Oxyeleotris marmorata, the marble goby, is a sleeper — a member of the family Eleotridae and therefore not a true goby at all. The clearest proof is structural: a true goby carries its pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc; a sleeper keeps them separate, and Oxyeleotris marmorata wears this distinction plainly on its underside. Described by the Dutch naturalist Pieter Bleeker in 1852 from Sulawesi, the marble goby is a widespread benthic predator of freshwater streams and rivers across Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific, mottled in brown and cream like a sun-dappled riverbed. It is a nocturnal ambush hunter that lurks in caves and crevices, ignored by daylight and lethal to anything that ventures too close after dark. In the aquarium it is a resident cave-spawner with genuine male parental care — the whole cycle in fresh water — and an undemanding fish for the keeper who can meet its one non-negotiable requirement: live or frozen food.

Taxonomy & naming

Pieter Bleeker described this species as Eleotris marmorata in 1852 from material collected in Sulawesi (then Celebes), Indonesia. The specific epithet marmorata is the Latin past participle of marmorare, "to marble," and refers directly to the mottled, marbled brown-and-cream pattern that gives the fish its common name. The genus Oxyeleotris, erected by Bleeker himself, groups the larger Indo-Pacific sleepers, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — accepts Oxyeleotris marmorata as the current valid combination.

The fish sits firmly in the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, a group often marketed as gobies but distinct from the true gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) in one defining character: the pelvic fins remain separate rather than fusing into the sucker disc that defines the goby lineage. The old combination Eleotris marmorata appears in early literature and still surfaces in some trade catalogues; it refers to the same fish. No synonym confusion affects the current genus, and Oxyeleotris marmorata is the name used by both FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

The marble goby is a moderately large sleeper, typically reaching 3–4.5 in standard length in the aquarium, with a reported maximum of around 6 in. The body is cylindrical and somewhat compressed toward the tail, built for a life wedged into crevices and lying motionless on a sandy or gravel bottom. The coloration is the defining feature: a warm brown or khaki ground broken by irregular darker blotches and a fine pale marbling, highly variable between individuals and well matched to the dappled light of a shallow stream bottom.

The head is broad and somewhat flattened, with a large upturned mouth well suited to ambush predation, and the eyes sit high on the head. The two dorsal fins are separate. As noted for all Eleotridae, the pelvic fins are distinct and separate — they do not merge into a sucker disc — which distinguishes this fish from the true gobies at a glance. Mature males tend to be slightly larger than females and may develop a marginally larger head, but the dimorphism is subtle compared with many gobies and is not striking in the hand.

Habitat

Oxyeleotris marmorata is native to freshwater streams, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs from Sulawesi and the wider Indonesian archipelago through mainland Southeast Asia. It is a benthic species found along the bottom in clear to turbid waters, often sheltering under rocks, in root tangles, and in undercut banks by day and emerging at night to hunt.

The species is primarily freshwater but tolerates brackish conditions and is recorded in tidal reaches near estuaries. The preferred water parameters in the aquarium hobby closely match its native lowland tropical streams: temperature 72–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5. It is not a soft-blackwater specialist; moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water is appropriate, and the species does not require salt for long-term health even though it can tolerate it.

Feeding

The marble goby is a sit-and-wait micro-predator — a nocturnal ambush hunter that lies inert on the substrate or inside a cave until prey comes within striking range, then lunges with the broad, gape-heavy mouth. In the wild the diet consists of small crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, and small fish. In the aquarium that translates straightforwardly: bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, cyclops, mosquito larvae, and other small live or frozen invertebrates are accepted readily and should form the core of the diet.

The marble goby typically refuses dry flake food or accepts it only poorly, and a fish kept solely on pellets tends to lose condition over time. Live and frozen food are not optional extras but the main course. Larger individuals will readily take small fish, so tankmates must be sized carefully. Feeding is most reliably done after lights-out, when the fish's nocturnal instincts are engaged.

Mating

Oxyeleotris marmorata is a resident freshwater cave-spawner with male parental care — it does not drift larvae to the sea, and the whole breeding cycle takes place in fresh water. This makes it fundamentally different from the amphidromous cling-gobies and many stream gobies in this atlas, and is why it can be bred in a home aquarium when those species cannot. A sexually mature male claims a cave, crevice, or sheltered hollow and defends it against rival males. When a ripe female approaches, courtship follows: the male intensifies his markings, fans his fins, and leads the female into the cave.

Because the fish is nocturnal, much of its courtship and pre-spawning activity happens after lights-out and is rarely observed directly. The pair bond is temporary; once spawning is complete the female's role ends and the male assumes sole responsibility for the clutch.

Breeding

The female deposits adhesive eggs on the inner surface of the chosen cave — a rock overhang, a terracotta pot, a length of pipe — and then departs. The male remains to guard and fan the eggs, keeping them oxygenated and free of fungus, and repels intruders until the eggs hatch. This pattern of genuine male parental care is characteristic of the resident Eleotridae and contrasts sharply with the open-water egg-scattering of many cyprinids and with mouthbrooding cichlids.

Fry are tiny on hatching and require small first foods — infusoria, micro-worms, or similar micro-foods — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Successful captive breeding has been recorded, confirming that the cycle is completable in the aquarium. For higher fry survival, moving the egg-bearing cave to a separate rearing vessel after the female has spawned reduces predation risk, though the attentive male will often defend the clutch effectively if the tank is otherwise quiet.

In the aquarium

The marble goby is an undemanding fish in most respects but has two requirements that are non-negotiable. First, it must have live or frozen food — flake is not a substitute and a marble goby maintained on dry food alone will gradually decline. Second, it needs caves and hiding places: without them the fish stays hidden and stressed, rarely visible and never comfortable. A terracotta pot, a short length of PVC pipe, a cave formed from smooth rocks, or a hollow piece of driftwood all serve well.

Beyond those two points, care is straightforward. A tank in the 15–40 US gal range suits a single adult or a pair, with a tight-fitting lid (sleepers can and do jump), a soft or smooth substrate, moderate filtration, and stable temperature in the 72–79 °F range. It is a peaceful tankmate for fish too large to be swallowed but should not be housed with very small fish or invertebrates, which are simply prey items. Males can be territorial toward each other; a pair or a male with one or two females in a well-structured tank works well. The fish is most active at night and is best appreciated with a dim-light or red-light setup after dusk.

Conservation

Oxyeleotris marmorata has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category here; we record it as Not Evaluated rather than guess at a status. The species has a broad range across the freshwater systems of Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific, and it is widely encountered both in the wild and in the aquarium trade, where captive breeding is documented.

The combination of a broad native range, apparent environmental tolerance (including some brackish adaptability), and an established captive-breeding population suggests the species is not under immediate conservation pressure, though no formal population data are available. The principal threats to its lowland stream habitats across the region — deforestation, agricultural run-off, and reservoir construction — are common to many Southeast Asian freshwater fish. Buyers can seek captive-bred stock where available, which reduces demand on wild-caught specimens.
