Taxonomy & naming
Eleotris oxycephala was described by Coenraad Jacob Temminck and Hermann Schlegel in 1845 in their Fauna Japonica, the collaborative natural history of Japan produced from collections made during Philipp Franz von Siebold's expeditions in the 1820s. The type locality is Japan — Nagasaki is commonly cited as the collection point — and the syntypes' whereabouts are unrecorded. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) maintains the original combination, placing the species in the genus Eleotris and the family Eleotridae.
Eleotridae is the family of sleepers and gudgeons — a sister lineage to the true gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) rather than part of them. The diagnostic difference is visible in a live fish: in a true goby the pelvic fins are fused into a cup-like sucker disc used for adhesion in fast current; in a sleeper the pelvic fins stay separate, and there is no disc. Eleotris oxycephala is a sleeper. The common names 'sharphead sleeper' and (less precisely) 'sharphead goby' both circulate in the aquarium trade, reflecting the pointed snout that gives the epithet oxycephala — Greek for 'sharp head'. The species has historically also been listed under the synonym Eleotris cyprinoides in some regional literature, though the Catalog of Fishes treats oxycephala as the valid name.
Morphology
The sharphead sleeper is a moderately elongate, depressed fish with a distinctly pointed snout — the feature that gives the species its name. FishBase records a maximum total length of 7.5 in, though most fish observed in the wild run closer to 4–4.5 in standard length. The body is cylindrical in cross-section toward the head and compressed toward the tail, typical of the sleeper body plan. Coloration is generally brownish or olive-grey with darker mottling along the flanks, giving good camouflage against cobble, sand, and leaf litter; the belly is paler. The fins are rounded and unremarkable, lacking the bright sexual markings of some smaller eleotrids.
Sexual dimorphism in the species is modest. Males tend to be slightly larger than females, and the sexes can be distinguished by vent shape and abdominal profile in breeding condition, but there are no bold external colour differences or nuchal humps of the kind seen in species such as Tateurndina. The pelvic fins — the diagnostic feature — are clearly separate and distinctly set apart from one another, not united into any disc, confirming the fish's eleotrid identity at a glance.
Habitat
Eleotris oxycephala is found across East Asia — Japan, the Korean Peninsula, China, Taiwan, and adjacent island groups — with GBIF occurrence records confirming a distribution spanning roughly 27°N to 37°N latitude. Within that range it is a fish of the lower river and estuary: mangrove edges, reed-root systems, tidal channels, and the brackish to freshwater reaches where river meets sea. It favours substrates of cobble, sand, and mud, is demersal in habit, and tends to lurk among dense marginal vegetation and bottom cover rather than holding position in open current.
Although it tolerates a broad salinity range — moving freely through marine, brackish, and fresh water as its amphidromous life cycle demands — it is most consistently found in the lowest-salinity tidal reaches rather than in open sea or far upstream. It is classed as subtropical on FishBase, reflecting the cooler waters of its Japanese and Korean range, and it is probably tolerant of considerably lower temperatures than the warm-tropical species that dominate the 'goby' section of the aquarium trade.
Feeding
Eleotris oxycephala is a micro-predator, as are the sleepers generally. Its diet in the wild consists of small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and similar bottom-dwelling prey — taken by ambush from cover near the substrate. The pointed snout and demersal habit are consistent with a sit-and-wait predator that strikes at close range rather than chasing prey in open water. Larger individuals are capable of taking small fish.
In the aquarium it should be offered a varied diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, small earthworms, and similar. Like most members of the family, it is unlikely to accept dry flake readily, and a fish fed predominantly on flake will gradually lose condition. Meatier, varied feeding — live or high-quality frozen invertebrates — is the key to keeping this species healthy in the long term. It is not an algae grazer and should not be expected to act as a tank cleaner.
