typical of the genus. Adults are capable of spawning in fresh or slightly brackish water. The male selects and defends a spawning site — typically a hard surface such as a flat stone, a root, or a sheltered cave-like depression — and attracts females with lateral displays and fin-spreading behaviour. Courtship is brief; once a female is drawn in, spawning proceeds on or near the substrate.

Because the larval phase occurs at sea, natural breeding in the aquarium cannot produce a self-sustaining population. Wild populations migrate between estuaries and fresh headwaters on a seasonal or tide-driven basis, and this movement is integral to successful reproduction. The species is therefore wild-collected rather than captive-propagated, and buyers should expect to be purchasing imported fish.

Breeding

Spawning has been observed under aquarium conditions in the related American fat sleepers, and the biology of D. lebretonis is presumed similar: the female deposits a clutch of small adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface, and the male guards and fans them until hatching. Hatching occurs within a few days at warm temperatures.

However, the newly hatched larvae of amphidromous species such as Dormitator require a marine or estuarine larval phase to complete development. Hatchlings drifting into fresh water fail to develop normally; those that reach brackish or coastal marine water develop as pelagic larvae before settling and migrating upstream as post-larvae. This larval-drift requirement means the fish is effectively impossible to breed through to fry in a closed home aquarium — no marine settling stage can realistically be provided. Dormitator lebretonis should be considered a wild-collected species, and this conservation reality applies to all stock in the trade.

In the aquarium

Dormitator lebretonis is an occasional and specialist import rather than a mainstream aquarium fish. It is best kept in a dedicated brackish tank with a specific gravity of roughly 1.005–1.010 (5–15 ppt salt), a temperature of 72–82 °F, and a pH of 7.0–7.8. A soft sandy substrate suits its bottom-dwelling habits; caves, pipes, and sheltered retreats are appreciated for resting and hiding. The tank should be tightly covered — sleepers are capable of climbing or jumping from open tanks.

It is best kept species-only or with similarly sized, brackish-tolerant fishes that it cannot fit in its mouth; it will eat small tankmates without hesitation. Males can be territorial with one another, so a single male or well-matched pairs with line-of-sight breaks work best. Water quality should be maintained carefully: regular partial water changes with salt replacement keep the brackish chemistry stable. Diet must include live or frozen invertebrates; this is not a fish for a flake-only regimen. Stock is wild-caught, so a quarantine period before introduction to the display tank is advisable.

Conservation

Dormitator lebretonis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries the status Not Evaluated. Its range covers the coastal lowlands of West and Central Africa — a region subject to significant habitat pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and the degradation of mangrove and estuarine systems. As an estuarine and lower-river species it is potentially vulnerable to these changes, though no population trend data are available.

Because it cannot be captive-bred and all aquarium stock is wild-collected, any significant commercial demand would draw directly on wild populations. The species appears in the trade only sporadically and in small numbers, limiting the impact for now, but buyers should be aware that each fish represents a wild-caught individual. Supporting responsible and selective collection practices is the main lever available to aquarists concerned about the species' status.
