Hypseleotris barrawayi, the Katherine gudgeon or Barraway's fish, is a small Australian sleeper — not a true goby — endemic to the upper Katherine River system of the Northern Territory. Like all members of the family Eleotridae, it carries its pelvic fins separate rather than fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that defines the true gobies (Gobiidae); that single character distinguishes the sleepers and gudgeons from the goby lineage, no matter what the hobby calls them. A range-restricted freshwater endemic with a maximum length of around 2.5 in, it inhabits quiet pools and stream backwaters and is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its narrow distribution within one river drainage. In the aquarium it is a cave-spawning micro-predator that rewards patient keepers who supply live and frozen foods, stable warm freshwater, and secure retreats.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypseleotris barrawayi was described by Hoese and Allen in 1982 and remains a valid species under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. It belongs to the family Eleotridae — the sleepers and gudgeons — which is the first thing to understand about this fish: it is not a true goby. The true gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, and Oxudercidae) have their pelvic fins fused into a cup-like sucker disc; the eleotrids keep theirs separate, making the distinction easy to spot on any specimen. The hobby routinely applies the word "goby" to gudgeons, but the families are sisters, not synonyms.

The genus Hypseleotris is a group of small Australian and New Guinean carp gudgeons, several of which have been confused or synonymised over the years. A 2023 revision of the northwest Australian Hypseleotris species by Hoese and colleagues confirmed H. barrawayi as a valid taxon, distinct from the widespread H. klunzingeri and related congeners. The specific epithet honours Sandy Barraway, a traditional owner of the Katherine region whose knowledge of the local fauna contributed to the understanding of the species.

Morphology

H. barrawayi is a small, slender gudgeon reaching a maximum of approximately 2.5 in standard length. The body is typically pale with distinct vertical bars and a pattern of dusky bars or rows of spots on the caudal fin; the dorsal fins carry pale blue, black, and red horizontal stripes, making the unpaired fins the most striking part of the fish. A dark bar at the base of the pectoral fin is a useful field mark. Meristically, FishBase records 6–8 dorsal spines, 9–11 dorsal soft rays, 1 anal spine, and 9–11 anal soft rays, with a vertebral count of 26–27 — figures consistent with the broader Hypseleotris radiation.

Sexual dimorphism in H. barrawayi has not been extensively documented in the literature, but related Hypseleotris species show males with somewhat brighter fin colouration and a tendency toward greater overall intensity of pigment during the breeding season. The separation of the pelvic fins — diagnostic of the Eleotridae — is easily confirmed on any adult specimen and immediately distinguishes it from true gobies.

Habitat

H. barrawayi is known only from the upper Katherine River system in the Northern Territory of Australia — a restricted range that forms the basis of its Near Threatened assessment. Within that drainage it occupies quiet freshwater pools and sheltered stream reaches rather than fast, open channels, often associating with submerged cover, marginal vegetation, and the calmer backwater habitats typical of monsoon-fed tropical rivers in the Top End.

FishBase records a pH of approximately 7.3 and moderate hardness (around 11.5 dH) for the species, consistent with the slightly alkaline, moderately mineralised waters of the Katherine River catchment. Water temperatures in the Top End follow a strong seasonal cycle driven by the wet and dry monsoon; daytime temperatures in the shallows range from around 72 °F in the cooler dry season to 82 °F or above during the wet, and these swings likely act as spawning cues. This is a strictly freshwater, non-amphidromous species.

Feeding

H. barrawayi is a micro-predator, as is characteristic of the Hypseleotris genus. Studies on closely related carp gudgeons document a diet of zooplankton, copepods, small crustaceans, benthic invertebrates, and insect larvae, with the balance shifting between planktonic and benthic prey depending on water level and seasonal prey availability.

In the aquarium this means live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and similar small invertebrate foods are the appropriate diet. H. barrawayi, like other eleotrids, will typically refuse or show little interest in dry flake, and a fish fed exclusively on flake tends to lose condition over time. Offering a varied rotation of frozen and occasional live foods is both the key to good health and a reliable way to condition a pair for breeding.

Mating

H. barrawayi is a resident freshwater cave-spawner in the manner typical of the Hypseleotris genus. As with the closely related H. compressa and other Australian carp gudgeons, breeding is seasonal, with territorial behaviour in males intensifying during the warmer months. A conditioned male claims and defends a cave, crevice, hollow, or overturned shell and courts females by displaying his fin colouration at the entrance.

Because the entire reproductive cycle takes place within fresh water — eggs, larvae, and juveniles all remain in the river system with no marine dispersal phase — H. barrawayi is a resident species that can in principle be bred in the aquarium. This distinguishes it sharply from the amphidromous stream gobies whose larvae must develop at sea and which are effectively impossible to raise in captivity.

Breeding

Breeding follows the eleotrid cave-spawning pattern documented for the genus: the female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on the ceiling or wall of the chosen cave or sheltered surface, and the male then takes sole charge, guarding the site and fanning the eggs with his fins until they hatch. In the related H. compressa, incubation lasts approximately 8–9 days at typical aquarium temperatures; H. barrawayi likely follows a similar timeline, though specific captive-breeding records for this species are sparse.

Breeders who have worked with other small Australian gudgeons report that the fry are small at hatching and require very fine first foods — infusoria or similar micro-foods — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and microworm. Because the male guards the eggs attentively and does not eat them, a well-set-up tank with ample cave sites can yield fry with minimal intervention, though separating the egg-laden cave to a dedicated rearing tank improves survival rates. Facts on captive breeding of H. barrawayi specifically are limited in the published record; the species is not commonly kept outside Australia.

In the aquarium

H. barrawayi is an uncommon species in the hobby outside its native Australia, where it occasionally appears in the hands of Australian native-fish keepers. As a small gudgeon reaching under 2.5 in, it suits a modest tank — 15–20 US gal is ample for a pair or small group — set up to replicate its natural habitat: stable, clean freshwater at 72–82 °F, a neutral to slightly alkaline pH around 7–7.5, moderate hardness, gentle filtration, and plenty of caves, crevices, and cover in the form of rocks, driftwood, or purpose-built ceramic retreats. A dark substrate and planted margins will reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.

Males are territorial toward one another, especially when caves are limited; providing one shelter per male reduces conflict. The species does not need and should not receive salt — it is a strictly freshwater fish with no brackish requirement. Diet must include live and frozen invertebrate foods; flake alone is insufficient. A covered tank is advisable, as most gudgeons are capable of jumping. This is not a fish for a beginner's community tank, but for the keeper prepared to meet its feeding and habitat requirements it is a rewarding and distinctively Australian subject.

Conservation

H. barrawayi is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List (2019 assessment), reflecting its restricted range: it is known only from the upper Katherine River system in the Northern Territory, making it one of several freshwater fishes in the Top End whose entire global population sits within a single catchment. Species with such narrow distributions are inherently vulnerable to any deterioration of that catchment, whether through changed hydrology, increased sedimentation, altered water temperature, invasive predators (notably the introduced gambusia in northern Australian waterways), or changes to the monsoon cycle.

The Katherine River and its tributaries lie partly within and adjacent to managed conservation lands, which affords some protection, but the catchment also supports tourism, agriculture, and the town of Katherine itself. Monitoring programs targeting range-restricted Northern Territory endemics are essential to understanding whether populations remain stable. As an uncommon species in the trade, H. barrawayi does not face meaningful pressure from commercial collection, but the small size of its range means any single catastrophic event — a chemical spill, a drought of unusual severity — could affect a significant proportion of the global population.
