Taxonomy & naming
Trichopodus leerii was first described by the Dutch physician-ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1852, making it one of the earlier members of the gourami lineage to receive a formal name. The parenthetical authority — (Bleeker, 1852) — indicates that the species was originally placed in a different genus and later transferred to Trichopodus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Trichopodus leerii (Bleeker, 1852).
For much of the twentieth century this fish was placed in the large, catch-all genus Trichogaster, and the name Trichogaster leerii still appears widely in older aquarium literature and some trade sources. Molecular and morphological work has since partitioned the former Trichogaster complex: Trichopodus now holds the larger species — leerii, trichopterus, microlepis — while the smaller, more slender fish (formerly Colisa) are placed in Trichogaster sensu stricto. Hobbyists and retailers should treat Trichogaster leerii as a synonym; the current valid name is Trichopodus leerii.
The specific epithet leerii honours the naturalist and physician H. S. Leer, a contemporary of Bleeker's in the Dutch East Indies. Common names reflect the species' distinctive patterning: pearl gourami is most widely used, with lace gourami and mosaic gourami as frequent alternatives.
Morphology
Trichopodus leerii is a moderately elongate, strongly laterally compressed gourami reaching about 4.5 in (approximately 4.7 in) total length under good conditions, though most aquarium specimens are somewhat smaller. The body profile is gently arched dorsally and rather straight ventrally, tapering to a pointed snout. Like all members of the family Osphronemidae, it possesses threadlike pelvic fins — the first ray of each pelvic is modified into a long, trailing filament that the fish extends and uses as a tactile sense organ.
The overall ground colour of the body ranges from warm tan to chocolate brown, overlaid with a close network of pearlescent white-to-gold dots and irregular pale lines that give the lace-work effect commemorated in its vernacular names. A dark longitudinal stripe runs from the snout through the eye and along the flank to the base of the caudal fin. Colour intensity is strongly context-dependent: a resting fish in a shaded, planted tank is muted and cryptic, while a displaying male flushes the throat, chest, and lower belly a vivid orange-red to brick-red — the transformation is one of the most striking colour changes seen in any gourami.
Sexual dimorphism is straightforward once fish are mature. Males develop the intense red flush on the throat and underside, their dorsal fin tapers to a longer, more pointed tip, and they are generally slightly larger than females of the same age. Females remain the pale lace pattern throughout, with a rounded dorsal and — when gravid — a noticeably distended abdomen.
Habitat
In the wild, the pearl gourami occupies lowland swamps, marshes, and slow or still backwaters across the Malay Peninsula, southern Thailand, the island of Sumatra, and Borneo. It shows a strong affinity for peat-swamp forest environments — the dark, acidic, tannin-stained blackwater systems that arise where accumulating organic peat leaches humic acids into the water. In these habitats the water is warm, oxygen-poor at depth, soft, and often highly acidic, conditions that favour air-breathing labyrinth fishes over species relying solely on dissolved oxygen.
The suprabranchial labyrinth organ — an accessory breathing structure developed independently in the order Anabantiformes — allows Trichopodus leerii to extract atmospheric oxygen directly from the surface and is an adaptation to exactly these low-oxygen environments. The fish typically inhabits dense stands of emergent and floating vegetation, submerged roots, and fallen timber that provide cover and feeding structure. Water temperatures in the natural range broadly span 75–86 °F (75–86 °F) and pH can run from around 5.5 (in genuine blackwater peat swamps) up to 8.0 in more open or seasonally flooded coastal areas.
The species is also encountered in coastal areas and river-margin habitats and tolerates a wider pH range than many peat-swamp specialists, which partly explains its durability in home aquaria under varied water chemistry. Its distribution overlaps extensively with other labyrinth fishes of Sundaland.
Feeding
Trichopodus leerii is an unfussy omnivore in both the wild and the aquarium. Its natural diet includes small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton — taken from the water column and vegetation, together with surface insects and algae grazed from submerged surfaces. The long, trailing pelvic filaments are used actively to probe vegetation and feel for prey, a habit conspicuous in a well-planted aquarium.
In captivity the pearl gourami accepts a wide variety of foods without difficulty: high-quality flake and small pellets form a suitable staple, while regular offerings of frozen or live foods — Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, Cyclops — improve colour and condition and bring fish into breeding readiness more readily. As with most labyrinth fishes, variety matters more than volume; small meals two or three times daily suit the species better than one large feeding. A degree of plant material — blanched spinach, spirulina, or similar — rounds out the diet and mirrors the vegetable fraction of the natural food intake.
