Taxonomy & naming
Macropodus oligolepis was described by Nguyen, Ngo & Nguyen in 2005. The type locality is Quang Binh Province in central Vietnam, and the holotype measures 1.5 in standard length. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Macropodus oligolepis Nguyen, Ngo & Nguyen, 2005; the authority is not parenthesised because the species was described directly in Macropodus, where it remains. FishBase places it in the family Osphronemidae, subfamily Macropodusinae.
The species name oligolepis is a compound of the Greek oligos (few) and lepis (scale), almost certainly referring to a reduced scale count or some meristic feature of the squamation that distinguished it from its congeners at the time of description. The genus Macropodus was established by Lacepède in 1801 and contains the paradisefishes of East and Southeast Asia, a group of labyrinth fishes well known to aquarists primarily through Macropodus opercularis, the common paradisefish. Macropodus oligolepis is one of the lesser-known members of the genus; no synonyms are recorded.
