Taxonomy & naming
Redigobius bikolanus was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1927, originally under the name Gobius bikolanus, from specimens collected in the Bikol (Bicol) region of Luzon in the Philippines — the source of the specific epithet. It was later transferred to the genus Redigobius, a small Indo-Pacific genus of estuarine gobies placed in the family Oxudercidae by the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Older literature and databases may list the species under Gobius, Vaimosa, or Sicyopus, synonyms that belong to earlier, broader classifications since dissolved.
The genus Redigobius as currently defined holds roughly ten valid species, all small, euryhaline fish of coastal Southeast Asia and the Indo-West Pacific. The family Oxudercidae — the true gobies — is united by the fusion of the pelvic fins into a cup-like adhesive sucker disc, a character absent in the superficially similar sleeper gobies (Eleotridae) such as the peacock gudgeon. Gobies as a whole are overwhelmingly marine; species tolerant of fresh water, like R. bikolanus, are a minority within a predominantly saltwater family.
Morphology
Redigobius bikolanus is a small, slender goby, with adults reportedly reaching around 1–1.5 in in total length. The body is pale to buff, overlaid with a pattern of irregular brownish speckling and blotching along the flanks — a cryptic livery suited to the sandy and muddy substrates of shallow coastal habitats. The dorsal surface is typically darker; the underside is pale.
The diagnostic goby character is present: the pelvic fins are fully fused into a concave disc on the underside of the body, forming the adhesive sucker that the fish uses to anchor itself on rocks, glass, and hard substrate in flowing or surge-swept water. This disc clearly distinguishes Redigobius from the sleepers. The eyes are set high on the head, the mouth terminal and relatively small, suited to picking small invertebrates from the substrate. Detailed fin-ray and meristic data are sparse in the accessible literature, and the species' full morphological variation across its range is not well documented.
Habitat
Redigobius bikolanus inhabits the shallow, coastal lowland zone of the Philippines and the broader Indo-West Pacific region — estuaries, tidal creek mouths, mangrove margins, and the lower reaches of coastal streams where fresh and salt water mix. It is euryhaline, tolerating a wide range of salinities from essentially fresh to full brackish, and in the wild it moves between fresh, brackish, and low-salinity marine water depending on tidal conditions and seasonal flow.
The typical microhabitat is shallow, often muddy or sandy-bottomed, with emergent vegetation and detritus. Water temperatures in the tropical coastal lowlands it inhabits are warm year-round, generally in the range of 75–86 °F, with pH close to neutral reflecting the mix of river and seawater. This is not a fish of fast, clear upland streams; it is a warm, low-gradient, tidally influenced coastal specialist.
Feeding
Redigobius bikolanus is a micro-predator, taking small invertebrates from the substrate and water column. In the wild the diet consists of small crustaceans, copepods, insect larvae, worms, and other benthic invertebrates picked from the mud, sand, and detritus of the estuarine floor. It is not a herbivore or algae grazer.
In the aquarium it should be offered small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, copepods, and similarly sized meaty items. Like most small gobies, it typically ignores or takes only poorly to dry flake, and a diet restricted to processed foods leads to poor condition and faded colour. Feeding with live or frozen invertebrates is the key to keeping this fish well.
Mating
Redigobius bikolanus belongs to the resident cave-spawning guild of small gobies — those that complete their entire reproductive cycle in fresh or brackish water without an obligate marine larval stage. This places it among the species that CAN be bred in captivity, in contrast to the amphidromous gobies (such as Stiphodon and Sicyopterus) whose larvae must reach the sea. A conditioned male takes up territory around a crevice, rock undercut, or hard-sided cavity and courts females with fin displays and lateral posturing.
Females in breeding condition are typically fuller-bodied than males; in many small Redigobius the sexes are otherwise similar in colour, without the strong sexual dimorphism seen in some goby genera. The precise mating ritual for this species has not been described in detail in the accessible scientific literature, but the pattern consistent with the genus and family is courtship at a defended cavity.
Breeding
Redigobius bikolanus is a substrate/cave spawner: the pair spawns inside or underneath a hard structure — a rock crevice, a coconut-shell half, an overturned clay pot, or similar refuge — where the female lays a clutch of small adhesive eggs on the ceiling or wall of the chosen site. The male then takes sole charge of the brood, guarding the entrance and fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins to keep them clean and oxygenated until they hatch. This is genuine parental care, and the whole cycle occurs in fresh to brackish water.
Because the larvae do not require a marine dispersal phase, the species is potentially achievable in the home aquarium given appropriate conditions: a tank with slightly brackish water, hard substrate with crevices, stable warm temperatures, and a well-conditioned pair fed on live and frozen foods. Detailed accounts of captive breeding in the hobby literature are sparse, and the species is infrequently traded. Fry require very small first foods — freshly hatched brine shrimp, copepod nauplii, or similar — as with most small gobies.
In the aquarium
Redigobius bikolanus is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby and is data-sparse in husbandry literature, but its biology points to a manageable small goby for the specialist. A modest tank — 23.5 in or larger — with a sand or fine-gravel substrate, a scattering of smooth stones, crevices or small caves, and minimal flow is the right starting point. The sucker disc means it can anchor on glass and hard decor in gentle current, but it is not a strong-flow species.
Salinity is the key variable: this is a euryhaline fish from tidal and estuarine habitats, and it almost certainly does best with a small addition of marine salt — roughly 1–3 ppt, a low-brackish specific gravity of around 1.002–1.005 — rather than in fully fresh water. It should not be kept with fish that require soft acidic fresh water. The tank must be tightly covered: like most gobies it can and does jump. Males may spar over territory and caves; provide multiple hiding spots to reduce conflict. Diet must be live or frozen invertebrates; dry food alone is not adequate. Because the species is not commercially bred in quantity, most specimens available are wild-caught.
Conservation
Redigobius bikolanus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated here. Data on population size, range extent, and trend are sparse across the literature. The species' apparent tolerance of brackish and estuarine conditions may offer some resilience to freshwater habitat degradation, but estuarine and mangrove habitats in the Philippines and Southeast Asia face severe pressures: coastal development, reclamation, pollution from agriculture and aquaculture, and mangrove clearance. A euryhaline estuarine goby spread across the coastal Philippines and Indo-Pacific is less immediately vulnerable than a narrow island endemic, but formal assessment is absent.
Because captive propagation of this species is essentially unknown in the hobby, the aquarium trade's supply depends on wild collection. Demand is low enough that the species has not attracted the conservation scrutiny given to more popular estuarine and river gobies. Its formal conservation status should be read as absent rather than reassuring.