Mating
The pearl gourami is a bubble-nesting labyrinth fish: the male constructs and defends a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles at the water surface — typically woven among or beneath floating plants — and courtship revolves around luring the female to that site. The male's courtship display is among the most dramatic in freshwater fishkeeping: he flushes a deep brick-red on the throat and chest, flares his fins, and patrols the nest site, circling and quivering near any female that approaches.
A receptive female is guided beneath the nest by the male, who wraps his body around hers in the characteristic anabantoid spawning embrace. The pair roll into an inverted posture for a few seconds while eggs and milt are released simultaneously, then separate — the male moving quickly to catch the semi-buoyant fertilised eggs in his mouth and blow them up into the bubble nest. The embrace is repeated many times in a single spawning session.
Males can be territorial and competitive with one another during the breeding period, and keeping multiple males in the same tank without adequate space and visual breaks can lead to persistent harassment. Against females, males are generally less aggressive than many gouramis, though persistent chasing of an unreceptive female does occur and should be managed with cover and tank design.
Breeding
Spawning Trichopodus leerii in captivity is straightforward and the species has been bred in home aquaria for generations. A dedicated breeding tank of around 15–20 US gal, filled to a relatively shallow level of 8–10 in, suits a pair well. Warmth (79–82 °F / 79–82 °F) and floating plants — Indian fern, frogbit, hornwort at the surface — give the male material to incorporate into the bubble nest and provide the shelter the female needs between spawning bouts. Very gentle filtration is important: the labyrinth organ requires still, moist air just above the surface, and strong surface agitation that disperses the nest or chills the air layer can cause problems for the developing fry.
The male typically begins building the bubble nest before spawning commences. A productive spawning delivers 200–300 or more eggs, which the male collects and blows into the nest. He guards the site aggressively while eggs develop; females are best removed after spawning to prevent harm. Eggs hatch in roughly 20–30 hours at breeding temperature, and the fry hang near the surface in the bubble raft for a further 3–5 days while the yolk sac is absorbed. The male should be removed once fry are free-swimming, as his parental instincts give way to predatory ones.
Free-swimming fry are tiny and require very fine first foods: infusoria, commercial liquid fry food, or green water for the first days, transitioning to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and microworm as they grow. Maintaining the surface air layer warm and still remains critical in the early weeks — young fry developing the labyrinth organ are particularly sensitive to temperature differences between water and air.
In the aquarium
Few fish are as consistently recommended for the peaceful community aquarium as the pearl gourami. It is hardy, adaptable, visually spectacular when in condition, and genuinely peaceful toward tank mates that are not small enough to be viewed as food. A group of three to six individuals, with at least one male to display, shows the species at its best; the contrast between a flushed-up male and the lace-patterned female is one of the aquarium hobby's great spectacles.
The preferred set-up is a well-planted tank of 20 US gal or more — larger for a proper group — with subdued lighting, floating plants that break the surface, and plenty of stem plants or leaf litter to provide visual shelter. Water chemistry is broadly tolerant: the species does well in soft, acidic to neutral water as well as moderately hard, near-neutral conditions (pH 5.5–8.0; temperature 75–82 °F / 75–82 °F). Critically, the aquarium must be covered — the suprabranchial labyrinth must have access to warm, humid air at the surface, and a gap of just a few centimetres between the water surface and a glass cover suffices. Gaps that allow cold draughts can damage the labyrinth and stress the fish.
Suitable tank mates are peaceful community species of similar or smaller size: small tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, loaches, and smaller livebearers all coexist without difficulty. Fin-nipping species should be avoided, as the long trailing pelvic filaments are an easy target. Males may squabble among themselves, particularly in tight quarters; adding more space or visual barriers usually resolves persistent aggression. With good care the pearl gourami is a long-lived aquarium fish, with lifespans of 8 years or more reported from well-maintained specimens.
Conservation
Trichopodus leerii is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a declining population trend driven primarily by the destruction and degradation of its peat-swamp forest habitat. Peatland conversion for oil palm and acacia plantations across Sumatra and Borneo has eliminated vast areas of the lowland swamp forest that the species depends on, and similar pressures affect its range on the Malay Peninsula and in Thailand. Wetland drainage, agricultural run-off, and forest clearance have all reduced both the area and quality of available habitat.
Collection for the ornamental-fish trade adds further pressure, though the pearl gourami has been bred in captivity at scale for many decades and much of the aquarium-trade supply is captive-produced rather than wild-caught. This buffer is meaningful but does not offset habitat loss: captive populations substitute for the trade but not for the wild gene pool or ecosystem function. The IUCN assessment notes the need for improved habitat management across the species' range and better monitoring of the impact of ornamental harvesting on wild populations.
For hobbyists, sourcing tank-bred specimens from reputable suppliers remains the most direct conservation contribution, reducing pressure on wild fish while keeping this highly desirable species accessible to the hobby.
