Taxonomy & naming
Hypseleotris cyprinoides was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1837 and placed in a succession of genera before settling in Hypseleotris. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — places the species in the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, with the original combination now relegated to junior synonymy. The name cyprinoides means 'carp-like', a reference to the fish's moderately deep, compressed body and large, conspicuous scales that give it a superficial resemblance to small cyprinids.
The most important thing to understand about this fish taxonomically is what it is not. The true gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, and Oxudercidae) carry their paired pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc, an adaptation that lets them cling to rocks in swift currents. The sleepers and gudgeons — including all Hypseleotris — keep the pelvic fins separate, and that single character separates the two lineages cleanly. Although the hobby and many regional guides call it a 'goby', it belongs to the Eleotridae alongside the peacock gudgeon (Tateurndina ocellicauda) and the purple-spotted gudgeons (Mogurnda spp.) of Australasia, not to the true gobies of the Indo-Pacific streams. The name Hypseleotris leuciscus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
The tropical carp-gudgeon reaches up to 3 in standard length, making it a small to medium-sized eleotrid. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, with large, ctenoid scales and a blunt head. Colouration is variable across its wide range and with sex and breeding condition; males in colour typically display iridescent blue-green or golden-yellow flanks, with a pattern of spots or reticulations and brightly coloured fin margins, earning the trade name 'sunburst gudgeon' in some Australian populations. Females tend to be less intensely coloured and somewhat smaller.
The fin formula (7 dorsal spines, 8 soft dorsal rays, 1 anal spine, 9 anal soft rays) is typical of the genus. The pelvic fins sit close together but remain separate — the defining character of the Eleotridae — and there is no sucker disc. The species is euryhaline: it tolerates fresh, brackish, and briefly even marine water, and the gills can regulate across a wide salinity range, an adaptation to its amphidromous lifestyle and estuarine margins.
Habitat
Hypseleotris cyprinoides occupies the transition zone where freshwater streams and rivers meet the coast across the Indo-Pacific. It is most commonly found in shallow, vegetated margins — among fringing macrophytes, fallen branches and root masses — in the tidal reaches of rivers, estuarine channels, and coastal lagoons, as well as in fully fresh lowland streams. FishBase records it from fresh, brackish, and marine environments, reflecting the euryhaline tolerance that underwrites its amphidromous movement between fresh and salt water.
Preferred temperature is 72–82 °F, with a mean around 82 °F in localities surveyed by FishBase, consistent with a tropical species. The shallow, densely vegetated habitats it favours are highly productive in mosquito larvae and small aquatic invertebrates, which form its principal prey. Across its range it can be locally abundant in these marginal habitats, although formal abundance data are sparse — one reason the IUCN assigned it Data Deficient status in 2018.
Feeding
The tropical carp-gudgeon is a micro-predator, hunting by sight in shallow vegetated water. FishBase lists mosquito larvae and other insect larvae as principal prey items; it will also take small crustaceans, amphipods, and other tiny aquatic invertebrates. It is not a grazer or detritivore and does not take plant material.
In the aquarium this translates directly: it needs live and frozen foods — bloodworm, mosquito larvae, daphnia, brine shrimp, and similar small invertebrates. Like most eleotrids it often ignores or refuses dry flake food, and a fish kept exclusively on flake will gradually lose condition and colour. Conditioning for breeding, or simply maintaining colour and vigour, requires a regular diet of small, meaty live or frozen items. A larger individual may also prey on smaller fish within oral reach — worth bearing in mind when choosing tank companions.
Mating
Hypseleotris cyprinoides is an amphidromous species, and understanding its reproductive strategy is the single most important thing a prospective keeper needs to know. Spawning takes place in fresh or brackish water: a territorial male claims a crevice, cave, or sheltered surface and courts females there, intensifying his colour during the process. The female deposits adhesive eggs within the chosen retreat and the male guards them.
So far this resembles the resident cave-spawning gudgeons such as the peacock gudgeon. The crucial difference comes at hatching. The newly emerged larvae are tiny, pelagic, and immediately begin drifting downstream toward the sea — the same amphidromous strategy used by many Eleotris, Dormitator, Gobiomorphus, and the cling-gobies. Once in coastal or estuarine water, the larvae complete their post-larval development as marine plankton before recruiting back to fresh water as juveniles.
Breeding
Because the larval phase of Hypseleotris cyprinoides requires a marine or estuarine environment to complete development, captive breeding is rarely if ever achieved under normal aquarium conditions. A pair may spawn and the male will guard and fan the adhesive eggs until they hatch — this part of the cycle can occur in a freshwater or slightly brackish tank — but the tiny hatchlings need to drift to sea, and no standard home aquarium can replicate that transition. Reports of successful captive breeding are extraordinary and involve specialised facilities.
For practical purposes, therefore, this species should be treated as wild-collected. Hobbyists should seek out tank-raised or sustainably wild-sourced stock and not expect to raise fry from their own fish. The amphidromous biology is genuine and non-negotiable: unlike the peacock gudgeon and other resident eleotrids, the tropical carp-gudgeon cannot close its reproductive cycle in fresh water alone.
In the aquarium
The tropical carp-gudgeon is regarded as a hardy and adaptable aquarium fish within its environmental limits. A tank of at least 20 US gal suits a pair or a small group; fine gravel or sand is the preferred substrate, and the tank should be planted or provided with wood, rocks and caves to supply both cover and retreats for the territorial males. Temperature should be maintained in the 72–82 °F range; the species tolerates a wide pH range and does not require added salt, though as a euryhaline fish it will accept very slightly brackish water without harm.
Males become territorial when in breeding condition and will dispute ownership of caves and shelter, so multiple retreats spaced apart reduce aggression. The fish is an active, visible swimmer and shows best in a well-lit tank with contrasting dark substrate and green planting. The main care requirements are stable water quality, a varied live and frozen diet, and a covered tank — like most eleotrids it is a capable jumper. Do not expect to breed it in a standard home aquarium; the amphidromous larval stage means that commercial and research facilities are the practical source of any young fish.
Conservation
The IUCN assessed Hypseleotris cyprinoides as Data Deficient in November 2018 — the most recent assessment available. The designation reflects not demonstrated decline but the absence of sufficiently reliable data on population size, trend, or the true extent of any threats across its very large Indo-Pacific range. A species so widespread (East Africa through tropical Asia to Australia and the Pacific Islands) and so tolerant of euryhaline conditions is unlikely to be globally threatened, but pockets of coastal development, mangrove loss, and estuarine pollution could affect local populations whose larvae depend on estuarine nursery habitats.
Because the species is amphidromous and not meaningfully bred in captivity, aquarium trade specimens are wild-caught. Volumes traded appear modest compared with many cichlids or corydoras, and the species does not appear on any CITES appendix, but trade data for small eleotrids are sparse. Conserving the shallow vegetated margins and lower-river estuarine habitats on which this species depends is the most direct action available — habitats shared with a wide array of other Indo-Pacific freshwater fish.
