Taxonomy & naming
Schismatogobius ampluvinculus was described by H.-C. Chen and M. Kottelat in 2003, from material originally collected in the Jinglun River, Taitung County, southeastern Taiwan. Earlier specimens from the same region had been treated under the name Chen, Shao & Fang, 1995 (as recorded on GBIF), but the valid authorship currently attributed on FishBase and GBIF is Chen & Kottelat, 2003. The Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — places the genus Schismatogobius in the family Oxudercidae, the expanded goby family that incorporates the former Gobiidae core groups following recent molecular revisions of the Gobioidei.
Schismatogobius is a small genus of amphidromous stream gobies distributed across the Indo-Pacific, placed in the subfamily Sicydiinae alongside the closely related cling-gobies Stiphodon, Sicyopterus and Sicyopus. All share the amphidromous life history — freshwater-breeding adults, marine larval phase — and the fused pelvic disc characteristic of the true gobies. The epithet ampluvinculus is Latin and refers to a distinctive body feature; the genus name Schismatogobius derives from the Greek schisma (a cleft or split) combined with gobius (goby), likely alluding to the divided pelvic structure found in early taxonomic descriptions of the group.
Morphology
Schismatogobius ampluvinculus is an exceptionally small goby: FishBase records a maximum of 1 in standard length for males and unsexed individuals, and 1 in SL for females — placing it among the smallest vertebrates regularly encountered in the freshwater hobby. The body is elongate, somewhat cylindrical, and the fish is well camouflaged, with a mottled brown-to-tan ground colour overlaid with darker blotches and bars that shift with the fish's surroundings and mood, giving rise to its common name. It is capable of rapid, striking colour changes — a trait noted in care accounts and particularly pronounced during territorial or courtship encounters.
As a true member of Oxudercidae, Schismatogobius ampluvinculus bears the fused pelvic fins that form the cup-shaped sucker disc — the anatomical character that definitively separates the true gobies from the sleepers (Eleotridae) and gudgeons, whose pelvic fins remain free. Two separate dorsal fins are present, as in all gobies. The pectoral fins are large relative to body size, and the species exhibits a characteristic pectoral fin-fluttering behaviour noted in FishBase records, likely used in social signalling. Sexual dimorphism is subtle at this small size, females being marginally smaller and fuller-bodied than males.
Habitat
This species inhabits the lower freshwater reaches of short coastal streams, recorded from sites 164–2625 ft upstream from the upper limit of tidal fluctuation. The Jinglun River in Taitung County, Taiwan is the type locality; additional records exist from Jupung Brook and Luliao Brook in Pingtung County, also in southeastern Taiwan, as well as from Japan and the Philippines. These are fast, clear, rocky-bottomed montane streams draining rapidly to the coast — characteristic habitat for amphidromous sicydiine gobies.
Water conditions in such streams are typically cool, well-oxygenated, and of moderate to alkaline pH, reflecting the geology of the coastal ranges they drain. FishBase records the habitat as temperate freshwater, consistent with the subtropical climate of southeastern Taiwan, where water temperatures range roughly in the 75–82 °F band during warmer months. Aquarium care sources suggest a temperature range of 75–82 °F and a pH of 7.5–8.5 in captivity. This is not a lowland blackwater fish, nor a soft-acidic tropical species: it belongs to the well-lit, flowing rocky stream environment of the western Pacific coast.
Feeding
Schismatogobius ampluvinculus is a carnivorous micro-predator. In its native rocky streams it picks small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and micro-crustaceans from the substrate and water column. The diet in captivity should mirror that natural regime: live and frozen foods are strongly preferred over dry alternatives. Suitable items include frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and mosquito larvae; very small sinking micro-pellets or granules may eventually be accepted with time and patience, but this species — like most stream gobies — is unlikely to fare well on flake food alone.
