Taxonomy & naming
Favonigobius gymnauchen was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1860, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — the authority for valid names — places it in the genus Favonigobius, family Oxudercidae. The Oxudercidae are the true gobies sensu stricto; their defining character is the fusion of the pelvic fins into a cup-like adhesive sucker disc, a feature absent from the sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae) that share much of the same habitat. That sucker disc allows gobies to hold position on firm or rocky surfaces in tidal current, and Favonigobius uses it on softer substrates in much the same way.
The genus Favonigobius contains a handful of small Indo-West Pacific species previously shuffled between several large catch-all genera — Gobius, Vaimosa, and others — before modern phylogenetic work consolidated them. The epithet gymnauchen comes from the Greek gymnos (naked, bare) and auchen (neck or nape), referring to the scaleless or finely scaled nape region, a visible character used in the original description. Older literature and regional field guides may list this species under Gobius gymnauchen; the current combination is the one recognised by CoF.
Morphology
Favonigobius gymnauchen is a small goby, typically reaching 1.5–2.5 in standard length in adults. The body is slender and somewhat cylindrical, as is typical of sand-dwelling gobies that rest on the bottom rather than clinging to rock faces. Colouration is cryptic: a pale tan or sandy base overlaid with a series of darker blotches or bars along the flank, providing camouflage against the silty, pale-bottomed estuarine substrate it favours. The undersides are paler.
The pelvic fins are fused into the rounded sucker disc characteristic of the true gobies — the easiest single character distinguishing this family from the eleotrids. Two dorsal fins are present, as in all gobies. Sexual dimorphism is not strongly pronounced in this species, though males tend to be slightly larger and may show more intense patterning during the breeding season. The mouth is terminal and moderately sized, suited to picking up small benthic prey.
Habitat
This species inhabits the brackish to mildly saline tidal zone — estuaries, tidal rivers, mangrove-fringed creeks, and intertidal mudflats — across the Indo-West Pacific. It is a benthic fish, spending most of its time resting on or moving across soft substrate: mud, silt, and fine sand in the lower reaches of rivers where salt and fresh water mix. Salinities in its typical haunts range from around 5 to 25 ppt, and it can penetrate a short way into fully fresh water, though it is fundamentally a brackish species.
Water temperatures in its natural range are warm: 75–82 °F is typical for the tropical and subtropical estuaries of South and South-East Asia. The tidal rhythm of its habitat means it regularly experiences fluctuating salinity, oxygen levels, and turbidity, and it appears tolerant of these swings within the brackish range. It is not a fish of open, fast-flowing rivers or upland streams.
Feeding
Favonigobius gymnauchen is a benthic micro-predator. In the wild it forages on the substrate surface, picking up small crustaceans, copepods, small worms, insect larvae, and organic material from the sediment. The diet is broadly that of an opportunistic small-prey predator rather than an algae grazer or particle filter-feeder.
In the aquarium it should be offered live and frozen small foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and small copepods are appropriate. Like most small gobies, it typically refuses or only grudgingly accepts dry flake food, and a diet of flake alone will lead to poor condition and dull colour. Conditioning for breeding calls for a varied live and frozen menu. Small frozen invertebrate foods offered close to the substrate — where this species naturally forages — are the most reliably taken.
Mating
Favonigobius gymnauchen is a resident brackish-water cave or substrate spawner. It does not undergo the amphidromous migrations of many stream gobies, and its breeding cycle is completed in the same brackish estuarine habitat where it lives. Males establish and defend a small territory, using the cave or crevice within it as a spawning site. Courtship in small substrate-spawning gobies typically involves the male intensifying colour, erecting fins, and displaying at females; once a ripe female enters the cave or spawning site, the pair spawns.
This resident spawning mode — with the whole life cycle confined to the brackish zone — means that, in principle, it can be bred under aquarium conditions, provided salinity, temperature, and space are correctly managed. It is not a species that requires larval development in open sea water.
Breeding
Breeding follows the cave or substrate spawning pattern common to resident gobies. The female lays adhesive eggs on a firm surface — the roof or wall of a cave, a crevice, or a hard object on the bottom — and the male guards and fans them until they hatch, providing genuine parental care in the goby manner. The eggs are adhesive and demersal; the male's fanning keeps them oxygenated and free of sediment, which is especially important in the silty, lower-oxygen conditions of estuarine habitats.
Because this species is not a trade staple and is rarely kept in home aquaria, detailed captive breeding accounts are sparse. However, the resident brackish spawning mode indicates that successful breeding in captivity is achievable with correct conditions: a mature brackish setup (around 10–15 ppt), a spawning cave or tube provided, a compatible pair in good condition, and a varied live and frozen diet for conditioning. Fry are expected to be small and will need appropriately tiny first foods such as rotifers or newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.
In the aquarium
Favonigobius gymnauchen is not a widely kept aquarium fish, and detailed hobby accounts are limited. It is best suited to a species tank or a carefully chosen brackish community that replicates its estuarine habitat: a tank with a fine sand or silt-mix substrate, low to moderate water movement, and a salinity of roughly 5–15 ppt (specific gravity around 1.004–1.010) maintained with marine salt mix, not table salt. Temperature should be kept in the 75–82 °F range. Good filtration is important, as estuarine gobies can be sensitive to ammonia and nitrite in stagnant conditions despite being tolerant of salinity fluctuation.
This is a small, benthic fish that spends most of its time on the bottom, so hiding places in the form of caves, clay pots, short lengths of pipe, or overhanging rocks are appreciated and double as potential spawning sites. Like most small gobies it can be jumpy and a tight-fitting lid is advisable. It should not be kept in plain fresh water; the absence of salt is one of the most common reasons brackish gobies fail in captivity. Tank mates, if any, should be similarly sized brackish-tolerant species that will not compete aggressively for the bottom space this fish uses.
Conservation
Favonigobius gymnauchen has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List, and no conservation category applies here; it is recorded as Not Evaluated. Its broad Indo-West Pacific distribution across the estuaries and tidal rivers of South and South-East Asia suggests it is not immediately threatened across most of its range, and estuarine gobies of this type are generally considered resilient to moderate fishing pressure and habitat disturbance.
However, the estuarine habitats it depends on — tidal mangrove creeks, mudflats, and the lower reaches of tropical rivers — are among the most threatened coastal ecosystem types globally, subject to land reclamation, mangrove clearance, aquaculture development, and pollution from urban and agricultural runoff. Small benthic gobies that depend on clean, soft-substrate estuarine conditions may be locally affected by these pressures even where they are not range-restricted. It is not a species dependent on the aquarium trade, and its conservation status would benefit from a formal IUCN assessment.
