Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides is a small sleeper gudgeon from the freshwater streams and rivers of Borneo and possibly New Guinea — and, like all sleepers, it is not a true goby. It belongs to the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, whose pelvic fins remain separate and never fuse into the cup-shaped sucker disc that characterises a real goby (Gobiidae). A benthic, cave-dwelling micro-predator first described by Pieter Bleeker in 1852 from Borneo, it is seldom exported but appears occasionally in specialist trade as a compact, shy occupant of small planted and rocky tanks. It has not been formally assessed by the IUCN, and its Bornean stream habitats face ongoing pressure from deforestation and damming.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1852, with Borneo — most likely a river system in what is now Brunei or Sarawak — as the type locality. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, places it in the genus Oxyeleotris, family Eleotridae. The original genus at description was likely Eleotris or a closely related catch-all, and it was subsequently reclassified into Oxyeleotris as the eleotrid lineage was revised; Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides is the current valid name.

The family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, is the key thing to understand about this fish. True gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, and Oxudercidae) have their pelvic fins fused into a muscular cup-shaped sucker disc that lets them cling to hard substrates in current. Sleepers and gudgeons keep their pelvic fins separate — the single most reliable character separating the two lineages. Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides thus sits in the same assemblage as the peacock gudgeon (Tateurndina) and the purple-spotted gudgeons (Mogurnda), not with the bumblebee gobies or the river gobies of the subfamily Gobionellinae.

Morphology

Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides is a small, elongate, benthic gudgeon that typically reaches 2–3 in standard length in the wild, with some records suggesting a maximum near 3 in; most trade specimens are smaller. The body is slender and somewhat compressed posteriorly, the head flattened and broad — typical of the sit-and-wait predator profile shared by the larger sleepers in the genus. The pelvic fins are clearly separate, not fused, distinguishing the fish from the true gobies at a glance.

The specific epithet urophthalmoides means 'resembling a tail-eye', from Greek uro- (tail), ophthalm- (eye), and -oides (resembling), referring to an eye-like marking or pattern on or near the caudal region. Live colouration is not well documented in the published literature; in life, small Oxyeleotris species typically show muted browns, greys and tawny tones with variable spotting or banding, providing camouflage against leaf litter and rock on the stream bed. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail for this species, though in related small eleotrids males are generally slightly larger and show more developed fins at maturity.

Habitat

In the wild, Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides occupies freshwater streams and rivers of Borneo, with a possible extension into New Guinea; precise range limits remain poorly documented given the limited taxonomic attention the species has received. It is a benthic species of clear, flowing lowland and foothill streams, resting among rocks, submerged wood and leaf litter on the stream bed, where its cryptic colouration provides concealment. The genus Oxyeleotris as a whole is characteristic of Sundaland (the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Java) and New Guinea, with some species also occurring in northern Australia.

Water parameters from FishBase indicate a tropical temperature range of 72–82 °F and slightly acidic to neutral pH (reported 6.0–7.5), with soft to moderately hard water. This is a strictly freshwater species — unlike some of its larger relatives, no tolerance of brackish or estuarine conditions is reported. The natural habitat is rivers with good water quality; the species is likely intolerant of turbid, polluted, or heavily silted conditions.

Feeding

Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides is a micro-predator. In the wild it hunts small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, copepods and tiny crustaceans from among the substrate, using the ambush strategy typical of benthic eleotrids: remaining motionless and striking at passing prey rather than actively pursuing it across open water. An algae-grazing component has also been noted in the FishBase account, suggesting opportunistic feeding on periphyton or algae-covered rock surfaces, though the primary diet is animal matter.

In the aquarium, live and frozen small foods are the key to maintaining the species in good condition. Bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, copepods and small crustaceans are all taken readily. As with most small eleotrids, the fish does not reliably accept dry flake and may refuse it altogether; a diet based primarily on live and frozen foods is strongly recommended. Feeding once or twice daily in small amounts suits the species well, and care should be taken not to leave uneaten food to foul the tank.

Mating

Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides is a resident freshwater cave-spawner, following the reproductive strategy typical of the smaller, non-amphidromous eleotrids. A conditioned male establishes and defends a cave, crevice, hollow log, or other enclosed shelter — or, in the aquarium, a coconut shell, flowerpot, or length of pipe — and courts ripe females from that site, displaying intensified colouration and fin posturing to drive off rival males and attract receptive females.

Because this is a strictly freshwater species whose larvae do not require a marine phase, both sexes remain in fresh water throughout the reproductive cycle. This distinguishes Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides from the amphidromous stream gobies (such as Stiphodon or Awaous), whose larvae must develop at sea and which cannot be bred in home aquariums. Pairs should be conditioned on live and frozen foods before a spawning attempt, and at least one good cave per male should be available in the aquarium.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity has been rarely reported for Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides, but the species' biology suggests it is achievable in a well-set-up aquarium. The female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or interior wall of the chosen cave; the male then takes sole charge, guarding the eggs and fanning them with his fins to maintain oxygen supply and prevent fungal infection until they hatch. This is genuine parental care, and the male may become territorial around the spawning site during this period.

Hatching takes place within the aquarium; because the species is not amphidromous, the larvae have no requirement for a marine phase and complete their development in fresh water. Newly hatched fry are small and should be offered appropriately sized first foods — infusoria, paramecia, or commercial micro-foods — before being moved on to newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm. The water temperature for breeding is reported around 75–79 °F. Captive breeding remains unusual and is not well documented in the hobby literature; most traded specimens are wild-collected.

In the aquarium

Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides is an uncommon species in the trade but one that suits a specialist keeper with experience of small, shy benthic fish. A covered tank of at least 23.5 in is appropriate for a pair or small group; the cover is important because eleotrids are capable jumpers and will exploit any gap. The tank should provide clean, well-oxygenated, moderately flowing fresh water at 72–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, with a sand or fine-gravel substrate and generous hiding structure — smooth rocks, driftwood, leaf litter, and several caves or hollow shelters. Dark substrate and low or diffuse lighting bring out the fish's natural behaviour and colouration.

Compatible tankmates should be peaceful, non-boisterous species that occupy different water levels and will not outcompete the gudgeon for food; small rasboras, danios, or other SE Asian stream fish of similar size work well. Males of the same species may spar over caves, so the tank should offer enough structure to break lines of sight. The fish is strictly freshwater and should not be kept with salt added. The main requirements are consistent water quality, live or frozen small foods, and adequate shelter; a fish denied hiding places will remain stressed and may refuse food. It is not a fish for a heavily stocked community or beginner setup, but for a patient keeper it is a rewarding and distinctive micro-predator.

Conservation

Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category here; we record it as Not Evaluated (NE). The species is restricted to freshwater streams in Borneo — one of the world's most threatened island ecosystems — where the primary pressures on freshwater biodiversity are deforestation, oil-palm and logging-road runoff, dam construction, and water abstraction for agriculture. Stream-dependent benthic species with limited ranges are particularly susceptible to sedimentation and changes in flow regime.

There is no indication that aquarium trade is a significant pressure on wild populations, given the species' obscurity in the hobby; most specimens traded appear to be wild-caught, since captive breeding is rarely achieved. The conservation priority for this and many poorly known Bornean eleotrids is improved survey coverage to establish range, abundance, and population trends — data that would allow a meaningful IUCN assessment. Until then, the precautionary approach for aquarists is to seek out captive-bred stock where available and to support habitat-conservation initiatives in Sundaland.
