Gobiopterus chuno, the glass goby, is one of the smallest and most translucent true gobies in the world — a tiny, jewel-like fish of estuaries and tidal creeks across the Bay of Bengal that barely reaches 1.5 in and is so transparent its internal organs are visible through the skin. Like all true gobies it sits in the family Oxudercidae and carries the defining character of the group: pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine family; freshwater and brackish species like G. chuno are the exception, and this species is a specialist of brackish estuarine water that struggles if kept in plain fresh water. A resident cave-spawner with male parental care, it can be bred in the aquarium, and its near-invisibility in a planted brackish nano tank makes it a genuinely unusual species.

Taxonomy & naming

Gobiopterus chuno was first described by Francis Hamilton in 1822 as Gobius chuno, based on specimens collected from Bengal — a type locality that falls across what is today the border region of Bangladesh and India. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the international authority for valid fish names, places it in the genus Gobiopterus and the family Oxudercidae, the clade of true gobies that also includes the mudskippers and many familiar estuarine species. The Oxudercidae are the successors of the old Gobiinae, a subfamily that was reorganised as molecular work revealed the paraphyletic nature of the classic Gobius-centred grouping; G. chuno may appear in older literature under Gobionellidae or simply as a gobiid.

Gobiopterus is a small genus of dwarf, translucent estuarine gobies distributed across South and Southeast Asia. G. chuno is the type species of the genus and the most familiar member in the hobby. The family Oxudercidae defines the true gobies by the fusion of the pelvic fins into a cup-shaped sucker disc — the character that separates them from the superficially similar sleeper gobies (Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain separate. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine family; their occurrence in fresh and brackish water is secondary, and G. chuno is a specialist of the brackish transitional zone rather than a freshwater fish that tolerates salt.

Morphology

Gobiopterus chuno is strikingly small and translucent. Adults reach 1–1.5 in standard length, making them genuine dwarf gobies, and the body is so clear that the internal organs — gut, liver, swim bladder — are plainly visible, giving the fish its common name. The background colouration is colourless to faintly silvery, occasionally with scattered melanophores, and the eyes are relatively large and bright. The two dorsal fins and the rounded caudal fin are delicate and transparent.

The defining structural feature of the genus and family is the sucker disc: the pelvic fins are fully fused into a cup-shaped disc on the belly that the fish uses to anchor itself to hard surfaces against current. This character separates Gobiopterus and all true gobies from the eleotrids (sleepers and gudgeons), whose pelvic fins remain free. Males in breeding condition may show slightly more intense pigmentation than females, and the female's belly becomes visibly rounder when she is ripe with eggs, but the sexes are otherwise difficult to tell apart by external characters alone at this small size.

Habitat

In the wild, Gobiopterus chuno inhabits brackish estuaries, tidal creeks, mangrove margins and the lower reaches of coastal rivers across the Bay of Bengal region — Bangladesh, India, and Myanmar, with wider Indo-West Pacific records. These are warm, shallow environments (typically 75–82 °F) with measurable salinity, low flow in sheltered bays and channel margins, and substrates of fine silt or sand. The species is primarily an estuarine animal rather than a riverine one; it follows the brackish zone where freshwater river water mixes with tidal sea water, living in the upper centimetres of the water column and sheltering among plant roots, debris and crevices.

G. chuno tolerates reduced salinity and can penetrate into fresh water, but its performance in plain fresh water over time is poor, and aquarists who try to keep it in a freshwater community tank typically find it fares worse than in brackish conditions. The species is not amphidromous — it does not require the sea for larval development — and its whole reproductive cycle takes place in the estuarine zone.

Feeding

Gobiopterus chuno is a micro-predator. In the estuarine environment it picks at copepods, tiny crustaceans, insect larvae, daphnia and other zooplankton that drift or swim in the water column and among bottom debris. Its small mouth dictates correspondingly tiny prey items. Like most gobies it hunts by sight and is not an algae grazer or detritivore.

