Taxonomy & naming
Macropodus baviensis was described by Nguyen and Nguyen in 2005 in the third volume of Freshwater Fishes of Vietnam (Agriculture Publishing House, Hanoi), the primary ichthyological reference for the country's fish fauna. The Catalogue of Life accepts the name on the basis of that work. The type material originates from Vietnamese freshwaters, and the specific epithet refers to the Ba Vì region of north-central Vietnam, an area of karst hills and river tributaries feeding into the Red River drainage.
The genus Macropodus was erected by Lacépède in 1801 and belongs to the family Osphronemidae, the gourami family, within the order Anabantiformes. It is the type genus of the subfamily Macropodusinae. Freyhof and Herder (2002) conducted a comprehensive review of Macropodus in Vietnam and southern China, revising species boundaries and describing new taxa; their work established the taxonomic framework within which baviensis was subsequently placed. The genus currently includes roughly a dozen recognised species distributed across East and Southeast Asia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name Macropodus baviensis Nguyen & Nguyen, 2005.

Morphology
As a member of Macropodus, M. baviensis shares the genus' characteristic body plan: a moderately deep, laterally compressed form with long, filamentous extensions to the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins in mature males, and a rounded or slightly pointed snout with a small, upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding. The genus is well-known for the elaborate finnage of males, which develops fully only in adulthood and is the primary basis of sexual dimorphism.
Published morphometric data for M. baviensis specifically are sparse. FishBase records the species as a tropical freshwater benthopelagic fish; no standard length maxima or detailed colour descriptions are available in the publicly accessible literature as of the date of this article. What can be said is that it falls within the size range typical of the genus — Macropodus species generally reach 2.5–3.5 in total length — and likely shows the barred or banded lateral pattern, iridescent scale highlights, and red-and-blue or red-and-green tonal contrasts that characterise other Vietnamese Macropodus. Females are typically plainer, shorter-finned, and rounder-bellied when gravid.
Habitat
Macropodus baviensis is a freshwater species confined to Vietnam, where it occupies the smaller rivers, streams, paddy-field ditches, and standing water bodies of the northern and north-central part of the country. The Ba Vì area referenced in the specific epithet lies within the Red River basin; the broader literature on Macropodus in Vietnam places related species in rice paddies, slow-flowing lowland tributaries, and seasonal pools — warm, often shallow, frequently vegetated environments that can become oxygen-poor in the dry season or during hot weather.
As an obligate air-breather with a suprabranchial labyrinth organ, M. baviensis is well adapted to these conditions. It must have access to the water surface to gulp atmospheric oxygen; in aquatic habitats where dissolved oxygen fluctuates widely, this adaptation confers a decisive advantage over obligate gill-breathers. FishBase places the species in a tropical freshwater context consistent with the lowland climate of northern Vietnam, where water temperatures in natural habitats broadly follow seasonal cycles from the low 20s Celsius in winter to the upper 20s or low 30s in summer.
Feeding
Macropodus species are opportunistic predators of small invertebrates, consuming aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and surface-dwelling prey in the wild. The upturned mouth is well suited to picking prey from the water surface and from emergent vegetation. M. baviensis, occupying rice-paddy and stream-margin habitats, likely exploits the rich invertebrate fauna of those environments, including mosquito larvae — a trophic role noted for Macropodus opercularis and related species.
In the aquarium, paradise fishes as a group are unfussy feeders that readily accept live and frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp, tubifex), small insects, and quality prepared foods such as pellets and flake. Mating
Macropodus baviensis is a bubble-nesting labyrinth fish. Males of all Macropodus species build a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles at the water surface — anchored beneath floating vegetation, a leaf, or another surface feature when available — and use this structure to receive and hold the eggs after spawning. The bubble nest is constructed entirely by the male in the days before spawning and is defended aggressively against other fish, including other males and, once eggs are deposited, often against the female as well.
Courtship in the genus involves the male displaying his extended finnage in lateral and head-on postures, with body colour intensifying. When a female signals receptivity, the pair engage in nuptial embraces beneath the bubble nest: the male wraps his body around the female, fertilising eggs as they are released. The buoyant eggs float upward into the nest; the male retrieves any that drift away and may also place fertilised eggs into the nest manually. Male aggression toward the female typically escalates after spawning, and the two should be separated once spawning is complete.
Breeding
Once eggs are secured in the bubble nest, the male assumes sole parental care, fanning the nest, retrieving fallen eggs, and defending the territory beneath until the fry become free-swimming — typically within 24–48 hours for hatching and a further 2–4 days before the fry are free-swimming, depending on temperature. The male should be removed at this point, as he may eat the fry once they disperse.
Specific breeding records for M. baviensis in captivity are not documented in the available literature. However, the genus Macropodus has been bred in aquaria since the nineteenth century — M. opercularis was among the first tropical fish ever spawned in a European aquarium — and the general husbandry approach is well established. Conditioning the pair on live or frozen foods, providing a floating structure or dense surface cover for nest-building, and raising the water temperature to the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius are standard triggers. A tight-fitting lid is essential: labyrinth fishes breathe air, and cold draughts over the surface can chill juveniles whose labyrinth organ is still developing. Fry begin free-swimming in the surface layer and need infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow.
In the aquarium
Macropodus baviensis is not an established aquarium species; it does not appear to be available in the mainstream ornamental trade, and hobbyist accounts of keeping or breeding it are essentially absent from the published literature and hobby forums as of this writing. It is one of several Macropodus species described or redescribed in recent decades that remain scientific curiosities rather than aquarium subjects.
For aquarists who do encounter specimens — perhaps through specialist collectors or field-collection in Vietnam — the care requirements can be inferred from the genus. Macropodus tolerate a wide range of water conditions and temperatures, making them among the hardier labyrinth fishes; they are not the sensitive blackwater specialists that some other osphronemids are. A species tank or a tank with robust, similarly sized tankmates is advisable, as males are territorial and prone to fin-nipping or outright fighting with other males and sometimes with females outside breeding condition. A well-planted aquarium of 23.5 in or more in length, with a secure lid and access to the water surface, suits the genus. Water temperatures of around 64–82 °F cover the range tolerated by temperate-adapted Macropodus, with the higher end appropriate for breeding.
Conservation
Macropodus baviensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). As with many recently described freshwater fishes from Southeast Asia, it falls into the large category of species for which distributional data, population estimates, and threat assessments simply have not yet been compiled in the formal IUCN process.
Vietnam's freshwater fish fauna faces significant pressure from habitat loss, water abstraction, pollution from intensive agriculture, and dam construction on river systems across the country. Endemics confined to a single river drainage — such as species of the Ba Vì or Gianh River area — are inherently more vulnerable to localised degradation than widespread generalists. FishBase rates M. baviensis as having high resilience (population doubling time under 15 months), which is a biological attribute that can buffer declines if habitat is maintained, but does not substitute for a proper threat assessment. A formal evaluation under IUCN criteria would require field surveys to establish the species' current range and abundance.
