Schismatogobius roxasi was described by Albert William Herre in 1936 from the Philippine Islands; the precise type locality is not recorded in publicly indexed sources. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — the authority for valid names — lists it as a valid species within the genus Schismatogobius, erected by Weber and de Beaufort in 1916. No synonyms are currently known.
The genus Schismatogobius is placed within the family Oxudercidae, the true gobies. This is a critical distinction: gobies are overwhelmingly a marine lineage, and the presence of pelvic fins fused into a cup-like sucker disc is the defining character of the true gobies, separating them from the sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain separate. Schismatogobius roxasi is therefore a real goby, not a gudgeon. The genus is closely allied with the Sicydiinae, the amphidromous cling-gobies of Asian and Pacific streams, and shares their obligate life-history strategy.
Morphology
Schismatogobius roxasi is a small, slender goby typical of the genus. Published size data for this specific species are sparse, but Schismatogobius species are generally small, with adults in the range of roughly 1.5–3 in standard length. The body is somewhat elongate and compressed, adapted to fast-flowing stream habitats. Like all true gobies, the pelvic fins are fused into a sucker disc on the underside of the body — this is the most reliable field character distinguishing the genus from superficially similar sleepers or gudgeons found in the same streams.
Detailed colour pattern descriptions for S. roxasi are not documented in sources accessible for this entry. Across the genus, species tend to be pale or cryptically mottled, often with small dark markings suited to life on or near the substrate of clear, gravel-bedded streams. Sexual dimorphism may be present but has not been well described for this species.
Habitat

Precise water chemistry data for this species are not available, but the genus generally inhabits rivers draining directly to the sea on tropical and subtropical island systems, meaning salinity transitions occur in the lower reaches near the river mouth.
Feeding
Schismatogobius roxasi is a micro-predator. Like other members of the genus, it feeds on small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, copepods, amphipods, tiny crustaceans, and similar benthic prey found among the substrate of fast-flowing streams. It hunts by sight and opportunism among the rocks and gravel of stream beds.
In the rare event that this species is kept in an aquarium, it should be offered small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and small insect larvae. It is unlikely to accept dry flake or pellet foods readily. The fish's natural diet is tied to the invertebrate community of fast-running, well-oxygenated streams, and its feeding behaviour reflects that specialisation.
Mating
Schismatogobius roxasi, like all members of the genus, is an amphidromous species. Adults are permanent residents of freshwater streams, and courtship and egg deposition take place in fresh water. Males establish and defend a territory around a suitable spawning site — typically a crevice, underside of a flat stone, or sheltered cavity among rocks in the stream — and court females through fin displays and colour intensification.
Because the larvae that hatch from the eggs must be swept downstream to the sea to complete their development, recruitment into the adult freshwater population depends on marine larval survival and the ability of post-larvae to locate and ascend suitable rivers. This diadromous strategy is obligate: it cannot be replicated in the aquarium.
Breeding
Breeding follows the amphidromous pattern shared by Schismatogobius and its close relatives in the Sicydiinae. The female lays adhesive eggs on the underside of a rock or in a sheltered cavity in the stream bed, and the male guards and fans the eggs until they hatch. After hatching, the tiny larvae are carried downstream by current to the sea, where they spend a period developing as marine plankton before the post-larvae migrate back upriver to recruit into the freshwater adult population.
This obligate larval marine phase means that Schismatogobius roxasi cannot be bred in a home aquarium. The marine development step cannot be reproduced in captivity without specialist facilities, and even then the process has not been achieved for this species. Any individuals encountered in the trade are wild-collected. Prospective keepers should bear in mind the conservation implications of that wild origin, particularly for a species with a restricted island distribution.
In the aquarium
Schismatogobius roxasi is essentially unavailable in the aquarium trade and should be considered a specialist fish even if encountered. It requires fast-flowing, well-oxygenated fresh water — a strong current, ample surface agitation, and a substrate of cobbles, pebbles, or gravel that mimics its native stream environment. The tank must be covered: gobies of this kind are capable jumpers, and a gap around filter pipes or cables is enough for an escape.
Because it is amphidromous and wild-collected, keeping it in an aquarium raises meaningful conservation considerations for what is likely a range-restricted Philippine endemic. Tankmates should be chosen carefully — only species that tolerate or require the same high-flow conditions are appropriate, and the fish should not be mixed with large or predatory species. Diet should be small live or frozen invertebrate foods exclusively; dry foods are unlikely to be accepted. Providing flat stones and rock crevices will allow the fish to behave naturally and reduce stress.
Conservation
Schismatogobius roxasi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status; we record it as Not Evaluated rather than assign a category without evidence. The species is a Philippine island endemic with a restricted range, a profile that in principle creates vulnerability to habitat degradation, watershed modification, and introduced species — pressures that affect freshwater fish across the Philippine archipelago.
Amphidromous species face a further threat not shared by fully freshwater fish: dams and weirs sever the marine-to-freshwater recruitment pathway, preventing post-larvae from ascending rivers to reach adult habitat. Because this species is wild-collected — it cannot be bred in captivity — any trade demand draws directly on wild populations. Given the sparse scientific documentation of this species, a precautionary approach is warranted.
