Taxonomy & naming
Parosphromenus deissneri was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1859, making it the nominal type species of the genus Parosphromenus. The genus name combines the Greek para (beside or near) with Osphromenus, the type genus of the family, indicating close relationship. The genus was long thought to contain only a handful of species, but modern work has expanded it to around 20 recognised taxa, many described since the 1990s.
Bangka Island was historically treated as home to a single Parosphromenus population, but a 1998 redescription by Kottelat and Ng — which included designation of a neotype from the type locality of Baturussak, Bangka — clarified that two distinct species occur on the island and established modern diagnostic characters for P. deissneri specifically. The valid name as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Parosphromenus deissneri (Bleeker, 1859), with the parenthetical authority reflecting Bleeker's original placement in a different genus.
The specific epithet honours Friedrich Deissner, the collector who supplied Bleeker with Bangka material in the mid-nineteenth century. The species sits within Osphronemidae, the family encompassing all gouramis and their allies, and is classified in the subfamily Macropodusinae.
Morphology
Parosphromenus deissneri is one of the smallest members of its family, reaching a maximum of around 1 in standard length (approximately 1.5 in total length in large males). The body is slender and laterally compressed, typical of the genus, with a pointed snout and large eyes positioned high on the head. The labyrinth organ — a suprabranchial accessory breathing structure — is present but proportionally smaller than in larger osphronemids, consistent with the species' preference for still, warm water.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and diagnostic. Males in nuptial dress develop a striking fin pattern: the unpaired fins carry a black subdistal band and are edged with iridescent blue, with pale oval spots or markings scattered across the fin membranes — a spot arrangement (rather than streaks) that helps distinguish P. deissneri from congeners with similar coloration. The caudal fin has a distinctly rhombic shape, and in fully mature males a prolonged median caudal ray forms a filament. Females are cryptically coloured, lacking the blue-edged bands and blue or red markings of breeding males; females of different Parosphromenus species are often nearly indistinguishable from one another, making female identification to species level difficult without known-origin provenance.
Habitat
Parosphromenus deissneri is endemic to Bangka Island (Bangka-Belitung province, Indonesia) and has not been confirmed from any other locality. On Bangka it inhabits jungle swamps, peat-bog pools, and tea-coloured blackwater streams typical of the island's coastal lowland terrain. These environments are defined by humic and fulvic acids leached from decomposing vegetation, which colour the water a deep amber-brown and suppress the pH to values that few other fish tolerates: field measurements from documented collection sites have recorded pH as low as 3.0–4.0, with conductivity in the range of 4–8 µS/cm and temperatures between approximately 79–82 °F.
This is extreme blackwater — among the most acidic freshwater habitats on earth — and P. deissneri is physiologically adapted to it. The near-absence of dissolved minerals means there is essentially no buffering capacity; temperatures are equable year-round in the humid tropical lowlands. Like all labyrinth fishes, the species breathes atmospheric air at the surface, an adaptation of particular value in warm, oxygen-depleted peat-swamp water where dissolved oxygen can be very low.
Habitat loss on Bangka has been severe. The island has undergone extensive clearing for palm-oil plantations and open-cast tin mining, and the acidic peat-swamp forests that P. deissneri depends on have been fragmented or destroyed across large areas. The remaining populations are patchily distributed in surviving swamp fragments.
Feeding
In the wild, Parosphromenus deissneri is a micropredator, taking tiny aquatic invertebrates from the water column and substrate — small crustaceans such as copepods, chironomid larvae, and other minute organisms that colonise the leaf litter and peat of its blackwater habitat. The diet reflects the low-productivity nature of peat swamps, where large food items are scarce and small, energy-dense prey such as microcrustaceans are the most reliable resource.
In aquarium conditions the species accepts a variety of small live and frozen foods: Artemia nauplii (newly hatched brine shrimp), Daphnia, Moina, mosquito larvae, and micro worms are all taken readily and constitute the bulk of a good captive diet. Dry foods are accepted by some individuals but should not form the sole diet; the species' small gape and preference for moving prey mean that live and frozen invertebrates are important both nutritionally and behaviourally. Feeding small amounts twice daily is preferable to a single large meal.
