Taxonomy & naming
Gobiopterus stellatus was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1927, with the type locality given as Lake Lanigay, Polangui, Albay Province, Luzon, Philippines. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — the authority for valid names — places it in the genus Gobiopterus, family Oxudercidae. The Oxudercidae encompass what was long called the 'true gobies,' and they share the defining synapomorphy of the pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc; this separates them from the Eleotridae (sleepers and gudgeons), whose pelvic fins remain separate.
The genus Gobiopterus is a small group of translucent, very small-bodied gobies distributed across South and Southeast Asia and into the Pacific. Several congeners occur in brackish or coastal-freshwater habitats, and the genus has historically been shuffled among older family arrangements; the current placement in Oxudercidae follows the modern molecular consensus. The species epithet stellatus is Latin for 'starred' or 'starred with spots,' presumably referring to pigmentation of the type specimens, though this goby is nearly unpigmented in life.
Morphology
Gobiopterus stellatus is a remarkably small fish, reaching maturity at approximately 0.5 in total length, placing it among the tiniest gobies anywhere in the world. The body is slender and almost entirely transparent or translucent, as is typical for the genus, with minimal melanophore pigmentation; the viscera may be visible through the body wall. The pelvic fins are fused to form the characteristic goby sucker disc — the clearest external marker that this is a true goby and not a gudgeon or sleeper.
Detailed morphological data beyond size and basic body form are sparse in the published literature. The translucent body, tiny size, and sucker disc are the most distinctive external features. No published account of secondary sexual dimorphism is available for this species, and data on fin-ray counts and detailed meristics are not captured in accessible sources.
Habitat
Gobiopterus stellatus is a freshwater species, recorded from Lake Lanigay (the type locality) in Albay Province on Luzon, and also from Lake Taal, one of the major crater lakes of Luzon. Both are warm, lowland freshwater bodies. Lake Taal sits within the Taal Volcano complex and has had a historically variable chemistry; Lake Lanigay is a small inland lake in the Bicol region.
The species is classified as demersal, living near or on the substrate rather than in open water. Beyond the basic freshwater lacustrine setting, detailed habitat data — substrate preference, depth range, vegetation association, water chemistry — have not been published in accessible sources. It may tolerate a degree of brackish influence given congeners' habits, but the FishBase record describes it specifically as a freshwater fish.
Feeding
No specific dietary study has been published for Gobiopterus stellatus. Inference from its tiny size, demersal habit, and the feeding ecology of the genus suggests it is a micro-predator, taking small invertebrates — zooplankton, tiny crustaceans, copepods, chironomid larvae and similar organisms — from the substrate and water column of its lake habitats.
Data on feeding in the aquarium are sparse; no reliable captive-husbandry record exists for this species. By analogy with congeners such as G. chuno, the glass goby, the extremely small mouth demands correspondingly tiny prey items — newly hatched brine shrimp and fine-grade live or frozen foods. A fish of this size cannot handle standard aquarium flake and is best regarded as needing micro-live or micro-frozen food to thrive.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been documented for Gobiopterus stellatus in the published literature. Inference from the genus and from the broader true-goby breeding guild points to a resident cave-spawner or substrate-spawner strategy: a male defends a small territory or shelter site and courts females, which enter to lay adhesive eggs.
No account of courtship display, mate recognition, or spawning site preferences has been recorded for this species. Given the extreme small size of adults, any shelter chosen would be correspondingly tiny — a crevice, shell, or pore in the substrate. This remains unconfirmed.
Breeding
No reliable captive-breeding record exists for Gobiopterus stellatus, and the genus Gobiopterus as a whole is described as extremely difficult to breed in the aquarium, with no successful captive-propagation protocol published. Based on the likely resident cave-spawner biology of its congeners, breeding would involve a female laying a small clutch of adhesive eggs within a sheltered site, with the male guarding and fanning the eggs until hatching.
The whole life cycle is presumed to be completed in fresh water, which in principle makes captive breeding conceivable, but the extraordinary small size of the fish, the specialised diet requirements, and the complete absence of published husbandry information make any breeding attempt highly experimental. No captive reproduction has been confirmed.
In the aquarium
Gobiopterus stellatus is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade by this name. Its tiny mature size of approximately 0.5 in means it is an extreme nano fish; any suitable aquarium would need to be a dedicated small species tank — no larger tankmates that could predate or outcompete it. The tank must be covered, as gobies are prone to jumping. Filtration should produce minimal current: a fish of this size is not built for strong flow.
Because it feeds exclusively on tiny live and frozen items — brine shrimp nauplii, copepods, and similar micro-foods — and because its care requirements are essentially undocumented, it is not appropriate for general hobby keeping at this time. Any specimens entering the trade would be wild-caught from Luzon; captive-bred stock does not exist. The related G. chuno (glass goby) has been kept with some success at similar parameters (73–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.0, light brackish water tolerated), and this may give a rough baseline, but G. stellatus should be treated as a species requiring expert-level care and dedicated research before purchase.
Conservation
Gobiopterus stellatus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated September 2020. The Data Deficient rating reflects that there is insufficient information on the species' population size, distribution, ecology, and the threats it faces to make a direct or indirect assessment of its extinction risk — not that it is known to be secure.
The species is a Luzon endemic, known from at most two lakes. Lake Taal, one of the recorded sites, lies within a volcanically active caldera and has undergone dramatic changes in water chemistry in historical times following eruptions; it also faces pressures from cage aquaculture and nutrient enrichment. Lake Lanigay is a small inland lake in a region of the Philippines that has experienced significant agricultural and land-use change. The combination of narrow endemism, small known range, and poorly documented status makes this species a candidate for proper survey and formal conservation assessment. No captive population exists, so wild fish are the only source if the species is to enter the aquarium trade, adding a further consideration if commercial collection were to occur.
