Taxonomy & naming
Favonigobius reichei was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1854, originally placed in the broad catch-all genus Gobius that housed most known gobies at the time. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the international authority for valid fish names — recognises the current combination Favonigobius reichei; the parentheses around the authority indicate that the species has since been moved from its original genus. Bleeker was extraordinarily prolific in his description of Indo-Pacific fishes from museum specimens collected during his years in the Dutch East Indies, and many of his 1850s gobies have since been rearranged across newly erected genera.
The family Oxudercidae, to which Favonigobius belongs, is the modern placement for most of what were formerly called Gobiidae in the narrow sense. Oxudercidae now includes the mudskippers, the worm-gobies and the sand gobies such as Favonigobius. The defining character of the true gobies — including this species — is the fusion of the pelvic fins into a ventral, cup-shaped sucker disc used for clinging to substrate. This is absent in the sleeper gobies (Eleotridae) and gudgeons, which are completely unrelated despite overlapping habitats and a confusingly similar appearance.
The genus Favonigobius encompasses small sand- and silt-dwelling gobies distributed across the Indo-West Pacific, from eastern Africa and the Red Sea through South and Southeast Asia to Australia and the Pacific islands. Old synonyms may appear in the literature under Gobius, Vaimosa or related genera; these are now considered invalid.
Morphology
Favonigobius reichei is a small, slender goby typically reaching around 2–3 in in total length, though precise verified measurements remain sparse in the accessible literature. The body is elongate and subcylindrical, well-adapted for resting on and moving across sandy and silty substrates. Background coloration is pale — whitish to pale tan — with darker blotches, spots or faint barring on the flanks and a pattern of fine markings on the head that is characteristic of the genus. The coloration provides excellent camouflage against intertidal sand and estuarine sediment.
The diagnostic character of the family is immediately visible: the two pelvic fins are fused along their inner margins into a disc-shaped suction cup on the ventral surface, quite different from the free, separate pelvic fins of the sleeper gobies and gudgeons. The first dorsal fin carries a small number of flexible spines; the second dorsal and anal fins are matched in shape and run much of the length of the hind body. The caudal fin is rounded. The eyes are positioned on the top of the head, giving an upward-gazing field of view useful for spotting approaching predators while the fish lies flush against the bottom.
Sexual dimorphism is modest. Males typically show brighter patterning or more developed finnage during the breeding season; females may be fuller-bodied when ripe with eggs. Detailed accounts of dimorphism in Favonigobius reichei specifically are not well documented in the available literature.
Habitat
Favonigobius reichei inhabits the brackish and marine-influenced margins of the Indo-Pacific: estuaries, tidal creeks, intertidal sand and mudflats, coastal lagoons and the lower reaches of tidal rivers. It is a benthic, substrate-associated fish that rests on and moves along sandy or silty bottoms, often in shallow, turbid water subject to tidal influence. Salinity in these habitats can range from mildly brackish (well below full seawater) in upriver reaches to near-marine at the estuary mouth, and this species is considered euryhaline — tolerant of a broad salinity range — but it is not a freshwater fish and does not thrive long-term in plain unsalted tap water.
Temperatures in the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific estuaries it occupies are warm throughout much of the year, typically in the range of roughly 75–86 °F, though the exact verified thermal tolerance of this species is not well documented. The tidal nature of many of its habitats means it is accustomed to fluctuating conditions and moderate current at certain states of the tide, alternating with relative calm at slack water.
The species has been recorded across the Indo-West Pacific arc, with records spanning the Indonesian and Malaysian archipelagoes and potentially parts of the wider Indo-Pacific coastal zone. Precise distribution boundaries and the exact countries where it has been formally confirmed require verification against Bleeker's original material and more recent surveys.
Feeding
Favonigobius reichei is a micro-predator, hunting small invertebrates from and near the substrate surface in the manner typical of sand-dwelling gobies. The natural diet consists of small crustaceans — copepods, amphipods, small shrimp — along with insect larvae, worms, foraminifera, and other tiny benthic organisms encountered while searching sandy and silty substrates. Its small mouth and bottom-oriented feeding posture indicate a diet of prey found on or just above the sediment surface rather than mid-water prey.
In an aquarium context this translates to a need for small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, mysis, and similar items. Like most true gobies, Favonigobius reichei is likely to refuse dry flake entirely or show very poor long-term condition on a flake-only diet. Conditioning the fish for health and any breeding attempt calls for regular live or good-quality frozen foods rather than dried formulations. This is one of the central care challenges of keeping small sand gobies: they are specialist feeders, not opportunistic omnivores.
