Taxonomy & naming
Parosphromenus barbarae was formally described by Tan Heok Hui and Jongkar Grinang in 2020 in the journal Vertebrate Zoology. The holotype is an adult male measuring approximately 1 in standard length, collected from the Batang Kayan drainage near Lundu in western Sarawak. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Parosphromenus barbarae Tan & Grinang, 2020, and FishBase likewise confirms the name as accepted in its original combination.
The species is placed within Parosphromenus, a genus of small, cryptically coloured, labyrinth-breathing gouramis in the family Osphronemidae — the licorice gouramis of Southeast Asian peat swamps. It is diagnosably distinct from its nearest congener, P. allani, by a combination of fin-ray counts and colour characters: the presence of a distinct black ocellus at the caudal-fin base, an indistinct dark-brown ocellus at the posterior dorsal-fin base, and a clearly demarcated subdistal hyaline band on the anal fin. Meristic data include dorsal-fin rays XI–XIV, 4–5 (mode 17); anal-fin rays XI–XIII, 6–10 (mode 21); and lateral scales 29–31½ (mode 29). The two species appear to replace each other geographically — P. allani in the Rejang basin of eastern Sarawak, P. barbarae in the Batang Kayan basin at Sarawak's western end — consistent with a pattern of allopatric speciation along the rivers of Borneo's Sarawak coast.
Morphology
Parosphromenus barbarae is tiny even by the standard of its genus, with the holotype male reaching only about 1 in standard length. The body form is slender and elongate, as in all Parosphromenus, suited to threading through dense aquatic vegetation and root mats in shallow swamp water. The fin-ray formula is consistent with genus-level norms and is one of the characters that separates P. barbarae from P. allani at the western Sarawak boundary.
The most distinctive external features are the caudal and dorsal fin markings. Males bear a well-defined black ocellus at the base of the caudal fin — this marking is distinct and diagnostic — together with a less pronounced dark-brown ocellus at the posterior base of the dorsal fin. The anal fin displays a clearly demarcated pale (hyaline) subdistal band. As in other Parosphromenus species, males in breeding condition develop more intense pigmentation than females, and the translucent fins show the banding patterns most vividly when the fish is held in bright sidelight.
Habitat
Parosphromenus barbarae is known only from remnant peat swamp forest associated with the Batang Kayan, the small river system draining the Lundu district at the westernmost tip of Sarawak. This is lowland tropical peat swamp, a habitat defined by extremely soft, acidic blackwater coloured dark brown by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leached from the peat substrate. pH in undisturbed Bornean peat swamp blackwater routinely falls between 3.4 and 3.8 — among the lowest recorded for any freshwater fish habitat — and conductivity is near zero. Aquatic vegetation characteristic of the system includes Utricularia, Macaranga, and Pandanus, with dense riparian cover and a floor of waterlogged peat and leaf litter.
As a labyrinth fish, P. barbarae breathes atmospheric air via the suprabranchial organ and tolerates the low dissolved-oxygen conditions that are typical of still or near-still peat swamp pools. Temperature in undisturbed Sarawak lowland peat swamps is broadly tropical, typically around 75–82 °F. The species is stenotopic — narrowly dependent on this specific habitat type — and its known distribution encompasses only those fragments of peat swamp that have not yet been converted to oil palm or drained for agriculture in the Batang Kayan catchment.
Feeding
Like all Parosphromenus, P. barbarae is a micropredator in the wild. The natural diet consists primarily of tiny aquatic invertebrates — small crustaceans, insect larvae, and other microarthropods — gleaned from the water column, leaf litter, and biofilm surfaces of the peat swamp floor. Prey items are correspondingly minute, matching the fish's own small size and the generally low-productivity nature of blackwater systems.
In captivity, Parosphromenus species as a group require live foods to thrive, and there is no reason to expect P. barbarae to be different. Small live foods — Daphnia, copepods, baby brine shrimp, micro worms, and white worms — are the preferred diet, and fish maintained exclusively on dry food typically fail to breed and may slowly decline. Some individuals can be trained onto high-quality frozen alternatives, but live food should remain the foundation of the diet for long-term health.
