Taxonomy & naming
Sicyopus cebuensis was described by Maeda and Tan in 2013 from specimens collected on Cebu Island, Philippines. The Catalog of Fishes places the genus Sicyopus in the family Oxudercidae and the subfamily Sicydiinae — the cling-gobies or neon gobies, a group of freshwater-resident, marine-larval amphidromous gobies widespread across Indo-Pacific island streams. The species epithet cebuensis simply means 'from Cebu', indicating the island of its type locality.
This is a true goby. The gobies (families Gobiidae and Oxudercidae) are characterized by pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc on the underside of the fish — a structure absent from the sleeper gobies (Eleotridae) and their allies. In the Sicydiinae, this disc also allows the fish to cling to and climb rocks in fast-flowing water, and post-larvae returning from the sea can scale waterfalls using it. The broader goby lineage is overwhelmingly marine; the freshwater Sicydiinae represent a specialist adaptive radiation into upland streams.
GBIF records list an older combination attributed to Chen and Shao (1998), which likely refers to a prior description of related Philippine material; Maeda and Tan's 2013 paper is the authority for the valid name Sicyopus cebuensis as currently accepted by the Catalog of Fishes. No synonyms are in common use.
Morphology
Sicyopus cebuensis is a very small goby, reaching approximately 1.5 in in standard length (SL), with females marginally larger than males at maximum size. Like all members of the subfamily Sicydiinae, it has the characteristic blunt head, large eyes, and robust first dorsal fin of the cling-gobies, and the fused pelvic fins form a well-developed adhesive disc that anchors it against the current in fast-flowing water.
Detailed coloration data from the field is limited, but Sicyopus species as a group tend to show vivid or contrasting colour patterns on the males, often with orange, red or iridescent markings on the fins. Sexual dimorphism in the Sicydiinae commonly manifests in more elaborate fin coloration and extension in males. The small overall size — comfortably within the nano range — is typical for high-gradient island-stream gobies, which need a streamlined, low-mass body to hold position in strong current.
Habitat
Sicyopus cebuensis is known from Uling Brook in the upper Naga River basin on Cebu Island, a clear, fast-flowing headwater stream above a natural waterfall barrier. The habitat is typical of the Sicydiinae: highly oxygenated, cool to warm running water (approximately 72–82 °F) over rock and cobble substrate in forested upland terrain, with minimal sediment load and stable, near-neutral pH (around 6.5–7.5). The fish is rheophilic — it requires strong current and will not thrive in still or sluggish water.
Being above a waterfall is significant: the barrier prevents upstream immigration by most freshwater predatory fish, and post-larval Sicyopus climb the falls after returning from the sea using their pelvic sucker disc. This also means the population above the falls is isolated and has no refuge if local conditions deteriorate. Cebu Island has suffered extensive deforestation, and Uling Brook's catchment is reported to be severely degraded; the species may no longer persist at its type locality.
Feeding
Within the Sicydiinae, diet varies by genus: the closely related Stiphodon and Sicyopterus are primarily aufwuchs-grazers that rasp biofilm and diatoms from rock surfaces, whereas Sicyopus and Lentipes lean toward active predation on small invertebrates. Sicyopus cebuensis is treated as a specialized carnivore: Seriously Fish records it as a predator on small live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, brine shrimp, and Daphnia — and notes that it does not graze biofilm and largely ignores dried foods.
In the aquarium this means it cannot be kept on flake or standard pelleted diets and requires a regular supply of small live or frozen foods to maintain condition. Starvation or poor condition follows quickly if appropriate foods are withheld. This feeding specialization is one of several factors that make this species a demanding aquarium subject suited only to experienced keepers.
Mating
Sicyopus cebuensis follows the amphidromous reproductive strategy shared by all members of the Sicydiinae. Adults live and reproduce in fresh water, where males establish territories in the current over rock substrate. Courtship takes place within the stream, with the male guarding a suitable spawning site — a crevice, the underside of a stone, or a cave in the rocky streambed — and displaying to attract ripe females.
The species is sexually dimorphic in at least fin characters, and male territorial behaviour is consistent with the pattern seen across the cling-goby subfamily. No captive courtship accounts have been published for this species. The outcome of successful mating is a clutch of small, adhesive eggs deposited within the male's guarded territory.
Breeding
After spawning, the male guards the adhesive egg mass in the freshwater stream until hatching. The hatchlings, however, are not retained in fresh water: the newly emerged larvae are swept downstream by the current and enter the sea, where they spend a period as marine plankton developing as post-larvae. When ready to settle, the post-larvae return to the coast and migrate upstream into fresh water, using the pelvic sucker disc to cling against the current and to climb waterfall faces if necessary. This amphidromous cycle — fresh-water spawning, marine larval development, freshwater adult life — is a hallmark of the Sicydiinae and is the reason this subfamily has colonized island streams across the Indo-Pacific.
The consequence for aquarists is unambiguous: Sicyopus cebuensis cannot be bred in a closed aquarium system. No captive breeding has been documented. Any fish in the trade are wild-collected, and the species' precarious conservation status makes collection an ethical concern.
In the aquarium
Sicyopus cebuensis is a specialist fish for experienced keepers only, and its conservation status makes acquiring it at all a matter requiring careful consideration. If kept, it demands a dedicated stream-biotope setup: a tank of at least 60 × 12 in with extremely strong flow (10–15 times the tank volume per hour), clean, well-oxygenated water, a rocky substrate with crevices and flat stones, and a tight, escape-proof cover — Sicydiinae are capable climbers and will exit any gap in the lid.
Water quality must be pristine: 30–50% weekly water changes, a temperature of 72–82 °F, pH near neutral, and zero tolerance for ammonia or nitrite. A mature, established system is essential. The fish must be fed small live or frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, Artemia, Daphnia); it will not reliably accept dried foods and will decline on an inappropriate diet. Males are territorial and should be kept with only one per tank unless the setup is large with ample line-of-sight breaks. Mixing with robust or fast-moving tank mates is inadvisable; a species-only or quiet nano-companion setup is most appropriate.
Given that this species is effectively impossible to breed in captivity and may be critically imperilled in the wild, prospective keepers should seriously weigh whether acquisition is justified.
Conservation
Sicyopus cebuensis is classified as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting the limited information available at the time of assessment. In practice, the situation may be considerably worse than that designation implies: the species is known from a single location — Uling Brook, upper Naga River basin, Cebu Island — and that habitat has been reported as severely degraded, raising the possibility that the species is effectively extinct in its only known locality. Cebu Island has one of the highest rates of deforestation of any Philippine island, and highland stream habitats have been lost to agricultural conversion, sedimentation, and watershed destruction.
Because Sicyopus cebuensis is amphidromous, it cannot maintain a population without access to its marine larval phase and unobstructed upstream migration routes — meaning that even partial stream degradation or barrier construction can eliminate a population. The species is not maintained in captivity and cannot be bred in closed systems, so there is no ex-situ safety net. The combination of extreme range restriction, probable habitat loss, and absence of captive populations places this species among the most conservation-vulnerable freshwater gobies in the Philippines. Any aquarium trade in this fish comes at the direct expense of wild individuals that cannot be replaced through captive breeding.