Given its tiny adult size, all food items should be appropriately small. Overfeeding dry food that goes uneaten in a high-flow tank can rapidly degrade water quality. Offering small amounts of live or thawed frozen food daily, or several times per week, is the recommended approach and keeps the fish in good condition and colour.
Mating
Schismatogobius ampluvinculus follows the amphidromous mating strategy characteristic of the Sicydiinae. Adults are sexually mature in freshwater streams; at spawning time the male selects and defends a site on the underside of a rock or within a crevice and courts females in the stream current. Courtship involves colour intensification and the characteristic pectoral-fin fluttering behaviour noted in field observations, used both for communication and display. Females assess the male's site and condition before entering to spawn.
The process of bringing males and females into spawning condition in captivity — with adequate live food, flow, and territory structure — is achievable; reports indicate eggs may even be deposited in aquarium conditions. However, completing the reproductive cycle beyond the egg stage is not feasible without access to marine water, as explained in the Breeding section.
Breeding
Schismatogobius ampluvinculus is amphidromous, and this fact defines everything about its captive breeding potential. The male guards adhesive eggs on the underside of a stone or in a rocky crevice in freshwater — genuine parental care — fanning and protecting the clutch until the tiny larvae hatch. At that point, the larvae must drift downstream to the sea to develop as marine plankton; only after that marine phase do the post-larvae return to fresh water as juveniles and migrate upriver to adult habitat, sometimes ascending rapids using the pelvic sucker disc.
In a home aquarium, the larvae simply cannot complete their marine developmental phase. There are no successful captive-breeding reports for this species. It is effectively impossible to breed in the home aquarium, and all specimens available in the trade are wild-collected from their native streams. This is not a limitation of husbandry skill — it is a fixed biological requirement shared by all amphidromous sicydiine gobies. Keepers should be aware that purchasing this species contributes to wild collection pressure, and should seek out reputable suppliers who source responsibly.
In the aquarium
Schismatogobius ampluvinculus is a demanding but fascinating nano-goby for the specialist. Its tiny adult size — under 1 in — means it can be kept in a relatively small tank, but the tank must be set up with real care for its ecology: a sandy or fine-gravel substrate mixed with smooth rounded pebbles and larger stones, with caves and overhangs provided by flat rocks or ceramic tiles (which replicate the underside-of-stone spawning site and resting areas). Critically, the tank must have a powerhead or canister filter outlet arranged to produce moderate to strong water flow through a portion of the tank — a static, tropical community aquarium setup is wrong for this fish.
Water parameters should reflect the cool-to-warm subtropical stream conditions of its range: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.5–8.5, well-oxygenated and clean. This species is peaceful toward dissimilar tank mates and is described as suitable for a community of small, non-aggressive fishes, but it will likely be outcompeted for food by faster or larger species. A species tank or a biotope-style layout with small co-inhabitants from the same region and ecological niche is ideal. The tank must be tightly covered: like nearly all gobies, this species will jump. Diet must consist primarily of small live and frozen foods; flake is generally refused or ignored. Because all available fish are wild-collected, particular attention to water quality and acclimatisation on arrival is warranted.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Schismatogobius ampluvinculus in August 2020 and assigned it a status of Data Deficient — meaning insufficient information exists to assign a category on the threatened/non-threatened spectrum. The assessment notes a need for research into population status, life history, ecology, use, trade, and threats. No specific conservation measures are documented.
The species has a restricted and fragmented range across southeastern Taiwan and scattered Pacific island localities. Like all small, amphidromous stream endemics, it is inherently vulnerable to the pressures that affect small coastal watersheds: dam construction interrupting larval drift pathways, water abstraction, riparian degradation, and agricultural run-off. Because all aquarium specimens are wild-collected — captive breeding being impossible — any sustained commercial collection could put localised pressure on populations in accessible streams. The Data Deficient status reflects genuine uncertainty about how resilient those populations are, and the species warrants monitoring as the aquarium trade in small amphidromous gobies grows.