Mating
Parosphromenus deissneri is a cave spawner. Males select and defend a small cavity — a crevice in wood or leaf litter, an overhanging leaf, or a similarly sheltered microsite — and court females with exaggerated fin displays and distinctive body postures. Courtship posturing is characteristically head-down or horizontal, with the male spreading and quivering his unpaired fins to show the iridescent blue margins and pale oval spots to maximum effect. A receptive female approaches and the pair engage in circular or parallel swimming in close proximity before spawning.
Pair bonds are temporary rather than permanent; after spawning, the female's role diminishes and the male assumes sole responsibility for the nest site. The species forms breeding associations only for the duration of courtship and egg deposition, with males remaining at the nest to guard and tend the eggs.
Breeding
Spawning takes place inside the chosen cave or crevice, where the pair release a small clutch of eggs that adhere to the ceiling or walls of the cavity. Incubation is relatively short — approximately 24–36 hours at typical temperatures — after which the larvae hatch as small, helpless fry that cling to the spawning surface. The male guards the nest actively during incubation and the early larval period, retrieving any eggs or fry that fall. The fry become free-swimming after approximately 4–6 days and begin to disperse from the nest site; parental care typically ceases a few days after the fry achieve free-swimming mobility.
In captivity, success depends heavily on replicating the species' soft, acidic water chemistry. Attempting to breed P. deissneri at neutral or hard-water conditions almost always fails; breeders report best results at pH 4.0–5.5 and very low conductivity, with water conditioned using peat or tannin extracts (Indian almond leaves, dried alder cones). Small caves of bamboo, coconut shell, or short lengths of PVC tube provide suitable spawning sites. The free-swimming fry are very small and require infusoria or commercial micro-foods for the first several days before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. A dedicated breeding tank with minimal flow and very gentle surface agitation is strongly preferred over a community setup.
In the aquarium
Parosphromenus deissneri is a specialist fish for the experienced aquarist willing to maintain very soft, acidic blackwater conditions. It is not a beginner species, and the gap between tolerable and optimal water chemistry is narrow: while FishBase records a pH tolerance range of 5.6–7.2 for the species, field data and keeper experience place peak health and willingness to breed at pH 3.0–6.5, with values below 5.0 preferred for long-term maintenance and reproduction. Hardness should be extremely low (under 50 ppm; 18–72 ppm is sometimes cited as the tolerable range for captive specimens). Temperature of 72–82 °F suits most keepers; the lower end of that range is safer for long-term health than sustained warmth.
A small, heavily planted or hardscape-furnished tank of 10–15 US gal works well for a pair or small group. The species is peaceful and easily outcompeted for food by more assertive tankmates; it is best kept as a species-only setup or with other very small, unobtrusive blackwater fish such as tiny rasboras or pencilfish that share its chemistry requirements. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter or air-driven box filter is ideal — as the species does not tolerate strong current and requires unimpeded access to the surface for air-breathing. Cover the tank to prevent jumping and maintain surface humidity. Males may squabble mildly but are rarely dangerously aggressive toward one another in a sufficiently large and decorated tank.
Conservation
Parosphromenus deissneri is assessed as Endangered (EN, criterion B2ab(iii)) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed on 6 January 2020. The Endangered status reflects the species' extremely restricted range — confined to Bangka Island, where its area of occupancy is small and continuing to decline — and ongoing habitat degradation driven by palm-oil agriculture and tin mining, both of which have transformed and fragmented the peat-swamp ecosystems the species depends on. The criterion B2ab(iii) captures decline in area, extent, and quality of habitat rather than any direct evidence of population counts.
The Parosphromenus Project, an international conservation initiative dedicated to the genus, has identified P. deissneri as a priority species and coordinates ex-situ breeding programs at European zoological institutions including the Malmö Museum (Sweden), Aquazoo Düsseldorf (Germany), Tierpark Berlin (Germany), and CC-Nürnberg ZOO (Germany). The project is a member of ASAP (Amphibian Survival Alliance Partnership) and collaborates with the IUCN, and its members have documented field rediscoveries of the species on Bangka that informed the current understanding of its distribution. For aquarists, sourcing captive-bred stock exclusively — ideally from project-affiliated breeders — is the most direct contribution to reducing pressure on what remains a highly vulnerable wild population.