Mating
Eleotris oxycephala is an amphidromous species: it breeds in fresh or very low-salinity water, and courtship and spawning take place in the lower reaches of rivers and tidal streams. The male establishes and defends a territory around a suitable spawning site — a cavity, overhang, or hard surface — and courts approaching females. Courtship behaviour, including display and site inspection, has been documented in aquarium conditions, confirming that the fish will engage in full courtship even in captivity.
Females in spawning condition develop a full, rounded abdomen. Pairing occurs when the female accepts the male's site and enters the spawning cavity. The behaviour is consistent with the broader Eleotris pattern of substrate-guarding, with the male as the active territorial partner. Given that the larvae must eventually reach the sea to complete development, wild breeding sites are typically in the lower watershed where downstream drift is possible.
Breeding
Spawning in Eleotris oxycephala follows the eleotrid pattern: the female deposits adhesive eggs on a hard surface — the roof or wall of a cave, a stone underside, or similar substrate — and the male takes charge of the clutch from that point, guarding and aerating the eggs until they hatch. Courtship and spawning have been recorded in aquarium conditions, so the fish will initiate breeding in captivity.
However, the amphidromous life cycle creates an insurmountable barrier to full closed-cycle captive breeding: the newly hatched larvae, which are tiny and planktonic, would in the wild drift downstream and out to sea, spending roughly three to four months developing as marine plankton before the post-larvae metamorphose and begin migrating back upriver. Replicating an open-ocean larval stage in a home aquarium is not feasible. The consequence is that Eleotris oxycephala cannot be raised through a complete captive generation, and virtually all fish in the hobby are wild-collected from their native East Asian rivers. This dependence on wild collection is an important factor both for sustainability and for understanding why the species does not appear in captive-bred supply chains the way a cave-spawning resident goby or gudgeon would.
In the aquarium
The sharphead sleeper is an uncommon aquarium fish in the West, appearing mainly among hobbyists with a specific interest in amphidromous gobies and gudgeons from East Asia. It is substantially larger than the nano gobies that dominate the trade — up to 7.5 in — and needs a spacious, well-filtered tank of at least 25 US gal for a single individual, more for a group. As a bottom-dwelling ambush predator it appreciates a natural-feeling setup: a dark substrate of sand or fine gravel, plenty of smooth stones, driftwood, and caves or overhangs to retreat into and hunt from.
Because it is an estuary fish, a small addition of marine salt (around 1–3 g per litre) is often recommended to replicate its natural brackish habitat and appears to improve long-term health; it should not be kept in a fully freshwater community tank indefinitely. Its size and predatory disposition mean that small tankmates will be consumed. Water temperature should reflect its subtropical origin — the mid-teens to low-to-mid twenties Celsius are appropriate — rather than the 79–82 °F of a typical tropical tank. The fish is a confirmed jumper and requires a tight-fitting lid. All specimens available in the trade are wild-collected: the amphidromous larval stage cannot be replicated in captivity, so there is no captive-bred supply. Acclimation of wild fish requires care, and a period of quarantine is strongly advised.
Conservation
Eleotris oxycephala was assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List in 2025. The species has a broad distribution across East Asia and is associated with coastal and estuarine habitats that, while subject to human pressure, remain extensive across its range. FishBase notes a low-to-moderate vulnerability to fishing pressure, consistent with a species that is not targeted commercially in large quantities.
Nonetheless, the habitats that Eleotris oxycephala depends on — mangroves, tidal channels, and the lower reaches of East Asian rivers — are among the most heavily modified coastal environments in the world. Mangrove clearance for aquaculture, river damming that cuts off upstream migration routes, coastal development, and water pollution from agriculture and industry are all documented pressures on amphidromous fish communities in Japan, China, and Korea. Dams in particular are a structural threat to amphidromous species: a fish whose larvae must drift to sea and whose post-larvae must climb back upriver is severed from part of its life cycle by any impassable barrier. The Least Concern assessment reflects current population stability, not the absence of risk, and ongoing monitoring of coastal habitat quality across its range is warranted.
