Taxonomy & naming
Trichopodus pectoralis was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1910. For most of the twentieth century the species was placed in the genus Trichogaster, and the name Trichogaster pectoralis persists widely in older literature and trade catalogues. Molecular and morphological revisions of the anabantoid gouramis have since restored the separation between Trichopodus (the larger, more laterally compressed species, including the moonlight, three-spot, and snakeskin gouramis) and the smaller Trichogaster (the dwarf and honey gouramis), so the current valid name is Trichopodus pectoralis Regan, 1910, as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
The specific epithet pectoralis refers to the pectoral fin region and was applied to mark a distinctive feature of the type specimens, though it is the flanks rather than the fin that most observers notice: the snakeskin pattern that gives rise to the species' best-known common name. In Thailand the fish is called pla salid (or pla saleed), in Malay-speaking regions sepat siam ('Siamese sepat'), in Vietnamese cá sặc rằn, and in Burmese trey kawnthor.
Morphology
Trichopodus pectoralis is a large, laterally compressed gourami, reaching up to 10 in total length on FishBase records and reported to 12 in in the wild by some sources, though aquarium specimens are generally smaller. The body is deep and oval in side view, with a small upturned mouth suited to surface feeding. Like other members of the family Osphronemidae, it possesses a suprabranchial labyrinth organ that supplements gill respiration with aerial air-breathing — an adaptation critical to life in warm, oxygen-depleted swamp water.
The flanks are covered in an intricate pattern of wavy, oblique dark and pale lines that run lengthwise and diagonally, creating the snakeskin or reticulate appearance from which the fish takes its English name. The ground colour is a warm silver-green to olive-grey. A vague dark blotch is sometimes present at mid-body and at the caudal peduncle. The ventral fins are filamentous and elongated in the manner typical of Trichopodus, and their tips may be pale yellow to orange. Mature males are slimmer than females and develop a pointed dorsal fin; females are deeper-bodied and rounder-bellied, especially when gravid.
Habitat
In its native range — the Mekong basin of Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, plus the Chao Phraya drainage of central Thailand — the snakeskin gourami inhabits shallow, sluggish or standing water with dense aquatic vegetation. Flooded forests, rice paddies, marshes, swamps, and slow-flowing river margins with heavy macrophyte growth are all typical habitats, particularly during the wet season when floodplain waters spread across low-lying ground.
Recorded water parameters span a broad range, reflecting the species' tolerance: temperatures of 72–86 °F (FishBase gives 73–82 °F as a core band), pH 5.8–8.5, and hardness from very soft to moderately hard (2–30 dH). This wide envelope is consistent with a species that has colonised introduced habitats ranging from highland reservoirs to lowland irrigation canals. The labyrinth organ is essential here: in still, warm, vegetation-dense water dissolved oxygen can fall very low, and the fish routinely rises to gulp air at the surface.
Feral populations are established in Malaysia (peninsular and Borneo), the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, and Colombia, and the species has been recorded in New Caledonia as well. Genetic work on these introduced populations shows high haplotype diversity in peninsular Malaysia (reflecting multiple source introductions) and lower diversity in Malaysian Borneo (a single-source founding event), mirroring patterns typical of sequential aquaculture escapes or deliberate stocking.
Feeding
The snakeskin gourami is a flexible omnivore that tilts toward plant matter in the wild. FishBase characterises its diet as primarily aquatic plants, and this is consistent with the species' role as a low-trophic grazer in shallow vegetated habitats. However, Seriously Fish and field observations confirm that it also takes terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, snails, slugs, small spiders — making it a broadly opportunistic feeder rather than a strict herbivore.
In aquaculture, the species is raised on rice bran, agricultural by-products, and formulated pellets, and its willingness to accept cheap plant-based feeds is part of what makes it economically important. In an aquarium it accepts most standard prepared foods: flake, pellets, wafers, and frozen or live invertebrate foods. Blanched vegetables, spirulina-based foods, and algae wafers are welcomed and complement the diet. The species is not a fussy eater and will graze continuously on soft-leaved aquatic plants in a planted tank if not fed sufficiently.
