Taxonomy & naming
Dormitator maculatus was originally described by the German naturalist Marcus Elieser Bloch in 1792 as Sciaena maculata, placing it in the drum family on account of its mottled appearance. It was subsequently moved to the genus Dormitator Gill, 1863, where the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — retains it today. The family is Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, placing the fat sleeper firmly outside the true gobies despite the casual name applied to many eleotrids in the trade.
The key anatomical point is the pelvic fins. True gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) bear pelvic fins fused into a cup-like adhesive sucker disc; the fat sleeper, like all eleotrids, keeps its pelvic fins separate — a feature visible on any clear photograph. The genus Dormitator includes a small number of neotropical and Atlantic-coast species, of which D. maculatus is the most widespread and the one most frequently encountered in the trade.
The original combination Sciaena maculata is no longer in use. No other synonyms are in widespread circulation, though the name has occasionally appeared in older literature under Gobius and Eleotris before the genus was stabilised.
Morphology
The fat sleeper is a powerfully built, deep-bellied fish. FishBase records a maximum total length of 27.5 in, though individuals above 12–15.5 in are uncommon in the trade; the common length in the literature is around 5.5 in TL, reflecting the size at which most wild-caught specimens are collected. The head is large and flattened, the mouth wide and the body heavy-set and tapered toward a rounded caudal fin — the classic sleeper body plan.
Colouration is a cryptic mosaic of brown, olive and dark mottling on the flanks, with a pale belly. The dorsal surface and the lateral scale rows carry darker blotches that give the fish its specific epithet (maculatus: spotted or blotched). Breeding males undergo a striking nuptial colour change, developing heightened contrast and intensified hues during courtship. Two separate dorsal fins are present, the first spinous and the second soft-rayed, another Eleotrid character shared with the gudgeons of Australasia.
The sexes can be distinguished by size at sexual maturity — males mature at approximately 2 in TL and females at 2 in TL according to FishBase — but large adults of either sex are similar externally outside the nuptial period.
Habitat
Dormitator maculatus inhabits the coastal lowland zone along the Atlantic slope from North Carolina south through the Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean to southeastern Brazil. It favours estuaries, mangrove channels, tidal lagoons, intertidal mudflats, coastal ponds, roadside ditches and the lower reaches of coastal rivers — broadly, any shallow, slow or still water with muddy substrate in the tidal influence zone. FishBase records it from depths to 30 ft in intertidal mud habitats.
It is most frequent in brackish water but tolerates a wide salinity range of 0–21 parts per thousand, moving freely between fresh and brackish conditions with tidal and seasonal changes. Temperature tolerance is broad: FishBase gives 63–95 °F as the wild range, reflecting the subtropical to tropical span of its distribution. The fat sleeper is at home in turbid, hypoxic, heavily vegetated environments where many fish cannot survive; it is a hardy estuarine generalist rather than a fastidious, clear-water specialist.
Feeding
In the wild the fat sleeper is an omnivore with a heavy plant component. FishBase documents its diet as macrophytes (aquatic plants), sediment, benthic algae and ostracods (small crustaceans), making it unusual among eleotrids in taking significant amounts of vegetation alongside animal food. In the aquarium, however, the fish leans toward live and meaty foods: hobbyists report success with live minnows, cut shrimp, mysis, earthworms, baby crayfish and similar protein-rich items. Dry flake is typically refused or ignored.
For aquarium management, feeding live or frozen whole-prey items — gut-loaded feeder shrimp, earthworms, defrosted prawns — is the most reliable approach. The fat sleeper's wide mouth and predatory frame means it will eat fish that fit inside it, and tankmates should be sized accordingly. Its wild diet of algae and detritus may be supplemented in the aquarium with occasional blanched vegetables, though meaty foods drive condition and growth.
Mating
Dormitator maculatus is amphidromous. Adults spawn in fresh or brackish water, and the male undergoes a pronounced nuptial colour change and engages in a complex courtship parade before spawning. FishBase notes that spawning is accompanied by nuptial coloration changes and a multi-phase courtship display. The male takes and defends a spawning site — typically a hard surface such as a flat stone or the wall of a sheltered cavity — and courts the female by displaying his intensified coloration and performing a series of approach-and-retreat postures.
Because the larvae must reach the sea to develop, natural spawning triggers and tidal cues play a central role in the timing of reproduction. Captive fish held in standing fresh or brackish water lack those cues, and no reliable captive breeding of D. maculatus has been established in the aquarium hobby.
Breeding
Once the female accepts a mate, she deposits adhesive eggs on the chosen surface and the male takes immediate sole charge of the clutch. At 81 °F, FishBase records egg incubation at 11–16 hours — an unusually short incubation reflecting the tidal imperative: the tiny larvae must hatch and drift seaward on the next ebb tide. The male guards the nest through incubation, but once the larvae have hatched they are swept by tidal currents downstream and out to sea, where they develop as marine plankton before recruiting back to coastal and estuarine habitats as post-larvae.
This amphidromous life cycle is the defining constraint for the keeper: captive-bred fat sleepers are not available, and the fish sold in the trade are wild-collected. There is no established technique for completing the life cycle in captivity — the marine larval phase requires conditions that cannot be replicated in a home aquarium. Hobbyists should be aware that all specimens are wild-caught and should source them responsibly.
In the aquarium
The fat sleeper is a fish for the dedicated species-tank keeper rather than a community aquarium. Even at the common trade size of 6 in or less it is a capable predator of anything that fits in its wide mouth, and its potential adult size of 27.5 in demands a very large aquarium if the fish is to be kept long-term and with anything resembling appropriate conditions. A brackish water setup is strongly recommended: the fat sleeper is most frequent in brackish habitats in the wild, and a specific gravity of around 1.002–1.010 suits it well. Pure fresh water is tolerated but is not ideal.
Temperature should sit in the mid-range of its wild tolerance — roughly 72–86 °F is practical for the aquarium. Heavy filtration is needed because this is a large, meaty-food-eating fish that produces substantial waste. Provide a muddy or sandy substrate, generous hiding areas and dim lighting; like most sleepers it is a sit-and-wait ambush predator that spends much of its time resting on or near the bottom. It is prone to escape through any gap, and a weighted, close-fitting lid is essential. The fish is not aggressive to conspecifics in large tanks but will eat any tankmate it can swallow. Because all specimens are wild-caught, a quarantine period on arrival is important.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Dormitator maculatus as Least Concern in 2022. Its wide distribution along the Atlantic slope from North Carolina to southeastern Brazil — encompassing numerous estuarine systems, lagoons and coastal wetlands — and its tolerance of highly disturbed, brackish and polluted habitats give it a broad ecological buffer against localised threats. Stable population trends are noted across its core range.
The main pressures on the species are the same as those affecting coastal and estuarine ecosystems throughout the Americas: mangrove clearance, wetland drainage, water quality degradation from agriculture and urban runoff, and alteration of tidal hydrology by coastal development. Because the fat sleeper is amphidromous, any barrier that interrupts larval recruitment between fresh water and the sea — such as a tidal barrage or heavily modified estuary — could affect local populations. In the aquarium trade all specimens are wild-caught; responsible sourcing and careful transport of appropriately sized adults minimises unnecessary mortality.
