Taxonomy & naming
Pseudogobius masago was described by the Japanese ichthyologist Tomiyama in 1936, with the type locality recorded from estuarine waters of Japan. It is placed in the genus Pseudogobius, a small Indo-West-Pacific goby genus whose members share the characteristically slender, cylindrical body and subdued colouration typical of small estuarine gobies. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names used here — lists the current combination as Pseudogobius masago (Tomiyama, 1936); no nomenclatural synonyms or subsequent generic transfers are recorded for this species, and the name has remained stable since its original description. Congeners such as P. malaya and P. septemradiatus share the same brackish-estuarine niche and similar morphology.
The family assignment is Oxudercidae — the family that holds most of the true gobies (formerly treated under Gobiidae in a broad sense) — and that placement matters for understanding what this fish is. True gobies, the Oxudercidae and their close relatives, are overwhelmingly marine; the freshwater and brackish representatives like Pseudogobius masago are the exception, specialist colonisers of tidal rivers, estuaries and coastal freshwater. The diagnostic feature of the group — the pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc — is present in Pseudogobius masago and is the quickest anatomical way to confirm it as a true goby rather than one of the sleeper gudgeons (Eleotridae), which keep the pelvic fins separate.
Morphology
Pseudogobius masago is a small goby reaching approximately 1–1.5 in standard length as an adult. The body is slender and cylindrical in the anterior half, tapering toward the caudal peduncle, with the flattened ventral profile typical of a fish that rests on or close to the substrate. Ground colour is pale buff to pale grey, marked with irregular darker blotches or indistinct banding that provides camouflage against sand and fine gravel in estuarine shallows. The fins are unspectacular — clear to faintly dusky — consistent with the low-contrast, substrate-resting lifestyle of small estuarine gobies in this genus.
The fused pelvic fins form the sucker disc characteristic of true gobies: on the ventral surface the two pelvic fins are joined at their inner margins to create a shallow cup that the fish can press against smooth stones or shells in tidal flow. The eyes are positioned high on the head, offering a wide field of view for a bottom-dwelling fish. Sexual dimorphism in this genus is modest; males in breeding condition may develop slightly more intense pigmentation and can be distinguished by gonadal examination, but the species is not as visually distinct between sexes as many aquarium gobies.
Habitat
Pseudogobius masago is an estuarine and tidal-river species, inhabiting the brackish interface between fresh water and the sea. It occupies tidal rivers, mangrove-fringed creeks, estuarine shallows and coastal lagoons across its Indo-West-Pacific range, from Japanese estuaries in the north through the Philippines and the Indonesian archipelago. Water conditions in these habitats are warm — temperatures typically 72–82 °F — with salinity varying tidally between roughly 5 and 20 parts per thousand and pH broadly neutral to slightly alkaline (around 7.0–8.0). Substrate is typically fine sand, mud or fine gravel in sheltered tidal margins.
This is not an amphidromous species: Pseudogobius masago does not send larvae to sea to develop as marine plankton before recruiting back into fresh or brackish water. The entire life cycle — spawning, egg development, larval settlement and adult residence — occurs within the estuarine zone. That residency is what makes the species capable of captive breeding, unlike the cling-gobies (Stiphodon, Sicyopterus) and other amphidromous gobies that are tied to the sea for larval development and cannot complete their cycle in an aquarium.
Feeding
Pseudogobius masago is a micro-predator. In the wild it forages in the estuarine substrate and water column for small crustaceans — copepods, ostracods, small amphipods — together with tiny insect larvae and other micro-invertebrates available in the brackish-tidal zone. It is a visual, active hunter rather than a detritus feeder or algae grazer.
In the aquarium, it requires live or frozen small foods and typically refuses dry flake or takes it only reluctantly. Bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, copepods and similarly sized frozen invertebrate foods suit it well. A fish kept exclusively on dry food tends to lose condition; offering live foods (especially cyclops and newly hatched brine shrimp) is important both for routine maintenance and for bringing a pair into breeding condition. Feeding is the single most common management failure with small estuarine gobies: they need meaty, small-particle food and a clear rejection of flake is normal, not a sign of illness.