Mating
Parosphromenus barbarae is a cave or substrate spawner, as is universal in the genus. The male establishes and defends a small spawning site — typically a cave, crevice, or sheltered cavity beneath submerged leaf litter, roots, or other overhead cover — and courts females by displaying his fin patterns at close range. Parosphromenus courtship is elaborate for such a small fish: the male positions himself broadside, erects and fans his fins, and displays the ocellus markings and hyaline bands that are most striking in breeding males, apparently functioning as species-recognition signals within a genus of very similar-sized sympatric or parapatric species.
Females choose among displaying males, and spawning occurs inside the selected cave, where the pair deposit a small clutch of eggs on the ceiling or walls of the cavity. The male assumes exclusive responsibility for egg-guarding after spawning.
Breeding
Breeding in Parosphromenus barbarae follows the cave-spawning pattern shared across the genus. After courtship, the female deposits a small number of eggs inside the spawning cavity — clutch sizes in Parosphromenus are typically modest, in the range of a few dozen eggs — which adhere to the substrate surface. The male tends the eggs through incubation, fanning them and removing infertile or fungused eggs. Females are best removed after spawning to prevent harassment.
The EAZA Best Practice Guidelines for Parosphromenus (2024) confirm cave or substrate spawning as the natural mode for the genus. In captivity, small caves formed from PVC pipe sections, ceramic cichlid hides, bamboo, or film canisters are widely used by hobbyists working with licorice gouramis. Successful breeding requires the very soft, acidic water that mirrors the natural blackwater environment: pH values around 4.0–5.5 and conductivity kept very low; harder or more alkaline conditions typically prevent breeding and may compromise long-term health. Parosphromenus Project hobbyists emphasize that small founding populations and limited captive stocks mean genetic diversity is a real concern in ex situ groups — exchange of individuals between separate captive lines is recommended.
In the aquarium
Parosphromenus barbarae is not established in the general aquarium trade and is effectively unknown outside specialist circles. Even within the genus, only a handful of species circulate among Parosphromenus Project members, and P. barbarae — described only in 2020 from a single western Sarawak locality — is among the least available. Dedicated hobbyists who work with licorice gouramis should treat this species with the same blackwater husbandry protocols applied to the genus at large: small, heavily planted, dimly lit tanks; extremely soft, acidic, tannin-rich water maintained with peat filtration or catappa leaves; very gentle flow or no filtration; live food exclusively or primarily; and caves or leaf-litter shelters mimicking the natural spawning habitat.
Tank size need not be large — a species tank of 10–15 US gal is ample for a breeding group — but water quality must be stable and parameters kept extreme by most aquarium standards (pH 4.0–5.5, conductivity under 100 µS/cm, temperature 75–81 °F). Parosphromenus are calm, slow-moving fish that are easily outcompeted by more boisterous tankmates, and they are best kept as species-only or with other peat-swamp blackwater dwellers of similar temperament. Surface access is essential for labyrinth air-breathing. Because of the species' extreme rarity in the wild and its very restricted range, any captive individuals represent a meaningful conservation resource, and contact with the Parosphromenus Project before obtaining or breeding specimens is strongly advised.
Conservation
Parosphromenus barbarae has not received a formal IUCN Red List assessment; the species was described only in 2020, and the lag between description and assessment is common for newly named microendemics in the tropics. However, the conservation prognosis implied by its ecology and distribution is stark. Its entire known range falls within the remnant peat swamps of Lundu district, western Sarawak — one of the most heavily deforested and converted landscapes in Malaysian Borneo. Peat swamp conversion to oil palm, logging, drainage, and fire has eliminated the overwhelming majority of lowland Sarawak peat forest over recent decades, and the Batang Kayan catchment is not exempt from these pressures.
The combination of extreme microendemism (a single river catchment), strict habitat specialisation (intact peat swamp blackwater at pH 3–4), and rapid, ongoing habitat loss places this species in a position that would warrant at least Vulnerable, and possibly Endangered, classification under IUCN criteria if assessed. Until a formal assessment is conducted, the species must be treated as a conservation priority by default. Captive populations held by responsible hobbyists through programmes such as the Parosphromenus Project represent the only insurance against extinction should the Batang Kayan peat swamp remnants be further degraded or destroyed.
