Parosphromenus alfredi is one of the rarest and most range-restricted of the licorice gouramis — a jewel-toned cave spawner endemic to a thin strip of peat-swamp remnants in eastern Johor, on the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia. Males dress in deep black, blue-iridescent and red-banded fins that flare into startling colour during courtship; outside that display the fish can appear almost plain, a cryptic default that matches the dark, tannin-stained water it calls home. Assessed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN in 2019, it survives today largely in degraded peat-swamp fragments, drainage ditches and roadside canals where its original forest habitat once stood.

Taxonomy & naming

Parosphromenus alfredi was described by Maurice Kottelat and Peter K.L. Ng in 2005 as part of a revision of the genus Parosphromenus. The type series was collected from a former peat-swamp stream in an oil-palm plantation in Johor, Peninsular Malaysia, sampled in 1992, where the water measured pH 4.5–5.0 and appeared light brown with dissolved humic acids. The valid name is Parosphromenus alfredi Kottelat & Ng, 2005; the specific epithet honours Eric Alfred, former director of the National Museum of Singapore, whose research on the fishes of Malaya proved instrumental in subsequent taxonomic revisions of the region's anabantoids.

The genus Parosphromenus belongs to the family Osphronemidae and, within it, to a closely knit clade of small, secretive, peat-swamp labyrinth fishes. Phylogenetic analyses place Parosphromenus as most closely related to Betta or Trichopsis, and the group is sometimes placed within the informal subfamily Macropodusinae alongside Macropodus, Pseudosphromenus and Malpulutta. Kottelat & Ng distinguished P. alfredi from its nearest congeners by a combination of meristic characters: 12–13 dorsal spines, 11–13 anal spines, 8–10 segmented anal rays. It most closely resembles P. phoenicurus and P. tweediei but is separated from the former by its rounded (versus rhombic) caudal fin, and from the latter by the presence of blue markings in the unpaired fins that tweediei lacks. Around 20 species are now recognised in the genus.

Morphology

Parosphromenus alfredi is a tiny fish, reaching a maximum of about 1 in standard length. The body is slender, laterally compressed and unremarkable in outline — typical of a fish designed to thread through root tangles and decomposing leaf litter. Outside the breeding context both sexes are capable of rapid colour change, and resting or stressed individuals appear largely drab.

In breeding coloration, males are striking at close range. The dorsal, anal and caudal fins each carry a prominent black subdistal band bordered on both edges by bands of bluish iridescence; on the dorsal and anal the inner iridescent band can shift toward reddish or orange toward the posterior region of the fin. The proximal portion of both the dorsal and anal fins is dark red to black. The pelvic fins are blue to black with a white or bluish filamentous elongated tip, which becomes a distinctive display feature during courtship. The caudal fin is rounded and shows a similar banding scheme with the proximal region deepest red. Females are far less colourful, lacking the blue and red banding; they retain the capacity for rapid colour shift but in a more muted palette.

Habitat

Parosphromenus alfredi is endemic to a small portion of eastern Johor state on the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia. Confirmed localities include Kota Tinggi, Mawai and Desaru — a coastal belt where peat-swamp forest once extended inland from the Strait of Johor. The species is a stenotypic inhabitant of peat swamps and their associated blackwater drainage streams: still or very gently flowing water over deep peat or sandy substrate, stained dark brown by dissolved humic and fulvic acids, shaded by a closed forest canopy.

Water chemistry in authentic habitat is extreme by most freshwater standards. pH typically falls between 4.5 and 5.0 and can be lower, hardness is negligible, conductivity close to zero, and tannin load high. Temperatures range from about 72–82 °F; the lower end of that range is more natural in the shade of intact forest. Dissolved oxygen can be low in still peat water, which is one ecological pressure that favoured the evolution of the labyrinth organ — the accessory air-breathing organ that allows Parosphromenus and all other anabantoids to gulp atmospheric air at the surface and survive in poorly oxygenated conditions.

The original habitat has been heavily modified by land clearance for oil-palm cultivation and urbanisation. Today P. alfredi survives mainly in peat-swamp remnants, irrigation ditches and roadside canals within former plantation land — marginal conditions that the species tolerates but which represent a severe contraction from its historical range.

Feeding

Parosphromenus alfredi is a micropredator, hunting tiny aquatic invertebrates in the water column and among leaf litter and root tangles. In its peat-swamp environment that menu consists of micro-crustaceans, copepods, small insect larvae, water fleas and other zooplankton sized at the scale of a 1 in predator.

