Taxonomy & naming
Aphanius arakensis was formally described by Teimori, Esmaeili, Gholami, Zarei and Reichenbacher in 2012 in the open-access journal ZooKeys (doi:10.3897/zookeys.215.1731), based on specimens collected from shallow spring-fed pools in the Namak Lake basin, Qom Province, northern Iran (type locality approximately 34°00'N, 49°50'E). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Aphanius arakensis Teimori, Esmaeili, Gholami, Zarei & Reichenbacher, 2012. The species epithet references Arak, the nearest city to the type locality.
Phylogenetic analysis of cytochrome b sequence data, conducted as part of the original description, established A. arakensis as sister to A. sophiae (Heckel, 1847) — another Iranian toothcarp — with A. farsicus as the outgroup to that pair. Despite the close relationship, A. arakensis is diagnosable on a suite of meristic and morphological characters: 10–12 anal-fin rays, 28–32 lateral-line scales, 10–13 caudal-peduncle scales, 8–10 gill rakers, and the male barring pattern. GBIF currently lists the species as a synonym of Esmaeilius sophiae under the Catalogue of Life treatment, but this reflects a nomenclatural split that predates the ZooKeys paper; the original description explicitly argues for the species' independence and the Catalog of Fishes maintains its validity.
The genus Aphanius belongs to the family Aphaniidae (the eastern Mediterranean and Asian toothcarps), a group of hard-water pupfish-relatives distributed from the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands east across North Africa, the Middle East, and the Iranian plateau to Pakistan. Aphanius species are the Old-World ecological counterparts of the North American pupfishes (Cyprinodon) — small, salinity-tolerant inhabitants of springs, salt lakes, and coastal lagoons in arid and semi-arid zones.
Morphology
Aphanius arakensis is a small fish, reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 1–1.5 in (ZooKeys original description; Seriously Fish). FishBase records a maximum total length of 2.5 in for the broader A. sophiae complex, which is consistent with the upper range for large females of this species. The body is stocky and somewhat compressed laterally, with a blunt snout and an upturned mouth adapted to surface feeding.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Males display 12–19 (most commonly 15–16) narrow dark transverse bars on the flanks against a pale, yellowish or silvery background — a barring pattern that intensifies during courtship and fades under stress. Females and juveniles are cryptically coloured with irregular dark blotches or a mottled pattern on the flanks rather than distinct bars, providing camouflage against the muddy substrate of their spring pools. The dorsal fin carries 12–15 soft rays; the anal fin 10–17 rays (FishBase), though the original description gives 10–12 anal rays as a diagnostic character. Fin colouration is subdued in both sexes.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Namak Lake basin (Daryacheh-ye Namak), an endorheic — internally draining — salt lake system in Qom Province, north-central Iran. The type locality described in the original ZooKeys paper is a small, shallow spring-fed pond measuring roughly 20 ft × 13 ft, with a mud and gravel substrate and water that is nearly stagnant. Field measurements at the time of collection recorded a water temperature of 73 °F. Seriously Fish documents the water chemistry more fully from aquarium-acclimatised stock: pH 7.0–8.5, hardness 179–536 ppm, and a marine salt addition of 1–3 g/L reflecting the naturally brackish to slightly saline character of the spring water.
The wider tolerance range recorded in captivity — temperature 46–90 °F — indicates the species must cope with pronounced seasonal extremes in its arid highland basin, where winters are cold and summers scorching. The Namak basin lies at roughly 2953 ft elevation; spring water moderates temperature extremes at the source, but shallow pools are subject to rapid warming in summer and cooling in autumn. This physiological resilience to temperature, salinity, and near-stagnant, oxygen-limited conditions characterises the genus Aphanius as a whole and reflects life in environments that exclude most competing fishes.
Feeding
FishBase classifies A. arakensis as mainly herbivorous (citing reference 13530 for the A. sophiae complex), but the Seriously Fish profile, drawing on field and aquarium observation, characterises the species more precisely as a micropredator taking small crustaceans, worms, and insect larvae. This apparent contradiction is common in Aphanius accounts: the upturned mouth and the ability to pick food from the surface film and water column make these fish effective consumers of algal films, detritus, and microinvertebrates alike. In the impoverished fauna of a small Iranian spring pool, the fish likely feeds on whatever organic material is available — biofilm, chironomid larvae, ostracods, and windblown insects.
In captivity, A. arakensis is reported to take small live and frozen invertebrates (artemia nauplii, daphnia, cyclops, chironomid larvae) as well as high-quality dry foods of appropriate size. A varied diet that includes both plant-based and protein-rich components reflects the species' opportunistic natural feeding and helps maintain colour and condition in male fish.