In the aquarium, live and frozen micro-foods are essential. Good staples include baby brine shrimp (nauplii), copepods, cyclops, daphnia and finely chopped bloodworm or white worm. Frozen versions of these are accepted by conditioned fish, but dried flake is typically ignored or rejected — a fish kept on flake alone will slowly starve. This is not an unusual quirk for a goby; it is a near-universal trait of small gobies and one of the first care failures. Providing a variety of small live and frozen foods is the single most important maintenance decision for this species.

Mating

Gobiopterus chuno is a resident brackish-water cave-spawner with genuine male parental care. It is not amphidromous: the larvae do not develop at sea, and the species can be bred in captivity without access to a marine phase — a significant practical advantage over many of the stream-dwelling gobies in this atlas. Breeding behaviour follows the pattern common to the small resident gobies of the Indo-Pacific: a dominant male claims a cave, crevice, shell or other enclosed site, defends it against rival males, and courts ripe females there.

In an appropriately furnished tank, pairs form naturally from a small group kept together. Courtship consists of fin displays and colour intensification by the male, who attempts to lure the female into the chosen cavity. A ripe female is identifiable by her visibly rounded belly; the transparency of these fish makes the distended ovaries clearly visible. Spawning takes place inside the cavity.

Breeding

The female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of the chosen cave or crevice. Once she has spawned she plays no further role; the male takes sole charge of the eggs, guarding the entrance to the cavity and fanning the clutch with his fins to oxygenate them and prevent fungal growth until they hatch. Incubation at aquarium temperatures (75–82 °F) is reported at approximately 5–6 days, after which the fry become free-swimming.

The newly hatched fry are extremely small and need correspondingly fine first foods — cultured infusoria, rotifers or commercial micro-food for the first days, progressing to copepod nauplii and baby brine shrimp as they grow. Because the parents are themselves tiny, separating the male and eggs into a dedicated rearing vessel once spawning is confirmed gives the best fry survival, though attentive males in a species tank with little competition can bring fry through without intervention. The species has been reported breeding in well-maintained aquaria and is tractable for those willing to provide appropriate brackish conditions and live micro-foods.

In the aquarium

Gobiopterus chuno is a specialist nano fish that rewards patience. A small brackish aquarium — even a well-filtered 5.5–10 US gal tank — suits a pair or a small group, but the water must be brackish: a specific gravity of around 1.004–1.010 (roughly 5–15 ppt salinity) is the target, produced by dissolving marine salt in dechlorinated water. Temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.0–8.0. The tank should have fine sand substrate, low to moderate water movement, and plenty of hiding sites — smooth-surfaced caves, short lengths of pipe, dense planting and leaf litter all suit the species' preference for shelter and cover. A tight-fitting lid is essential: like virtually all gobies, G. chuno is capable of jumping, and a small gap in the cover is enough for a fish this size to escape.

Because the fish is so transparent and so small, it is easy to miss in a busy aquarium. It shows better in a species tank or a very low-density brackish community with similarly sized, non-boisterous tank-mates. It is entirely peaceful toward fish it cannot swallow. The main maintenance demands are the brackish water (a freshwater community tank is not suitable), the live or frozen micro-food diet (flake will not sustain it), and water quality (like most small estuarine fish it is sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes). Meet these requirements and the glass goby is a hardy, long-lived and genuinely unusual nano fish that few hobbyists have seen in person.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Gobiopterus chuno as Least Concern in 2010. The species is widespread across the Bay of Bengal region — Bangladesh, India, and Myanmar — in estuarine and brackish coastal habitats that, though altered by coastal development, agriculture run-off and aquaculture in parts of the range, remain extensive enough to support stable populations. No major threats specific to the species have been identified, and no population trend was evaluated as declining.

The broader estuarine habitat the species depends on faces ongoing pressure from mangrove clearance, shrimp farming, pollution and sea-level related salinity change, and these drivers affect the whole coastal-water community of the Bay of Bengal region. G. chuno itself is of minor importance in the aquarium trade — it is available but uncommon compared to better-known brackish gobies — and collection pressure is not considered a conservation concern. Captive breeding is achievable and relieves any residual collection demand.