Mating
Pseudogobius masago breeds as a resident cave/substrate spawner — a strategy sharply different from the amphidromous gobies whose larvae must develop at sea, and the reason this species can complete its breeding cycle in a brackish aquarium. Courtship follows the general pattern of small resident gobies: a mature male takes up a territory centred on a suitable spawning site — a rocky crevice, a half-buried shell, a flat stone overhang or any enclosed cavity on the substrate — and defends it against rival males while advertising to ripe females.
Courting males intensify their body pattern and make short, exaggerated fin displays toward approaching females, leading a receptive female into the chosen cavity to inspect the spawning surface. In a well-managed aquarium with adequate salinity and stable water quality, pairs will court and spawn without extraordinary intervention, provided that suitable caves or crevices are available and competition is not excessive. Males may court multiple females across a season if conditions are right.
Breeding
Once a female is led to the spawning site, she deposits adhesive eggs directly on the hard surface inside — the cave roof, a stone wall or shell interior — in a single layer. The female's role ends at spawning; from this point the male takes sole charge of parental care, guarding the clutch and actively fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygen circulation and remove debris, continuing until the eggs hatch. The complete breeding cycle occurs in brackish water; no marine larval phase is involved, which means hatching fry are potentially raisable in the same or an adjacent aquarium.
The newly hatched larvae are small and require appropriately sized first foods — infusoria-grade organisms or commercial micro-food in the first days, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. Brackish conditions must be maintained throughout for fry of this species; plain fresh water will compromise their development. The species is reported as only rarely available in the aquarium trade and is typically imported as wild-caught adults rather than as captive-bred stock, so detailed first-hand breeding accounts are sparse, but the reproductive biology is consistent with other resident Pseudogobius congeners.
In the aquarium
Pseudogobius masago is a nano-scale brackish goby suited to a small, species-focused or brackish-community aquarium. An adult at 1–1.5 in does not need a large tank, but the water must carry measurable salinity — a specific gravity of around 1.005–1.010 (roughly 7–13 ppt) is a reasonable starting point, and the fish is likely to fail slowly in plain fresh water no matter how otherwise correct the conditions are kept. Temperature should be warm and stable (72–82 °F) and pH broadly neutral to slightly alkaline (7.0–8.0). A cover is advisable: like most small gobies it is capable of jumping.
Decor should prioritise caves and hiding places — rock formations with crevices, half-shells, short lengths of pipe, or clay caves — since both resting and spawning depend on enclosed spaces. A sandy or fine-gravel substrate suits the fish's resting behaviour. Tankmates, if any, should be non-aggressive brackish species of comparable size; larger fish will stress or eat a 1 in goby, and the micro-predator diet requirement means it competes for the same small live and frozen foods most brackish community fish also prefer.
Pseudogobius masago is rarely seen in the trade, and imports when they occur consist of wild-caught adults from Southeast Asian collection points. Aquarists interested in this species should source it through specialist importers and be prepared to establish brackish conditions before the fish arrive. Its care requirements are not complicated, but the brackish salinity is non-negotiable and the diet of live or frozen micro-invertebrates is the other non-negotiable: these two facts account for the majority of husbandry difficulties with the species.
Conservation
Pseudogobius masago is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its wide Indo-West-Pacific range across tidal rivers and estuaries from Japan south through the Philippines and Indonesia.
The species occupies tidal rivers, estuaries and coastal margins — habitats under sustained pressure in parts of its range from industrial development, coastal reclamation, urban runoff, estuarine pollution and the destruction of mangrove systems that underpin the food web of inshore brackish environments. Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia all have significant ongoing coastal development pressures, though these localised pressures have not been found to threaten the species at a global level. Because Pseudogobius masago is rarely traded, its commercial exploitation is not thought to represent a significant threat.