Mating
Aphanius arakensis is a non-annual, fractional spawner. It does not bury eggs in substrate for diapause — its spring-fed habitat is permanent water and does not dry seasonally — and instead deposits adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation, algal mats, and spawning mops over an extended breeding season. Seriously Fish records the breeding season as April through November, with peak activity in April and August, indicating a prolonged fractional spawning pattern typical of small toothcarps in permanent, stable-temperature spring habitats.
Males court females with lateral displays emphasising the barred flank pattern; courtship intensity increases as spawning approaches. The pair position side by side or with the male slightly beneath the female before a brief spawning embrace in which a small number of eggs are fertilised at each contact. Eggs are attached via fine adhesive filaments to the spawning substrate — algal threads, fine-leaved plants, or synthetic mop fibres in captivity. Because only a few eggs are deposited per contact over many sessions, the term 'fractional spawner' captures the strategy well: reproductive effort is spread continuously across many months rather than concentrated in a single mass-spawning event.
Breeding
Fertilised eggs incubate in the water column or among vegetation at the spawning site, hatching after approximately 7–14 days at the temperatures found in the natural spring habitat (Seriously Fish). There is no diapause, no drying phase, and no requirement for peat or moist storage — eggs develop continuously once laid. Fry are very small on hatching and require appropriately fine first foods: infusoria, freshly hatched artemia nauplii, or commercial micro-fry powders.
Maturity comes early relative to the fish's short lifespan: Seriously Fish notes that A. arakensis exhibits high reproductive effort, early sexual maturity, and a maximum lifespan of under three years — life-history traits consistent with an opportunistic, r-selected strategy in an unstable or resource-limited environment. In the aquarium, breeding is encouraged by providing dense planting or fine-fibre spawning mops, slightly saline water (1–3 g/L marine salt), stable temperatures in the 68–79 °F range, and regular small meals of live invertebrates to condition the fish. Eggs and fry should be removed from the adult tank or the adults separated, as parents will consume both. The extended spawning window means that attentive hobbyists can raise multiple clutches across a single season.
In the aquarium
Aphanius arakensis is not available in the mainstream ornamental fish trade; as of early 2023 captive stock existed only within specialist conservation networks in the EU and among aquarists affiliated with Czech and Slovak breeding societies (CARES Fish Preservation Program). Obtaining the species requires contact with these specialist circles, and maintaining it is considered a conservation responsibility as much as a hobby endeavour.
The fish is tolerant of a wide temperature range (46–90 °F), making it suitable for unheated aquaria in temperate climates — indeed, a modest winter cool-down may benefit long-term health and breeding condition. Water should be hard and alkaline (pH 7.0–8.5), with a small addition of marine salt (1–3 g/L) to replicate the slightly brackish spring chemistry. Soft or acidic water is not appropriate. An aquarium of modest size — 10–15 US gal — is sufficient for a small group; substrate of fine gravel or sand, some algal growth or fine-leaved plants for spawning, and open swimming space at the surface are the key requirements. Filtration should be gentle, as the species inhabits nearly stagnant water in nature. Males can be aggressive toward each other, so a single male kept with two or more females is the recommended ratio. Seriously Fish notes the species is difficult to maintain long-term in the aquarium — stable, appropriate chemistry and close attention to water quality are essential.
Conservation
Aphanius arakensis has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List, yet its conservation situation is considered precarious by the specialists who work with it. The species is known from an extremely restricted range — a small cluster of spring-fed pools in a single endorheic basin in the Iranian highlands — and its entire wild population may number in the hundreds or low thousands of individuals at most. Like many Aphanius species, it faces threats from groundwater extraction (reducing or eliminating spring flow), agricultural run-off and water diversion, and the introduction of exotic species, particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis and G. holbrooki), which are widespread in Iranian freshwaters and have devastated endemic toothcarp populations across the region through competition and predation.
The CARES Fish Preservation Program includes A. arakensis on its Aphaniidae priority list, and European specialist societies maintain the only confirmed captive populations. These ex-situ stocks are the species' documented insurance against extinction. No formal field survey data on wild population trends are available in the published literature as of 2026, which means that the conservation status of A. arakensis remains unquantified even as the pressures on its single spring-basin locality continue. The species exemplifies the situation of many Iranian endemic toothcarps: evolutionarily distinct, habitat-specialised, and hanging on in a single locality that receives no legal protection specifically for its endemic aquatic fauna.
