Ctenopoma muriei is a small African bushfish spread across an unusually broad swathe of the continent — from the White Nile basin southward into the tributaries of Lakes Victoria, Edward, George, Albert, and Tanganyika. Reaching no more than 3 in, it haunts sluggish backwaters, papyrus-fringed lagoons, and oxygen-poor swamp pools where its labyrinth organ allows it to breathe atmospheric air. Though rarely seen in the hobby, it is an archetypal sit-and-wait predator: cryptically patterned, slow-moving, and built to ambush the insect larvae, small crustaceans, and mollusks that crowd its vegetated refuges.

Taxonomy & naming

Ctenopoma muriei was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1906, based on material from the White Nile region; the authority is thus written in parentheses — (Boulenger, 1906) — reflecting a subsequent generic transfer. The valid name is confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Ctenopoma muriei. The genus Ctenopoma (family Anabantidae) groups the African climbing perches and bushfishes, a diverse assemblage of labyrinth fishes found across sub-Saharan Africa in habitats ranging from forest streams to open lake margins.

The specific epithet muriei honours John Reid Murie (1834–1925), the Scottish naturalist and comparative anatomist who contributed to Victorian-era natural history. C. muriei sits within the larger Ctenopoma complex as a medium-sized, benthopelagic species with a comparatively wide distribution, distinguishing it from some of its more forest-specialist congeners that are confined to narrow river basins in Central and West Africa. The name Ctenopoma houyi is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Ctenopoma muriei is a compact, oval-bodied fish reaching up to 3 in standard length in females; males are slightly smaller, typically around 2.5 in SL. The body is laterally compressed and moderately deep, with a rounded head, upturned mouth suited to taking prey at or near the surface, and the ctenoid (rough-edged) scales that give the genus its name.

Colouration is cryptic: the flanks are tan to olive-brown with irregular darker blotching or barring that breaks up the outline against leaf litter and aquatic vegetation. An ocellus — a dark spot ringed with a paler halo — is typically present at the base of the tail, a character reflected in the common name "ocellated labyrinth fish." Like all Ctenopoma, the species possesses a suprabranchial labyrinth organ above the gill chamber that enables direct respiration of atmospheric air, an adaptation for the hypoxic environments it favours. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; males may show slightly more intense markings during display.

Habitat

This species occupies sluggish and still freshwater habitats: lakes, lagoons, swamps, papyrus beds, and slow-moving tributary pools across a range that spans Egypt and Sudan through Chad and the Niger-Nigeria drainages, into Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, and Zambia. FishBase records it as benthopelagic, and it has been noted in the interstitial pools within papyrus stands, where juveniles in particular concentrate.

Water chemistry across this broad range varies, but the species is generally associated with warm, shallow, low-flow water: temperatures between 23 and 82 °F and pH values of 6.0 to 7.5. The Seriously Fish profile notes pH around 6 and temperature around 81 °F as typical captive parameters, with low hardness (around 5 dH) preferred. The labyrinth organ is well suited to these conditions — dissolved oxygen is often low in papyrus swamps and seasonally stagnant backwaters, and access to the air–water interface is more reliable than gill respiration alone.

Feeding

Ctenopoma muriei is a carnivorous to omnivorous ambush predator. FishBase records a diet of insect larvae, crustaceans, ostracods, dipteran larvae, beetles, mollusks, and organic debris. The upturned mouth and cryptic, motionless hunting posture are consistent with a species that waits for prey to come within striking range rather than actively coursing after it.

In the aquarium, live and frozen invertebrate foods are strongly preferred: bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped prawn, and earthworms are accepted, as are vegetable supplements. Most ctenopomas will learn to take high-quality pellets or pieces of frozen food once settled, but live prey elicits the strongest feeding response and is useful for conditioning pre-spawning adults. Small fish will be taken if they fit the mouth, so tankmates must be chosen accordingly.

Mating

Ctenopoma muriei is an open-water egg-scatterer: the pair embrace, releasing eggs and sperm into the water column near the surface, with no nest construction and no parental care. This mode aligns with the broader pattern seen across Ctenopoma and the closely related Microctenopoma, where most species scatter buoyant or floating eggs rather than building the bubble nests found in Asian gouramis.

Males of Ctenopoma species become more distinctly patterned or intensify existing markings during courtship, and the pair will circle and press together before a spawning embrace. Because detailed hobby breeding accounts for C. muriei specifically are sparse, some elements of its mating behaviour are inferred from closely related species, but the egg-scattering mode is consistent with genus-level biology and the FishBase reproductive notes for this species.

Breeding

Spawning occurs at night, according to FishBase data, with the pair releasing a clutch of 10 to 30 eggs. The eggs are buoyant or semi-buoyant and float toward the surface or into marginal vegetation after release; they receive no tending from either parent. At water temperatures in the upper range (around 81–82 °F) hatching is expected within approximately 48 hours, consistent with other open-water-spawning ctenopomas.

Fry are free-swimming quickly and require very small first foods — infusoria, micro-worms, or commercial liquid fry preparations — graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. The parents must be separated from the eggs immediately after spawning or they will consume them. Documented hobby breeding records for this species are rare, so exact clutch-size ranges at different temperatures remain poorly characterised in the aquarium literature.

In the aquarium

Ctenopoma muriei is seldom encountered in the hobby but is well suited to a species tank or a community of similarly sized, robust fish that are too large to be treated as prey. A tank of 20 US gal or more, heavily planted with floating and emergent cover, dim lighting, and a soft substrate of leaf litter or fine sand replicates the papyrus-swamp aesthetic and encourages the fish to display its natural hunting behaviour. Water should be warm (77–82 °F), soft to moderately hard, and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5).

As a labyrinth fish it must have unimpeded access to the water surface to breathe air; moist, warm air above the waterline is important in cooler rooms, so a fitted cover is advisable. Filtration should provide gentle turnover without strong surface turbulence. This is a slow-moving ambush predator that can be outcompeted at feeding by more boisterous tankmates; feeding with tongs or target-feeding with sinking frozen foods helps ensure it receives adequate nutrition. Its cryptic colouration and unhurried manner reward patient observation.

Conservation

Ctenopoma muriei is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, a reflection of its broad distribution across multiple African drainage systems — the White Nile, Lake Victoria basin, Lake Edward, Lake George, Lake Albert, Lake Tanganyika tributaries, and additional west and central African drainages. No dramatic population declines or range contractions are known, and the species occupies a wide variety of still and sluggish freshwater habitats that remain broadly intact across much of its range.

While specific threats have not been documented for this species, the papyrus wetlands and lake-margin swamps it occupies face ongoing pressure from drainage, agriculture, and sedimentation in parts of East Africa. Its wide range provides a buffer that narrowly endemic relatives lack. Collection for the ornamental trade is minimal given its low hobby profile, so commercial harvesting is unlikely to be a concern. Monitoring of wetland habitats in the East African rift basin remains important for this and many cohabiting species.
