Taxonomy & naming
Redigobius balteatus was originally described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Christian Theodore Herre in 1935 under the name Vaimosa balteata, placing it in a genus that has since been treated as a synonym. The Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, places the species in the genus Redigobius and the family Oxudercidae — the true gobies and mudskippers. The original combination Vaimosa balteata Herre, 1935 is the basionym; the parentheses around the authority in the valid name signal that the species has been moved from its original genus since its first description.
Redigobius is a small Indo-Pacific genus of estuarine and freshwater gobies, and R. balteatus is its most widespread member. The fish sits firmly within the true gobies (suborder Gobioidei, family Oxudercidae), whose defining character is the fusion of the pelvic fins into a cup-like adhesive sucker disc — a structure used to cling to hard substrates in flowing water and that immediately separates the group from the sleeper gobies (Eleotridae), where the pelvis stays free. Multiple common names circulate for the species in the hobby and trade, including "girdled goby" (from the Latin balteus, a girdle or belt, referring to the banded pattern), "rhinohorn goby," and "skunk goby."
Morphology
Redigobius balteatus is a small goby: FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in, making it a nano-sized fish by any measure. The body is slender and slightly compressed, typical of an estuarine goby that needs to shelter among crevices, shells, and root tangles in the substrate. The pelvic fins are fully fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that is the hallmark of the true gobies, visible on the underside of the fish and used to anchor the animal on hard surfaces against current.
The coloration that gives the species its name is a series of darker saddle-like bars or bands across the body against a paler background — a pattern that breaks up the outline against rubble and gravel substrates in turbid estuarine water. The exact expression of banding varies with mood, substrate colour, and condition. Sexual dimorphism is relatively subtle in this species, though males in breeding condition may intensify their patterning and darken during courtship and territorial display.
Habitat
Redigobius balteatus is an Indo-Pacific species of broad distribution, recorded from Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Micronesia, and the Indian Ocean coast of Africa from Mozambique and Madagascar to Mayotte. Across this range it occupies coastal habitats: estuaries, tidal creeks, mangrove-fringed shores, lower reaches of rivers and streams, and the brackish-freshwater transition zones where rivers meet the sea. FishBase notes depth records of 0–16 ft in marine and brackish coastal waters, with incursions into fresh water in the lower reaches of streams.
This is not a species of soft, acidic blackwater or fast montane torrents. Its natural environment is warm, turbid, often silty estuarine and tidal water with a mix of hard substrates, shell grit, roots, wood debris, and crevices that provide shelter. Temperatures across its range align with tropical coastal conditions: FishBase gives 77–82 °F as the ambient range, with a mean of around 83 °F. The species is at home in brackish conditions and, while it can enter fresher water, it is not well adapted to the fully softwater freshwater tanks most hobbyists default to.
Feeding
Redigobius balteatus is a micro-predator. In the wild it forages for small aquatic invertebrates among the substrate — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, zooplankton, and other small benthic organisms typical of the estuarine and tidal-stream environments it inhabits. Its small mouth and benthic lifestyle point to picking prey from or just above the substrate rather than open-water pursuit.
In the aquarium it does best on a diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, bosmids, mosquito larvae and other fine invertebrate material. Aquarium accounts note that specimens can be slow and selective feeders, often preferring live offerings initially and remaining reluctant to accept dry flake; protein-rich sinking prepared foods may be taken as a supplement but should not be relied on as the staple. Small daily portions match the species' unhurried, bottom-oriented foraging style better than infrequent large feeds.
Mating
Redigobius balteatus is a cave or substrate spawner, following the resident strategy used by many small estuarine and freshwater gobies of the Indo-Pacific. In the aquarium, a conditioned male establishes and defends a shelter — a cave, crevice, shell, or any suitable hollow in the substrate — and uses it as both a territory and a spawning site. Courtship involves intensification of the male's banding pattern and fin displays directed at ripe females.
Few detailed accounts of the courtship sequence exist in the aquarium literature, but the general pattern observed in small Redigobius and allied estuarine gobies is one of male site-fidelity and cave-based pair formation: the male invites or coaxes a female into the spawning shelter and the pair spawn there. The brackish-water preference means that conditioning pairs in a dedicated brackish setup, with appropriate shelter, fine substrate, and live-food conditioning, is more likely to produce spawning behaviour than keeping the fish in pure freshwater.
Breeding
Aquarium breeding reports for Redigobius balteatus are scarce, but the reproductive strategy is established: the species is a cave spawner, laying adhesive eggs on the walls or ceiling of a chosen shelter where they are guarded and fanned by the male. The incubation period is short — eggs hatch in approximately 3–4 days under warm conditions. After hatching, however, the larvae are tiny (around 0.5 in) and pelagic, drifting freely in the water column rather than settling immediately.
This pelagic larval phase makes rearing extremely difficult in the home aquarium. Even where a pair spawns and the male successfully guards the clutch to hatching, the minuscule planktonic larvae require infusoria or equivalent first foods of very fine particle size and high density, and survival rates in most aquarium setups are very low. This situation parallels — though is not fully equivalent to — the amphidromous life cycle of stream gobies like Stiphodon and Sicyopterus, where larvae are swept to sea and return as juveniles; in Redigobius balteatus the larvae appear to develop in the water column and the full trajectory of their early life in brackish and marine environments is not fully documented. Hobbyists should treat the species as effectively very difficult to breed to the juvenile stage.
In the aquarium
Redigobius balteatus is an occasional choice among hobbyists who seek out small estuarine gobies, but it is not a species for the standard freshwater community tank. Its most important care requirement is brackish water: aquarium accounts recommend a specific gravity equivalent to roughly 1 tablespoon of marine salt per 2.5 US gal (approximately SG 1.003–1.005) as a minimum, with the fish reportedly faring poorly in purely fresh water over time. Water temperatures in the 72–79 °F range suit it well, with a pH of 6.5–8.0 and medium-hard to hard water chemistry.
The tank should provide fine or mixed substrate, caves and crevices for shelter and potential spawning, and a gentle current for oxygenation. Because the fish is small (under 1.5 in) and somewhat secretive, it is easily bullied or overlooked; a dedicated small brackish species tank with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates — or kept alone as a pair or small group — suits it better than a busy community. Hardy salt-tolerant plants (Java fern, Vallisneria, or mangrove propagules) can be used for cover. The fish is small enough to escape through gaps, so a well-covered tank is necessary. Diet of live and frozen small invertebrates is essential; do not rely on dry flake. A 40-litre or larger brackish setup with adequate filtration and good water movement is a reasonable minimum.
Conservation
Redigobius balteatus is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, a status consistent with its broad Indo-Pacific distribution across many countries and habitat types. A species that occupies estuaries and coastal transition zones across dozens of island and continental coastlines from Africa to the Pacific is inherently less susceptible to regional extinction than a narrow-range stream endemic, and the fish appears to be common throughout much of its range.
The primary pressures on estuarine gobies in general are coastal development, mangrove clearance, water pollution, and sedimentation of the brackish transition habitats they depend on. For a widely distributed species like R. balteatus, these pressures are real but diffuse rather than existential at the species level. The aquarium trade in this species is modest; it is collected from the wild in parts of its range but does not appear to be a focus of intensive collection. Because captive breeding to the juvenile stage is very difficult due to the pelagic larval phase, essentially all aquarium specimens are wild-caught, which means buyers should be aware that the fish has a supply-chain impact even when small. Overall, however, the species' broad distribution keeps its conservation outlook stable.