Mating
Favonigobius reichei is a resident cave and crevice spawner in the manner characteristic of the genus and of most small temperate and tropical gobies that complete their life cycle without an obligate marine larval phase. Males are territorial and compete for access to suitable spawning sites — small caves, rock crevices, shell valves, or any firm substrate overhang that provides shelter for a clutch of eggs. A male in breeding condition will defend a chosen site and court passing females with fin displays and intensified coloration.
Females ripe with eggs are typically broader-bodied and will approach defended sites. Courtship consists of the male leading or enticing the female into the shelter. Unlike amphidromous gobies — whose larvae must develop at sea and which consequently cannot be reliably captive-bred — Favonigobius reichei belongs to the resident guild whose entire reproductive cycle takes place in the same brackish or inshore waters where the adults live. Whether aquarium specimens have been reliably bred in captivity is not documented in the readily available literature, but the biology points toward captive breeding being achievable under the right brackish conditions.
Breeding
Spawning in Favonigobius reichei follows the pattern typical of cave-spawning gobies: the female deposits a clutch of small, adhesive eggs on the ceiling or wall of the chosen shelter — a rock crevice, shell, or cave substitute — and after spawning is complete the male takes sole charge of the eggs. He guards the site against intruders and fans the eggs with his fins and body movements to maintain water circulation and prevent fungal buildup, tending the clutch until the larvae hatch. This represents genuine paternal care, unlike the open-water egg-scattering of cyprinids or the mouthbrooding of some cichlids.
Hatching times in sand gobies are temperature-dependent, typically on the order of several days under warm tropical conditions. The larvae of Favonigobius under natural conditions may spend a period in the water column before settling, though the extent to which this species has an obligate marine larval phase — as amphidromous gobies do — is not confirmed in the accessible literature. If the larval phase is short and completed within the estuary, breeding in captivity in a mature brackish aquarium is plausible; if larvae require extended open-sea development, captive breeding would be effectively impossible. Data on this specific point for Favonigobius reichei are sparse.
Aquarists attempting to breed this species should provide plenty of caves and crevices, maintain stable low-end brackish salinity (a specific gravity of approximately 1.003–1.010), and feed both sexes on live and frozen foods to condition them. Observation of cave-guarding behaviour by the male would indicate a successful spawn has occurred.
In the aquarium
Favonigobius reichei is a specialist fish for the brackish aquarium, not a beginner community fish or a species suited to a standard freshwater planted tank. The first and most important requirement is salinity: this is a brackish estuarine goby, and keeping it in plain unsalted fresh water will lead to slow decline. A low to moderate brackish mix — marine salt to a specific gravity of roughly 1.003–1.010, representing perhaps a third to a half of full seawater strength — is the appropriate starting point, mimicking the tidal creek and estuary conditions it inhabits naturally.
The aquarium should have a sandy substrate, as this is a bottom-dwelling fish that moves across and rests on sand in the wild. Caves, rocks, and hollow decorations serve both as territories and as potential spawning sites; without them the fish is exposed and stressed. Like virtually all true gobies this species is a potential jumper, so a close-fitting cover is essential. Tankmates, if any, should be other brackish-tolerant species of similar size — mollies, archer fish fry, other small sand gobies — rather than freshwater tropicals, which will not share the salinity requirement.
Feeding is the main daily challenge: this is a micro-predator that needs live or frozen small invertebrates. Bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, and similar items should form the staple diet; dry flake is likely to be refused or should at minimum be supplemented heavily with wet foods. Keep the tank covered, the water well-filtered and free of ammonia and nitrite, and maintain the brackish salinity consistently. This is a rewarding fish for the dedicated brackish specialist but is not a casual community choice.
Conservation
Favonigobius reichei has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. As an estuarine and intertidal species distributed across the Indo-West Pacific, it inhabits one of the most human-modified coastal environments on earth: estuaries are subject to land reclamation, mangrove clearance, coastal development, pollution from agricultural runoff, and sedimentation from deforested catchments across the region.
The broad Indo-Pacific distribution of Favonigobius — spanning Indonesia, Malaysia and potentially much of the coastal arc from the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific — suggests it is not immediately threatened with global extinction, but local populations in highly developed coastal regions may face significant pressure. Small-bodied estuarine gobies are rarely commercially important as food fish and are not typically a major target of ornamental fishing, so trade pressure is low. The main conservation concerns are habitat-level: the health of the tidal creeks, mangroves and sandy estuaries that the species depends on. Formalising an IUCN assessment with accurate distribution data would clarify the picture.