In the aquarium the species requires live foods, at least initially. Newly hatched Artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii, Daphnia, Moina, micro worms and mosquito larvae are reliable staples. Frozen versions of these foods are sometimes accepted but are less nutritious than live material and should not form the bulk of the diet. Dried or prepared products are normally refused. Because the fish is so small, food particle size matters: anything too large is simply ignored. Feeding small amounts multiple times daily replicates the continuous opportunistic foraging behaviour of the species in the wild.

Mating

Parosphromenus alfredi spawns in caves or sheltered crevices, making it a cave spawner rather than an open bubble-nester. Courtship follows a distinctive and intense ritual. The male positions himself head-down — in a near-vertical orientation with his head lowermost and all fins spread and flushed to peak coloration — and displays in front of the female. This posture, characteristic of Parosphromenus courtship, throws the pelvic-fin filaments and the bands in the unpaired fins into sharp relief against the dark water.

Once the female is receptive, the pair move together inside or immediately adjacent to the spawning cave. Spawning proceeds in a series of brief embraces in which the male wraps around the female, and small batches of eggs and milt are released simultaneously. After each embrace both fish attempt to retrieve the eggs and attach them to the roof of the cave; the male takes the primary role in this. The pair bond is temporary and courtship-specific.

Breeding

Following the spawning embraces, the male tends the egg cluster on the cave ceiling. He typically constructs a very rudimentary bubble scaffold — far less elaborate than the free-floating nest of an open bubble-nesting gourami — primarily to help hold the eggs in place. Incubation lasts approximately 24 to 36 hours at typical temperatures. The larvae are initially immobile, hanging in or near the cave; they become mobile at around 4 to 6 days post-spawning and are fully free-swimming after a further 3 to 5 days.

First foods for the fry must be extremely small: Paramecium and rotifers are the standard opening diet, with newly hatched Artemia nauplii introduced as the fry grow. In a well-structured aquarium with ample cover the fry can be raised alongside the parents without needing to be separated, since the adults are not actively predatory toward offspring in suitable conditions. Sexual maturity comes gradually and males require time to develop their full breeding coloration.

Captive breeding of P. alfredi is practised by specialist hobbyists and enthusiasts connected to the Parosphromenus Project, an international network dedicated to the genus. The species is not available through commercial channels and circulates solely through private aquarist networks.

In the aquarium

A pair of Parosphromenus alfredi can be maintained in a very small aquarium — a footprint of roughly 40 × 8 in (about 4 US gal) is adequate for a single pair — but the tank must replicate the chemical conditions of blackwater peat swamps. Soft, acidic water is non-negotiable: pH between 3.0 and 6.5 is tolerated, with the range 4.0–5.0 closest to natural conditions and most likely to induce breeding. Hardness should be very low. Temperature can range from 72–82 °F; the cooler end of that range suits the species' forest habitat origins, and a deliberate temperature rise toward the upper end is sometimes used to trigger spawning.

Filtration must be gentle — strong currents are incompatible with this still-water specialist — and surface access is essential for air-breathing. Blackwater preparation (Indian almond leaves, peat filtration or commercially prepared blackwater extract) helps lower pH and tannin the water appropriately, and also provides the micro-fauna on decomposing leaf surfaces that can supplement the diet of small fry. Caves for spawning should be provided: small sections of bamboo, ceramic cave ornaments, or coconut halves all work. The species is extremely shy and does not tolerate boisterous tankmates; it is best kept as a species-only pair or in a very quiet community of similarly delicate, blackwater-adapted fish. It is not available commercially and keeping it carries a conservation obligation: maintaining a healthy captive population and sharing surplus fish through responsible hobbyist networks.

Conservation

Parosphromenus alfredi is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B2ab(iii,v), assessed 14 January 2019. The listing reflects both the extremely limited extent of occurrence — a small cluster of localities in eastern Johor — and continuing decline in the quality and extent of peat-swamp habitat across that range. Johor's peat-swamp forests have been subject to intensive clearance for oil-palm and rubber cultivation, and ongoing urban and agricultural expansion leaves the species with diminishing refugia.

The species now survives largely in secondary habitats — irrigation ditches and roadside drainage canals within plantation landscapes — that offer a chemical environment broadly compatible with survival but lack the structural complexity of intact peat-swamp forest. These remnant populations are small, isolated, and vulnerable to localised drainage events, pollution incidents and infrastructure works. There is no known ex-situ conservation programme at an institutional level, though the Parosphromenus Project documents and monitors the genus and facilitates private captive-breeding efforts that represent the primary safeguard for P. alfredi outside its shrinking wild range. Given the species' tiny size, extreme chemical specialisation and dependence on structurally complex peat-swamp habitat, effective conservation ultimately depends on protection of the remaining peat-swamp fragments in eastern Johor.
