Like all members of the Sicydiinae subfamily it carries the defining character of the true gobies: the pelvic fins are fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc, an adaptation that lets the fish cling to smooth, current-swept boulders in the rheophilic streams it calls home. In the aquarium

Sicyopus auxilimentus is a specialist fish suited only to experienced keepers who can accurately replicate fast, oxygen-rich stream conditions. It demands strongly flowing, pristine fresh water — a dedicated hill-stream or fast-stream aquarium with high turnover, a powerhead or spray bar producing turbulent surface agitation, and a substrate of smooth rounded boulders and flat rock. Temperature should reflect the cool-to-warm range of upland tropical streams (roughly 68–79 °F depending on the collection locality); the water must be clean, well-oxygenated, and low in dissolved organics. Silt, stagnant corners, and poor oxygenation are quickly fatal.

The species is not a community aquarium fish. Its current needs exclude most community tank companions; suitable tankmates are limited to other rheophilic species from similar habitats. The tank must be covered securely — gobies are capable jumpers, and a gap in the lid is a death sentence.
