Taxonomy & naming
Macropodus hongkongensis was described by Jörg Freyhof and Fabian Herder in 2002 from specimens collected at Sha Lo Tung, Tai Po, Hong Kong. For many years the Hong Kong populations had been assigned to the black paradise fish, Macropodus concolor, but morphological and molecular work demonstrated they represented a distinct lineage. The name M. concolor was subsequently found to be a junior synonym of M. spechti, the Vietnamese species it had long been confused with, leaving the Hong Kong fish as a valid species in its own right under the Freyhof & Herder description.
Mitogenome sequencing carried out by Nanjing Forestry University in 2019 confirmed the species' distinctness and identified its closest relative as Macropodus erythropterus, the red-back paradise fish of Vietnam — not, as intuition might suggest, the geographically proximate Chinese paradise fish M. opercularis. The genus Macropodus sits within Osphronemidae, the family of true gouramis and paradisefishes, all of which are labyrinth fishes breathing atmospheric air through a folded suprabranchial organ. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Macropodus hongkongensis Freyhof & Herder, 2002.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum of around 2.5–3 in standard length, with males typically the larger sex and developing more elaborate fin extensions. The body plan is the compressed, deep-chested Macropodus profile, with a long-based dorsal fin and an equally long anal fin whose soft rays trail into filamentous extensions in mature males. The caudal fin is forked, distinguishing this species from the rounded tail of some congeners.
The most reliable diagnostic features include: black spots on the head (absent or indistinct in M. spechti); three to five dark brown saddle-like blotches along the predorsal ridge; darker scale margins on the body but not the head or predorsal area; a conspicuous dark brown opercular spot; and the white distal ray on the first soft pelvic-fin ray — red in M. spechti. In live males, red spots and bars enliven the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, and the pelvic fins carry the species' signature white leading ray against a darker ground colour. Meristics recorded by FishBase stand at 13–14 dorsal spines, 17–19 anal spines, and 29–30 vertebrae.
Habitat
In Hong Kong, M. hongkongensis inhabits mountain hill streams and lowland agricultural environments — shallow, densely vegetated, slow-moving or nearly still water in the Sai Kung, Tai Po, and northern New Territories districts. The species is found from montane drainage channels down to low-lying coastal marshes and paddy-adjacent wetlands, the kind of marginal, hard-to-develop habitat that has suffered most from Hong Kong's land-use changes. The type locality is Sha Lo Tung, a rural valley in Tai Po that retains relatively intact wetland.
Water conditions across these habitats span a moderate range: Seriously Fish records temperatures of 59–77 °F and pH 6.0–8.0, with hardness from soft to moderately hard (90–357 ppm). This is a more eurythermal and euryhaline picture than many osphronemids, consistent with an East Asian species whose native range experiences genuine seasonal temperature variation rather than a stable tropical climate. The species shares its territory with mainland Guangdong and Fujian populations at comparable lowland stream and wetland sites.
As a labyrinth fish, M. hongkongensis can breathe atmospheric air directly through its suprabranchial organ, an adaptation to the warm, sometimes oxygen-depleted still and slow waters it frequents. Surface access is therefore a physiological requirement, not merely a preference.
Feeding
Macropodus hongkongensis is a generalist predator of small invertebrates in the wild, as are paradise fishes generally. It hunts insects, small crustaceans, worms, and other small prey from the surface and water column of its shallow vegetated habitats.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide variety of live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, Artemia, white worms, and grindal worms are all taken eagerly and useful for conditioning. Good-quality dried foods (flake, small pellets) are accepted but a diet rich in live and frozen items keeps the fish in better colour and breeding condition. Like other Macropodus, it is an active, opportunistic feeder rather than a picky specialist.
Mating
Macropodus hongkongensis is a bubble-nester. Males are territorial and become conspicuously aggressive toward one another when reproductive behaviour is triggered, typically by a slight rise in temperature and by soft water conditions. A displaying male intensifies his red fin barring and chases rivals and females alike until a receptive female is ready to spawn.
Courtship follows the osphronemid pattern: the male constructs a floating bubble nest — a raft of mucus-bound bubbles — typically anchored within surface vegetation. He then courts the female beneath it, and when she is receptive the pair engage in the characteristic nuptial embrace, pressing together in a belly-to-belly curve beneath the nest while eggs and sperm are simultaneously released. The fertilised eggs, each buoyed by a small oil globule, float upward into the nest. Unlike some Macropodus pairs, adult M. hongkongensis appear to tolerate one another after spawning, with both sexes sometimes remaining in the vicinity of the nest without the female needing to be removed.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is achievable in a dedicated aquarium with a tight-fitting lid — essential for a labyrinth fish, as cold draughts above the water surface damage the developing suprabranchial organ in young fry. A gradual temperature rise into the warmer end of the species' range and a partial water change with slightly softer water typically triggers spawning activity.
The male builds the surface bubble nest and defends it after spawning. Eggs hatch within the nest and the fry remain there, tended by the male, until the yolk is absorbed and they become free-swimming. First foods must be infusoria-grade — very fine live cultures or commercial liquid fry foods — before the fry are large enough to take microworms and freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. Several hundred eggs may be produced across a single spawning, though fry survival depends heavily on the quality of first feeding. Adults do not eat the offspring.
In the aquarium
Macropodus hongkongensis is an appealing choice for aquarists with an interest in East Asian fishes or in species of conservation significance, and its moderate size and tolerance of a wide temperature range make it more accommodating than many labyrinth fishes. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in length suits a pair or a small group, densely planted with floating and emergent vegetation to mimic the vegetated streams and wetlands of its range, and with a tight-fitting cover to maintain warm, humid air above the surface.
Males are aggressive toward one another and toward females outside breeding condition, so pairs or a single male with one or two females work better than groups of males. The species is best kept species-only or with robust, non-nippy tankmates that can cope with mild harassment; delicate long-finned species are inadvisable. Water conditions should remain within the 59–77 °F range, though the species tolerates the cooler end well, and pH can span 6.0–8.0. Because of its restricted wild range and conservation concern status, sourcing captive-bred stock rather than wild-caught fish is strongly advisable.
Conservation
Macropodus hongkongensis carries no formal IUCN Red List category — it is listed as Not Evaluated — yet it is formally recognised among the 21 freshwater fish species of conservation concern by Hong Kong's Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. The peer-reviewed literature (Chan, Dudgeon & Chen 2008, Environmental Biology of Fishes) treated it as a threatened fish and documented its primary pressures: habitat loss and degradation (particularly of lowland coastal marshes, several of which have been developed since the species' discovery), over-harvesting, pollution, climate change, and competition from introduced exotic species.
When first described in 2002, five Hong Kong localities were known; by subsequent surveys only two districts — Tai Po and Sai Kung — retained populations within the territory, with the original Sham Chung wetland site destroyed. Mainland populations in Guangdong and Fujian somewhat widen the species' total range and reduce its extinction risk relative to a true Hong Kong endemic, but the Hong Kong populations remain isolated and subject to intense urban and recreational pressure. David Dudgeon of the University of Hong Kong has noted a real risk of over-exploitation and advocated for IUCN Red List inclusion. Captive breeding in the hobby offers a safeguard: the species reproduces readily in aquaria, and hobbyist-maintained populations could serve as an insurance colony pending any formal assessment and protection measures.