Mating
Trichopodus pectoralis is a bubble-nest builder. The male constructs a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles at the water surface, typically among floating vegetation or in the shelter of emergent plant leaves, and defends both the nest site and surrounding territory vigorously. Courtship involves the male circling the female with fins spread, displaying the snakeskin pattern and guiding her toward the nest.
Spawning occurs in a body-wrapping embrace directly beneath the bubble nest, a behaviour shared across Trichopodus and the broader anabantoid family. The male curves around the female, fertilising the eggs as she releases them; both fish then disengage and the male collects the sinking eggs in his mouth and spits them up into the nest. The same sequence may be repeated many times in a single session. Males are territorial and may be aggressive toward females outside spawning; providing dense vegetation or visual breaks limits conflict.
Breeding
Under suitable conditions, breeding the snakeskin gourami in captivity is straightforward, and the species is considered one of the easier large gouramis to spawn. The male builds a large surface bubble nest — Seriously Fish notes it can reach up to 10 in in diameter — incorporating pieces of floating plant if available. Water level should be kept shallow (8–10 in) during breeding to prevent the newly hatched fry from becoming exhausted reaching the surface; warm still water is essential, as cold draughts can damage the delicate labyrinth organs of developing fry.
A productive spawning can yield up to 5,000 eggs, which the male collects and guards within the nest. The eggs are buoyant and hatch in 20–30 hours at typical tropical temperatures. Fry become free-swimming after a further 4–5 days and at that point the male should be removed to prevent predation. Initial food for the fry should be very small: infusoria, commercial liquid fry food, or green water, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. The female is generally best separated from the male after spawning. The species has been raised commercially for food in SE Asia for decades, confirming its relative ease in captivity.
In the aquarium
The snakeskin gourami is a large fish and requires a proportionally large aquarium — a minimum of 59 in is realistic for one or a pair of adults, with greater volume appreciated for a group or for fish that will be kept long-term. It is peaceful toward dissimilar species but males can be aggressive to one another and, outside spawning, may harass females; keeping a single male with one or more females in a densely planted tank usually reduces conflict. Given its eventual size and the fact that it is often sold as a juvenile a quarter of its adult length, the fish is easily underestimated at purchase.
Water quality should be good and stable, though the species tolerates a wide parameter range and adapts readily to temperate home aquaria between roughly 75–82 °F with neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Gentle filtration is preferable to strong currents — the species is a fish of still, vegetated backwaters, not flowing rivers — and surface agitation should be moderate. Critically, the surface must remain accessible at all times: as an obligate air-breather, a tightly sealed lid with no gap will stress or kill the fish. Planted tanks suit it well, though it may graze on soft-leaved plants; robust species such as Vallisneria, Anubias, and Java fern hold up better. In food-fish aquaculture across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam it is valued for rapid growth, mild-flavoured flesh, and easy culture — aspects of its biology that translate to relative ease in the home aquarium as well.
Conservation
Trichopodus pectoralis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded in February 2012. The species' broad distribution across the Mekong and Chao Phraya systems, combined with its tolerance for degraded habitat and its wide establishment through introduction, supports that overall rating.
Nevertheless, localised declines have been documented. A genetic diversity study of populations across the native and introduced range found that wild populations in Thailand — one of the core native areas — have contracted due to habitat loss, likely tied to drainage of wetlands, conversion of floodplain forest to agriculture, and water quality changes in the Mekong basin. The combination of low genetic diversity in some introduced populations and ongoing pressure on native habitat illustrates that a globally common fish can face real regional threats. Responsible aquaculture that supplies the food and ornamental trade from captive stock, rather than wild capture, reduces pressure on those native populations.
