Taxonomy & naming
Eleotris picta was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1863, placing it in the genus Eleotris — a broadly distributed genus of sleeper gudgeons that occurs across the tropical Indo-Pacific, Africa and the Americas. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) remains the authority for the valid name and places the genus firmly in the family Eleotridae. The species epithet picta is Latin for 'painted' or 'spotted', referring to the patterned body.
The first distinction to establish is taxonomic: Eleotris picta is not a true goby. True gobies — the families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae and Oxudercidae — fuse their pelvic fins into a cup-shaped sucker disc used to cling to stones and substrate. Eleotrids keep both pelvic fins entirely separate. The hobby routinely sells sleepers as 'gobies', which is convenient but misleading. The family Eleotridae includes the large-bodied sleepers (Oxyeleotris), the gudgeons of Australasia and New Guinea (Mogurnda, Hypseleotris, Tateurndina), and the pantropical Eleotris and Dormitator, among others.
The wide Indo-Pacific range of E. picta — recorded from Central American Pacific drainages, parts of the Indo-Australian region and Africa — reflects the dispersal capacity typical of amphidromous species, whose marine larval phase allows them to colonise river systems across ocean basins. Older literature may list the species under different generic or sub-generic names; Eleotris is the valid assignment per current usage.
Morphology
Eleotris picta is a compact, moderately elongate sleeper reaching approximately 1–2 in in standard length. The body is cylindrical in cross-section and flattens slightly toward the tail, a typical build for a bottom-oriented ambush predator. The head is broad and slightly depressed, with a large mouth suited to engulfing small invertebrates whole. The patterning that gives the fish its common name — spotted sleeper — consists of scattered dark spots or markings on the flanks and fins against a pale to olive-brown ground colour.
As in all eleotrids, the pelvic fins are separate and do not form the fused sucker disc present in true gobies. The dorsal fin is divided into two parts: a short, spiny first dorsal and a longer second dorsal. Sexes are difficult to distinguish externally outside of the breeding season, with males generally slightly larger and showing more intense patterning when in condition. The caudal fin is rounded.
Habitat
Eleotris picta occupies the lower reaches of rivers and streams, tidal creeks, mangrove edges and estuaries across its Indo-Pacific range. It is an estuarine and euryhaline species, tolerating a wide range of salinities from fresh water to brackish coastal waters; it is most frequently encountered in habitats where fresh and salt water mix, and it freely moves between these zones. Substrates in its natural habitat tend to be soft — mud, sand and silt with organic debris — typical of the sluggish lower-river and tidal habitats it favours.
Water temperatures across its tropical range run approximately 75–82 °F, and the species is not associated with cool, upland streams. Its brackish estuarine preference sets it apart from the many strictly freshwater sleepers and gudgeons of Australasia, and keepers should take note: this is not a soft-acidic blackwater fish, but a warm-water, brackish-tolerant species adapted to coastal lowland environments.
Feeding
Eleotris picta is a micro-predator, hunting small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and copepods from the substrate and water column. Like other eleotrids it is a visual, sit-and-wait predator rather than an active open-water hunter, and it relies on speed and a wide mouth to engulf prey.
In the aquarium the spotted sleeper typically ignores dry flake foods or takes them poorly; it performs best on a varied diet of small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, copepods and similarly sized items. Conditioning for spawning, if attempted, requires live and frozen feeds. The key care point on diet is honesty: a fish kept on flake alone will lose condition, and live or frozen food is not optional but essential for long-term health.
Mating
Courtship in Eleotris picta follows the pattern general to the genus: males establish and defend a territory around a suitable spawning site — typically a hard surface such as a submerged stone, root or piece of wood — and court ripe females by intensifying their colour pattern and displaying with their fins. The male's role in guarding the territory is vigorous; he will drive off rival males and may be aggressive toward tankmates.
Because E. picta is amphidromous, the breeding cycle is inextricably tied to the coastal marine environment. Spawning takes place in fresh or low-salinity water, but the subsequent larval development depends on the sea. This means that even if courtship behaviour is triggered in an aquarium, completing the life cycle is not feasible in captivity — the larvae that hatch cannot be reared in a closed freshwater or brackish system.
Breeding
Eleotris picta breeds by the amphidromous strategy shared across the genus: adults spawn in fresh or low-salinity water, where the male guards the adhesive eggs on a hard surface until they hatch, but the tiny larvae are swept downstream into the sea. There they develop as marine plankton for a larval period, after which the juveniles — now competent to move in fresh water — migrate back upriver to grow to adulthood.
This life-history means that Eleotris picta is, in practice, impossible to breed in a home aquarium. The marine larval phase is a non-negotiable part of the cycle; larvae cannot be raised in fresh or brackish tank water. All specimens in the hobby are wild-collected from their native rivers and estuaries. Keepers should be aware of this dependency and source fish responsibly, and should not expect or attempt breeding. The parental care component — the male guarding eggs on a stone — will occur if conditions are right, but rearing the resulting larvae requires access to the sea.
In the aquarium
Eleotris picta is an interesting but specialist fish that rewards keepers who understand its needs. A tank of at least 23.5 in in length provides adequate territory for a single specimen or a pair; the bottom should be furnished with a soft sandy substrate and plenty of cover — smooth stones, pieces of bogwood, sections of pipe or ceramic caves — which serve both as shelter and potential spawning sites. The tank must be covered securely, as sleepers are capable jumpers.
Critically, this species benefits from or requires brackish conditions: a low to moderate salinity (specific gravity around 1.003–1.008) more closely replicates its natural estuarine habitat and is likely to promote better health and longer-term survival. Water temperature should be maintained at 75–82 °F. It is a bottom-oriented predator and will eat any tankmates small enough to fit in its mouth, so companions should be chosen accordingly — similarly sized robust species rather than small nano fish. Diet must be live or frozen micro-foods; dry food is typically refused. The spotted sleeper is a rewarding fish for the specialist keeper, but its amphidromous nature means it arrives as a wild-caught animal and cannot be replaced by captive-bred stock.
Conservation
Eleotris picta has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category — it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigning a speculative status. The species is broadly distributed across the Indo-Pacific, which in principle suggests resilience, but small, data-sparse estuarine fish are often poorly monitored and the absence of an assessment does not imply security.
The pressures most relevant to this species are those affecting coastal and estuarine habitats across the tropics: mangrove clearance, river modification, pollution from agriculture and urban runoff, and changes to the salinity gradients of tidal creeks and river mouths. Because E. picta is amphidromous, it is also sensitive to barriers that interrupt the connection between freshwater spawning sites and the marine larval habitat — dams, weirs and water diversions can sever this migratory link and locally extirpate populations even where habitat remains. The aquarium trade supplies it via wild collection, which adds modest additional pressure; hobbyists should be aware that no captive-bred source exists and that each specimen represents a wild fish removed from the natural population.
